negative? I never listened to that album and thought he was being negative. hmmm I can barely I understand what he's saying in the slowed down voice but I always loved when he used that voice in a lot of his past songs. Like Scarlet Pussy, Bob George, and as Tora Tora. i like it when others use it too like Dr. Dre. Its creepy.

hell, i actually like the darth vader voice on 'trc.' just not what it's saying. biggrin

as much as i love 'trc,' it actually put me off of prince for a few years. i listened to it a lot but it caused me to see everything he's done since then through the filter of what we now know he believes. i think 'elixir' is fantastic musically (though it is ultimately an extension of the 'trc' message, through female eyes), and it's honestly the first thing since 'trc' that i haven't got bored with fairly quickly.

he's just not about what he used to be about. i don't hate him for it, but at the same time i can't pretend it appeals to me.

This colored the way I have viewed everything since nod I was at the Musicology press conference here in LA and he talked more about the industry and real musicianship and then blasted our asses with an hour and a half concert including The One into the Question of U back into The One faint

Then I saw Musicology and was just on fire in anticipation especially with the lauding of real musicianship and how bad ass the consert was. Then the CD dropped and it was atrocious. Musicianship nowhere near what he had just released, plastic crap and totally beneath James Brown ripoff.

One thing about that concert though, really had me totally mesmerized and feeling like he had finally moved away from battling the fans and that was when he did the accoustic set, namely the song 7. He strummed that and the whole arena was singing along and at one point he put his hands to his face, like someone does when they are about to cry and you could see that he was moved. It was absolutely beautiful to see such a rare expression. I can't ever remember anywhere ever seeing him like that. It was humbling as a fan to see how humbled he was that we were all there connecting to his art. Just a magical moment I will never forget.

3121 comes out and Planet Earth and it still feels like he's moved away from the madness and towards something geniune and this culminates on 7/7/7 where fans from everywhere descended on Minneapolis and experienced two shows and an aftershow at the legendary First Ave. I was there for all of it and it was all amazing.

Then this websherriff shit. All good will built up with lots of folks, gone and for what? This plastic ass Lotus, a mediocre protege, a website that isn't thrilling the fams and old old ideas that should have been settled and left in the dust by current trailblazing.....

P feeds off energy.... Either its direct from source via prayer and meditation, or stolen from people.. positive [via love ] or negative [via anger].. its all energy.

It take less effort to generate negative energy....and I cant help but feel he has subconsiously substituted his fans/ industry critique into his father's critical voice just to have something to rail against.

He needs/feeds [on the energy of adoration from fans] but then feels guilty about it.

Do you think he regrets being a JW?

I have nowt against his choice of the JW denomination, [it's not what I would have chosen] but, we all have our own journey and he'll take it as far as he needs it to go..... I dont think the path to enlightenment and self acceptance is meant to be an easy one cool

Prince is like anyone else, and i really think that people read 2 much into what he does and says. People on here have called him a walking "contradiction" well guess what, we all are contradictions in our daily lives, look at anything we do and we are contradictions, flawed. But somehow we have put Prince on this pedastol of no return. Prince has so much out there and hidden in the vault and leaked etc...that we all have our opinions on what is good not good, funky not funky, real and not real, we all have our opinions on his religious views, his talk, his walk, etc...His battle with his fans as put is really the fans battle with staying a fan face it. We are all in some way reaching for something that we aint gonna get, that feeling we got when we dropped on the Purple Rain vinyl or 1999 etc... it just aint gonna happen like that and we aint gonna feel the way we used too, U cannot re-create a feeling, and we all do this, with all of our favorite artists, and when let down by the NON-recreation we get, we tend to blame.

I get emotional, philisophical and intellectual fulfillment from many artists. I don't miss this from Prince. handing over the "fan" card isn't a problem. Stop trying to make it sound like the "war" is manufactured and imagined by us.

I hate it from front to back. Absolutely loathe it. I'd rather listen to Graffiti Bridge backwards, than TRC at all.

LOL, eye agree. falloff IMO, Prince should've released the High project instead of Rainbow Children! But 4 some reason, he stuck 2 the concept of releasing a Jehovah's Witness jazz album. It's just awful, some of Prince's worst material! boxed

I heart the cover artwork, tho. cool

I'm VERY into concept albums and even though I do not get into the lyrics it's like being a zoo keeper who has to feed baby rabbits to the snake or an observer as lions attack a gazelle. Uncomfortable but necessary lol

I wish this album were the ONLY foray into the direct expression of his current faith. It says everything that needs to be said. The rest of the JW stuff before and after is just bloat.

Concept = 10 star
Music = 10 star
Lyrics = 4 star if that

It has most of what I love about Prince, there is total vision here and total hunger. It shows.

(First sorry for my english!)

THE PREACHER

In the time when I made listen to Lovesexy around me I still remember persons who weren't into the mystic of the album and preferred for most part a title like "Alphabet Street".

I would'nt say that there's no difference between the 2 albums... but what I notice it is that they are 2 only "real" concept albums of its work and I do not think whether it is a fate if Prince finds us with Rainbow Children where he left us with Lovesexy.

Lovesexy "The Genesis" speaks about its meeting and its progress:

"Save me Jesus, I've been a fool
How could I forget that U are the rule
U are my God, I am Your child
From now on, 4 U I shall be wild
I shall be quick I shall be strong
I'll tell Your story, no matter how long (no matter how... no matter)..." - Anna Steisia

Rainbow Children "The Revelation" is the fulfillment of this progress:

"When I was lost and couldn't c my way
I used 2 follow what everybody say
Now I know that it's written in the heart
Now I'm ready, ready 2 start

Without God it wasn't there
Now I feel it Everywhere" - Everywhere

Where is the contradiction ?

IMO there's nothing new... the fact is that "Prince is a Preacher":

"Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven
Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass against us
Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil
For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever" - Controversy

"Dearly beloved
We are gathered here today
2 get through this thing called life

Electric word life
It means forever and that's a mighty long time
But I'm here 2 tell u
There's something else
The afterworld" - Let's Go Crazy

"We all have our problems
Some are BIG, some are small
Soon all of our problems, y'all
Will be taken by the cross" - The Cross

"I've seen the future and it will be
I've seen the future and it works
And if there's life after, we will see
So I can't go like a jerk" - The Futur

"Love the one who is love, the one who gives us the power
The one who made everything, elephants and flowers
The one who will listen when all others will not
There will be peace 4 those who love god a lot" - Elephants & Flowers

"Thunder all thru the night
Promise to see Jesus in the morning light
Take my hand, it'll be alright
C'mon save your soul tonight" - Thunder

"Lord I might get tired,
But I, I've got 2 keep on (we sacrifice)
Walkin' down this road, (we sacrifice)
Keep on walkin' down this road (joy around the corner)
When I reach my destination (we sacrifice)
My name will be Victor

Amen" - The Sacrifice Of Victor

"Who gave U life when there was none at all?
Who gave the sun permission 2 rise up everyday? (Ooh, oh yes)
Let me tell it (Go'n)
If U ask God 2 love U longer
Every breath U take will make U stronger
Keepin' U happy (happy) and proud 2 call His name (Go'n and say it)
Jesus (Jesus)" - The Holy River

"Push it up, push it up 2 the sky
U don't have 2 have a plane 2 fly
If U listen 2 the truth and not the lie
Stop cryin', cryin'

In harmony, can't U see
Every color all in the same key
And that's the way Jah wants us 2 be
Start tryin', a-tryin' " - Push It Up

"Do U love your brother? (Everyday, everyday)
Do U love your sister? (Everyday, everyday)
Do U love us? (Everyday, everyday)
Do U love God? (Everyday, everyday)" - Everyday Is A Winding Road

Rainbow Children is awesome and refreshing

so what the deep voice is irritating,
and people need to get over his JW association, he doesn't live 4 U, he may continue in it, he may leave later

But those who get upse over the 'religious' references that aren't all that preachy are bigots. Sorry, but Prince as always talked about stuff like this, he is just more defined with the JW and the few songs on the album that really expessed it aren't all that obvious

Rainbow Children as a song is sexy (forget that voice which is only at the beginning and a touch at the end) it's a hot song
Digital Garden as an instrumental
Everywhere musically is wonderful
The Sensual Everafter
Mellow
1+1+1 = 3
the Everlasting Now
She Loves Me 4 Me
Last December

What is so unlistenable about these songs... NOTHING
[Edited 5/1/09 8:45am]

you have to admit there is a fair amount of hate in this record that was not entirely evident in previous records. prince was always angry but it was usually over something personal. in this record he finds a reason to extend the hate towards entire races of people and even entire genders.

I can's say I can admit it, because I haven't gone deep into the lyrics, I wasn't trying to figure out for the most part what he is sayin, I'm hearing the music/instruments and how the words are sung, not really what they are.

I've found that many people go thru a period where it seems like they are angry at things and people when they finally start looking at how things are or were racially, gender, or other ways.

I have an uncle who we called uncle Tom(raise in S. Carolina) moved to N Y state in the mid 70's one of 1st African American families to integrate an all white/wasp suburb. 1st AA firechief of the Highland area firehouse. He is very 'white' in his ways and beliefs. When his kids moved out and away, he started reading things he never read before such as slavery, jim crow and current racial inequalities, how the medie portrays AA's etc etc and you would think the uncle turned Nation of Islam, you'd swear he hated white people. But it was just an emotionally angry response to certain societal historical truths.

I think that might be what Prince went thru during this period.

But can you point out lyrics that express this hatred?

Again I don't believe most of the songs on this album have that

I've over discussing it; for now anyway. I unloaded earlier and, I think, touched on some good points about it, and why it's a bad album to/for me.

Anything else is just beatdeadhorse at this point. I'm sure in another 2 months, there will be a whole new gaggle of comments on TRC.

Most of those pre-1999/2000 albums talked ABOUT God or his beliefs, they didn't ram it down your throat and didn't preach. Some where pleas to God, some were just stating what he believed. (And that "Winding Road" example is horrible because it's so GRAHAM at that point, it was the beginning of the end with JW nonsense.) TRC is far and above more provocative and preachy than all of those previous songs put together.

For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever" - Controversy

"Dearly beloved
We are gathered here today
2 get through this thing called life

Electric word life
It means forever and that's a mighty long time
But I'm here 2 tell u
There's something else
The afterworld" - Let's Go Crazy

"We all have our problems
Some are BIG, some are small
Soon all of our problems, y'all
Will be taken by the cross" - The Cross

"I've seen the future and it will be
I've seen the future and it works
And if there's life after, we will see
So I can't go like a jerk" - The Futur

"Love the one who is love, the one who gives us the power
The one who made everything, elephants and flowers
The one who will listen when all others will not
There will be peace 4 those who love god a lot" - Elephants & Flowers

"Thunder all thru the night
Promise to see Jesus in the morning light
Take my hand, it'll be alright
C'mon save your soul tonight" - Thunder

"Lord I might get tired,
But I, I've got 2 keep on (we sacrifice)
Walkin' down this road, (we sacrifice)
Keep on walkin' down this road (joy around the corner)
When I reach my destination (we sacrifice)
My name will be Victor

Amen" - The Sacrifice Of Victor

"Who gave U life when there was none at all?
Who gave the sun permission 2 rise up everyday? (Ooh, oh yes)
Let me tell it (Go'n)
If U ask God 2 love U longer
Every breath U take will make U stronger
Keepin' U happy (happy) and proud 2 call His name (Go'n and say it)
Jesus (Jesus)" - The Holy River

"Push it up, push it up 2 the sky
U don't have 2 have a plane 2 fly
If U listen 2 the truth and not the lie
Stop cryin', cryin'

In harmony, can't U see
Every color all in the same key
And that's the way Jah wants us 2 be
Start tryin', a-tryin' " - Push It Up

"Do U love your brother? (Everyday, everyday)
Do U love your sister? (Everyday, everyday)
Do U love us? (Everyday, everyday)
Do U love God? (Everyday, everyday)" - Everyday Is A Winding Road

Try it... these could be a nice "Sermon" in a church beg

I don't see anything wrong with those lyrics

What's the harm in listenin' 2 the hopeful words we say?
If it moves your heart then U better get in without delay

I know there is a heaven, I know there is a hell
Listen 2 me people, I got a story 2 tell
I know there was confusion, lightnin' all around me
That's when I called His name
Don't U know He found me?

No! - is what Spooky Electric say, it's not OK (No!)
But I know that Love is the only way till my dyin' day (No!)
Till my dyin' day I'll be OK
Cuz Lovesexy is the one till my day is done
Hundalasiliah! (Yeah oh!)

I know there is a devil because he talks so loud
He makes U do things your friends do (Do what your friends do)
Hang out with the crowd
But my Lord, He's so quiet when He calls your name
When U hear it your heart will thunder
U will wanna hear it every day - Eye No Lovesexy

Maybe, maybe, maybe I could learn 2 love
I mean the right way, I mean the only way
Perhaps U could show me, baby

Anna Stesia come 2 me, talk 2 me, ravish me
Liberate my mind

Maybe, maybe, maybe I could learn 2 love
Ah, if I was just closer 2 somethin' (Closer)
Closer 2 your higher self? I don't know
Closer 2 heaven? Maybe
Closer 2 God {x3}

Save me Jesus, I've been a fool
How could I forget that U are the rule
U are my God, I am Your child
From now on, 4 U I shall be wild
I shall be quick, I shall be strong
I'll tell Your story no matter how long
No matter how... (No matter {x4})

We're just a play in Your master plan
Now, my Lord, I understand
(I understand)

Love is God, God is love
Girls and boys love God above
- Anna Stesia Lovesexy

In a deep sleep I fell
And the music starts 2 swell
One of my ribs He took and it shall be
Bone of my bones (Bone of my bones)
And God created woman

And we were naked and did not care
There's a time 2 take and a time 2 share
2 in love all around and all aware
Flesh of my flesh (Flesh of my flesh)
And God created woman
-And God Created Woman 0-+>

From out of the darkness, before there was time
There came a sound that enters the mind
Through a door that's deep in your soul
Through every pore of your body it goes

And in a light 2 bright 2 behold
Is the truth more shiny than gold
And as sure as this candle burns
Every soul must return

Into the light, into the light
-In2 the Light Chaos & Disorder

If God had a name, what would it be
And would we call it 2 His face
If we were faced with Him and all His glory?
What would U ask if U had just one question?

Yeah, yeah, God is great
Yeah, yeah, God is good

Come on get lost in the mellow mellow {x2}

Can I sing 2 U while U bring yourself 2 joy?
I'll go slow at first, while U quench your thirst
Wet circles around the toy
While U bring yourself 2 joy
-Mellow Rainbow Children

All across the nation, people doin' what they can
2 avoid the tribulation that will be great throughout the land
(Everything) Everything in darkness must come out in2 the light
(That's right)
Until we love each other, it's the only way it's gonna be right (Hey

News is comin' like a hurricane
Comin' down hard on those who live in vain
Treatin' each other funky when U know we're all the same
God is alive, this is not a game

CHORUS
(He's alive)

News is comin' like a dog in heat
He's lookin' 4 soldiers with strong feet
That can dance on whoever can't say His name
God is alive, this is not a game (Listen)

CHORUS
(Listen)
(Yeah, I'm a witness)
(Do U believe?) (U know it)

All of His children come take a blissy ride
4 all who see Him, 4 all He lives inside
U can be so happy, purely satisfied
God is alive

Live, live!
- God Is Alive

*****

Dance the Dance Electric
Listen 2 the rhythm of your soul
U got 2 dance the Dance Electric
We better love each other, it's almost time 2 go

We... love... all... enemies

Look - U're livin' in Babylon
Makin', but not feelin' love at all
When your youth is gone, when it comes 2 dawn
A light of truth will shine and U will fall

That's why U got 2 dance the Dance Electric
Listen 2 the rhythm of your soul
U got 2 dance the Dance Electric
We better love each other, it's almost time 2 go

God

In the beginning, there was God
He made the earth and the heavens
He gave us light 2 rule the day
And another light 2 rule the night
The Lord, thy God
He made, He made the seas
He made the fruit upon the tree

When He saw
When He saw that it was good
He made a man
He made a man
Only He could, only He could

God made U
God made me 2
He made us all
He made us all equally

Now U say it

God made U, God made me
He made us all equally

Wake up children
Dance the Dance Electric
There isn't much time
Who screamed?
Was it U?

clapping and that's the bottom line right there ..because one's spirtial plane doesn't mesh with another's then the whole "preaching" aspect comes 2 it. i find it funny that some will say the "preaching" on lovesexy they don't mind but on TRC they do. contridictions r abundant.

and 4 the record..I LOVE THIS ALBUM from beginning 2 end

There is no preaching on Lovesexy.

so sure about that? wink

save me lord i've been a fool
how could i 4get that YOU r the rule
u r my God i am YOUR child
4 now on 4 You i shall b wild
i shall b strong i'll shall b quick
i'll tell ur story no matter how long ...

lovesexy the feeling u get when u fall in love
not with a girl or a boy but with the heavens above

this is his acclimation of faith and when he would do this song live on the lovesexy tour..he was preaching that God is the only way. now there r some that don't belive in God and felt that this was 2 strong of a message. so what's the difference in him stating 13 years later that his proclimation of faith is now beliving in the new world translation?
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Dragging the Holocaust into the crime against black slaves was unneccessary and the subjegation of women is in there. I'll let him address the rest lol

2 great horrors of human history one down 2 those of jewish faith and one due 2 skin tone..so it's listing 2 injustices of mankind

but it's not necessarily a contradiction. the message of 'trc' is significantly different than that of 'lovesexy.'

love of god vs the love of jehovah?

all people are equal vs the theocratic order.

all people are equal vs all the important people in the bible were black and white people have been pulling them down since the hyksos displaced the old dynasty.

all people are equal vs "the accurate knowledge of god's law" creating a class system with the baptized on top and those who don't know "the truth" on the bottom.

prince had been working up to this since 1992 but it finally emerged in full form in 2000/2001.

the dude used to preach love and now he preaches the sanctity of the theocratic order. it might not make much difference to you, but it makes a difference to me.

This album is not and never will be Lovesexy. The only people who will get somethnig from this spiritually are the already converted. Lovesexy was my best friend's favorite Prince album and she is an antheist that would cook live children in a church to show how much she rejects god exclaim lol There is no point of commonality within most of the lyrics.

That said, contrast this between Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic and Musicology which came before and after. If people can't see the musical brilliance based on that alone, they simply are dead lol

Then a zombie I must be because I don't see it.
I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

i don't see it as a list. prince asks, "would you rather..." -- that's not a list.

he's comparing black slavery to the holocaust and saying black slavery was worse.

quoting myself because i think this needs to be emphasized. the subtext of the claims about the old testament patriarchs being black is that the hyksos (here equated with the jews) invaded egypt and displaced the "rightful" royal lines. some people place this prior to moses leading the israelites across the red sea.

it's saying that the jews are not the original israelites.
