The fact that Keith Urban and Prince are battling it out for the top spot on the charts tells you something about the state of popular music in America... It's shit the bed. Jesus. I'm so grateful for my broad exposure to music. To listen to NEW Prince music and think it's good is like loving a pop tart over a fresh French Pastry.

Totally disagree with you. I think it's really refreshing actually, especially Prince being in the hunt. The musical genius 31 years into his career and 31 or so studio albums in is still a potential chart-topper! If his latest is a pop tart, than I didn't realize how much I loved pop tarts until now.

OK, so Prince might have another #1 in the US. Cool.

So how's the album doing in other countries? Hang on, that's right, there's no official release outside the US.

Oh, I remember now, every fan outside of the States is STILL waiting to be ripped off my some middleman importer.

Go Prince. confused

In the meantime, there's people on here buying multiple copies so Prince will be "number one", and those extra copies will end up forgotten in a drawer.

We need a Lotusflow3r amnesty. After he charts people can hand in there muliple copies which will be displaced around the globe to those without the CD.

Actually we will know on tuesday by 4-5pm EST hits comes out with its chart but if its too close then we will need till wednesday for billbaord which comes out on wed morning around 10-11am.

But there will likely be a monday morning update from hits so he will have a very good idea very soon.

Everything sold b4 the close of business today counts

i still think prince wont be #1 but his numbers a far better then i expected so I am still happy

What new music are you digging? Your "broad exposure" should tell you that P is more than a "pop tart."

I'm just amazed at the fact in 2009, so far the majority of acts vying for the no. 1 spot are actual musicians who actually write their own music. (ie. P, Springsteen, U2, Urban). That's a far cry from the "plastic" cookie-cutter stuff we've been used 2 this past decade.

Thats because the sales have declined to a level its easy for music veterans to chart. look at Flo Rida his digital song sold 636k in its first week and his album is only selling 45k

Very true. But in either case, the music vets, with some exceptions, attract an ol' school audience who still tends to buy or download the whole cd. Whereas, FloRida attracts mainly teens who only care 'bout 1 or 2 cuts from his latest anyway. Not much different from the teenybopper days of the '50s and '60s. Instead of 45s, u have digital song downloads. cool

Of course, if you've ever heard the Flo Rida CD (or most new CD's for that matter) there is only 1 or 2 tracks worth listening to (assuming you like the music).

Besides, kids these days don't care enough for their performers to purchase the music. Most last 1-3 years and then disappear for the next fresh face to take over. Anyone who has ever worked with todays kids know they all have ADHD to some degree

I'm a bigger Prince fan but in these times, Prince can't touch KU in popularity. 2 great guitar player though. Prince will be up there for a week or 2 but Urban will stay up there. Like Billy says in Purple Rain. ain't nobody digging your music but yourself. but now it should read nobody digs Princes music but us. Nobody under 35 buying Prince and there missing out but thats the truth

Prince's 3 CDs are only 11.99, if you buy loads of them, hoard them for a while you will be able to sell them for 24.99 and make a profit... Now that is business. wink

Oh yeah, you will be able to sell them for 24.99 to Prince fans overseas who don't want to spend 77.00 to join lotusflow3r.

I would b careful in saying "nobody" because I noticed several cats 25 and under buying his music at my neck of the woods. Plus, U have several on this forum alone 30 and under. But obviously, the majority of fans r 30 and over. cool

I would not be quick to say that. I made it known to all on here that the CD was coming out 3 days after I turned 30 and I brought 2 of them and will buy another this week. One of my buddies who brought the CD is 31 and one of my best friends who will pick up the CD this week is 34 so to say that people younger than 35 aren't checking Prince out is wrong in every sense of the word.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Ok this is just insanity at this point, because here is where its going. Whether it debuts at 1 or 2 next week it will lucky to be in the top 20. Thats the first point, the last 3 Prince Albums, 3121 (debuted at 1) and Planet Earth (Debuted at 3) all dropped big time, and 3121 had the benefit of a video that was getting alot of play at the time. The only reason "Musicology" held on to the top 10 was the "ticket bundle" and Prince playing shows constantly. So i know whats going to happen in 2 weeks, the threads of "why isnt prince doing more to promote", people deal with it, the loyals are buying it, some 1 copy some 5 copies, it will debut and then fall case closed.

Agreed. Also, I'm pretty certain that Lotus will debut at number 2. Not willing to go into detail now, but it looks more likely than not that Urban will take first place. Prince cut a deal with Target and they held up on their side of the deal, unfortunately a lot of those "sold" CDs will remain shelved until May, when they're finally relegated to the bargain bin.

I hope Prince can get a fifth number 1 record with Lotus, but in my mind it's not likely. Urban has been slightly ahead of Prince all week with Soundscan, and most of those sales were on demand, not obligation as with Lotusflower.

Either way, the set is sinking like a ship next week, as you said. It's sad though, given the high quality of the 3CDs.

I wonder how many people like me who do not live in the US have already bought a US copy through friends or on the Bay.
My copy is being shipped from a Target somewhere in Texas to Australia, so that presumably means my copy gets logged in the Lone star state for chart purposes.

Just out of interest, are you willing to divulge how much $ (AUD) it's cost you?

Hey I'm not 35! And I have other friends in their early to mid 20's who bought this album. Hard core music fans, the guys who follow indy acts and keep their ear to the concert circuit, as well as guys who work in related fields, such as music videogames, know and like Prince music.

I do agree though, that Prince has not reached the mainstream youth crowd though- it's gonna take iTunes and youTube to do that. I still think it's possible- especially if Sanatana could do it.

interesting juxtaposition of the terms 'hard core' and 'follow indy acts'

It will be interesting to see how this album weathers the next few weeks...I'm not so skeptical at this point, I don't think it'll drop off as fast as some are predicting.
