Kids will always search for their own conteporary likes and dislikes.

For the older folks who dont dig him, I think Prince did more to smear his own reputation than anybody could.
...and it can all be traced to one decade in his life The 90's

The amount of people I know who are Michael Jackson fans is mind boggling, yet there's no Prince fans. I've only met one person who liked his music (and he's since moved away to a different college.)

.
what does that tell you.. a guy who paid off a young boy so he wouldnt take him to court ???....i dont get some people....prince is too talented and eclectic too be loved by all....he has been to the top of that mountain in 1984 then decided to release the oddball atwiad album and say goodbye to mass popularity...

It doesn't bother me that they're MJ fans, since I'm one too. But it frustrates me that they can't open their minds to Prince. It seems like, if they like Michael, they should like Prince, but a lot of people are disillusioned, I guess.

Didn't Prince have popularity after the atwiad, though? Sign'O The Times and Lovesexy were popular, as was Diamonds and Pearls. I think he went uncommercial after The Gold Experience, though.

I know the feeling oh so well. Even when Prince was having big hits, I couldn't find anyone who dug Prince. Maybe one or two but certainly not like me. I've been blessed that a got some new friends in the last year and a few of them dig Prince. Not like me but I can talk to them about Prince. One of them got Lotusflow3r this week and one of my other ones will get it next week after he gets paid. It's great to have friends who dig the dude outside of the regular Prince circle like the org, though this isn't half bad lol
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I have encountered that impression from people that I have met. In fact I was talking to a girlfriend last week and she says she doesn't like Prince and her boyfriend can't stand him...

Yet sure enough it comes out to be that all either one of them really know is "Purple Rain."

It just goes to show U how limited their knowlege is...I told her that they were really missing out. cool
[Edited 4/3/09 5:38am]

I find that most people have only heard "that one about rain or something." One thing I love about Prince is that he covers so many genres of music, so he pretty much has something for everyone. I wish people would just look into him a bit more.

That's why we have each other on here prince grouphug grouphug heart

I'd constantly get compliments on my crescent moon ear bling with the star hanging on it..... people would say "I love that! Where did you get it?" and I'd say it's Prince jewelry thanks....that was that....(crickets crickets..lol)

There isn't a sole around that has or would or does even admit to liking Prince.....strange.....I think you have to be a very confident person to be able to admire/appreciate Prince let alone admit it....he sort of represents the unknown and that tends to scare off people....Though Prince is intelligent enough to know it also is very very intriguing cool

I thought I was all alone until I found the org..... wink heart

prince was the bigest selling pop star in the world in 1984....selling more than even jackson but he decided he didnt want mass appeal and released atwiad less than a year later....he was still popular into the 90s but he was never the biggest selling artist again....

I know what you guys talk about, litterly no one I know listen to Prince, most of my friends haven't even heard one of Prince's songs. All my friends listen to artist like Flo Rida, Lil Wayne & Kanye West. When I even mention Prince everyone is like "Are you stuck in the 80's, or?", They just don't appritate real music like Prince's, they rather listen to rappers who only rap about money, bit** and bling instead of listening to real, deep stuff!

Prince is the man! biggrin

i think you will find that there are more fans around you than you think...i know lots of prince fans...most of my family love his music , well most of it...but he is so eclectic that you need to be very open minded to always follow his career...his art always comes before making money...
i know that might sound silly with some of the stunts he pulls but prince could easily do what madonna has done to stay in the charts....releasing the musicial left turn that was the atwiad album nine months after the huge purple rain album shows that his music comes before making money.....prince deserves eternal credit for that and proved he is a true artist...
his albums continue to sell between 1 to 2 million worldwide with each release...even in his 80s peak...parade and sott only sold 3 to 4 million so he still has a large fan base...look at his concerts...he can still pull huge crowds...400,000 went to the london concerts in 2007...so there are fans around you...you just need to find them smile
[Edited 4/3/09 3:28am]

yes
Agreed.. I think where you find a person proclaiming Prince as their favorite, you find one of the most open-minded people in their particular community. With all the career twists and turns, Prince hasn't made it easy on us...except for the tunes themselves. Most folks don't want to risk being labeled weirdos like him, so will stay in that closet, so to speak, lol. ("he's amazing live" is the most common thing I hear...followed by the silent "BUT") And we meet them in line, wearing that outfit they never get to wear, beaming from ear to ear at their 'coming out'. In Hartford,CT a local news anchor sponsored a pre-concert meetup and had that 'exhale' look on his face, lol.

I have a coworker in her 50s who 'came out' to me recently in the office and I was kinda shocked. Politically we're 180 degrees, she could be Palin's slightly older sister I often think to myself lol And having learned I am a big fan, she described forcing her even more conservative man to take her to Musicology...and how he enjoyed it too. Stunned, I just had to give a spiritual high five to the skinny MF with the high voice for again doing 'what they say can't be done'. On occasion, I'll hear her spinning Illusion, Coma, Pimp and Circumstance in between her normal classic rock.

I've got one friend nearby that I can count on, and it's reassuring to know LoveSexyDC is around, so I'm good, lol. But where you find the relatively open-minded, even where close-mindedness prevails, there are potential P fans lurking...

Many of my friends were not hip 2 Prince. They would say things like"Isn t he gay?" like that matters. Or" Prince is wierd ". Being that I myself am Fabulous, they notice that Im playing P when they come 2 my home or in my car. In the past 25+yrs. I have converted 4 souls once I treated them 2 a Prince concert they were hooked and they never looked back. Prince is DEEP! and FINE! cool cool

I got into him the same way I've gotten into a lot of artists I'm into. I saw his name somewhere (most likely on Wikipedia) and thought, "now there's an artist I never looked into." I'd heard a few hits like Kiss and Raspberry Beret, so I got some greatest hits album and that lead me to get another album and so on and so on. Purple Rain sealed the deal of course.
Another thing that helped is that Prince is such a character. I remember I was really into Ozzy a few years back for the same reason. Looking back, I'm a bit ashamed of that particular obsession...
Prince actually has musical talent though, so I know I won't ever tire of him or look back and be ashamed. biggrin

A real problem is that many people "think" that they don't like Prince, for various reasons (he looks gay, he's an old 80s has been, has not put out an album in years, etc) but those people really don't know him or his music well at all. I ran a music store for many years (Sam Goody) and would talk about Prince to people who said they can not stand him, but found themselves really liking - or even loving some of his music when they heard it playing in the store, which I would do frequently.

And it made me realise that a lot of people like a bit of what they are fed through radio. Thats the limit of their musical experience. Thats why prince hates current radio output. and it also gave me the impression that people like what they are supposed to like (maybe to be social) and don't dig music as much as me.

Most people I play prince to like it, up until i tell them that it is prince. then their mental image of prince comes into their mind and suddenly they don't like the music anymore (which amazes me and makes me think people are listening not just with their ears). Their loss I suppose. but they usually mention his public fuckups - 'slave' on the cheek, we are the world (in their minds, they haven't got the time to go into the reasons why, when a headline sticks).

I think these people are missing out on some great music just because they had some media hyped event turn them off prince. I still like some Oasis songs even though i know Liam Gallagher is still alive.

I get "Yeah I like him, I saw Purple Rain when I was a kid..." or in the last few years its just "shirts versus blouses."
I kinda like that though, it's like I'm in an exclusive club(One that doesn't cost me $77 a year).
I too had trouble finding people to go to Prince shows with me, (yeah I'm in Atlanta too) then once when I got in the front row, about 10 people called me the next day to say they saw me there! After that everybody wanted to come to the show with me!
