Yep. This critic lost all credibility in my eyes after I read that line.

Wow! I guess the Rolling Stone article works, they have like dozens and dozens of replys:

Yahoo it's always taken advantage of the fan wars.

What makes you say he has a problem? Despite an overemphasis on the musicianship at the expense of much focus on the songs themselves (though I think you could argue Prince has been doing the same thing when he records these days), I think it's a fairly well-reasoned review.

I think dude is quite on point with most of his comments. This trio of CDs was bored inducing.

I've never bought this argument, no offense.

I just figure, if you were going to make music just for yourself, wouldn't you make the most mind-blowing music possible? Wouldn't you just turn on the recorder and go wild? Make music so sweet even YOU can't believe you did that shit? lol

Wouldn't you just put all your sweat and energy into it and make a fabulous, freaky little treat just for yourself?

He probably does that all the time, then he records some songs to pay the bills.
I'm firmly planted in denial

I cannot honestly point out one song on either of the latest albums that sound lazy or "goopy-sounding".

I don't know which ones the writer meant but if I had to venture a guess...

Elixer- ALL of it!

LotusFlow3r - From the Lotus, The Morning After, Love Like Jazz, Back to the Lotus

MPLS - Here, Valentina, Better With Time

Howdy Hatrina...
Yeah, this def. points out the fact that there are different strokes for different folks. Better with Time and HERE are two of my FAV. tracks! Better with time is Off the chain!
Now, Valentina does not do a lot for me, honestly....however I still do not think it sounds lazy.
From the Lotus and Back to the Lotus...Love them!
As far as Bria's tracks. I enjoy them! I think she has a nice voice and the music is very jazz lounge, which I adore.

Remember, Prince played Purple Rain at the Super Bowl not too long ago. If he doesn't want to be remembered by it, he shouldn't use the song as a crutch wink

I never bought that argument it because it just seems kind of backwards to me. If he's just making his music for himself now...why is he selling it to the public? It could be argued that he's keeping the good mind-blowing stuff to himself...in the vault and just putting out whatever to turn a buck. Ok, still backwards in my eyes! The reason being...good mind-blowing stuff would sell much more and for much longer than the

lazy, goopy-sounding, '"quiet storm-like" tunes that even Donny Hathaway couldn't have re-arranged into anything worth listening to.

that he's been peddling every other year or so since 2000 really. I'm just saying. shrug

He doesnt use it as a crutch. Playing Purple Rain when he already did two out of the ordinary rock cover version mash-ups isn't relying on his past laurels. Especially when he is playing probably to his largest televised audience. And FOOTBALL fans ta' boot.

Thats like Rolling Stones, U2, Petty, Springsteen (you see where Im going here?) oing out and playing only their latest cd.

i loathe planet earth, but it did serve the purpose of lowering my expectations with regard to what his next album would be like. at least i thought lotusflow3r was BETTER, though i think it's a little late in the day for someone to write a blog crying about how P has "lost his edge". yeah, we waved off that boat a long time ago. we're just sopping up the gravy these days.

It may be a little late in the day but I actually think it's about damn time. When it's just the fans around here saying it, we get little "better mind your manners" ditties like F.U.N.K. and No More Candy 4 U but when it's out there and being discussed amongst the masses, just blowing it off doesn't work anymore.

lol I didn't want to admit it but PE really did lower my expectations too. The two preceeding albums did too, to some extent, though not nearly as much.

Lotus is less a masterpiece than a relief.

yeah, i see what you mean, but i guess my thing is, it's hardly news. i just figured it was something that people just come to accept from pop icons when they get long in the tooth. the music loses its edge and the only people who really embrace it are the diehard fans. everyone else just flocks to the concerts and is satisfied to hear the big hits performed, then they talk through the new stuff when it's being performed. lol

Sounds like ENVY spewing from the pen of a failed musician...
I did some research and Mr Yamodas latest artistic contribution consists of making a Jimi Hendrix mixtape for an all-asian rewrite of a more famous play...they stage this in the attic of a church. Prior works include making mixtapes for other third rate plays.

From centerstagechicago.com...
City Lit is located on the second floor of a church, down the hall from the main stairwell. It's a good sized space designed as a thrust, and is intimate enough that there aren't really any bad seats. When walking there from the Bryn Mawr Red Line stop, there's (naturally) a Starbucks on the way and a great restaurant, Mia Francesca's, is right across the street.

Mr Yamoda...you are not worthy of judging O)+>
