This story is funny everytime it resurfaces. I believe everything actually happened just as she said it did; because everyone knows that Prince has asshole tendencies, meaning he has a tendency to be an asshole at times; like when Weird Al did an interview years back and talked about how Prince didn't want anyone to look at him during the Grammys (can't remember which year that was) lol ; and also mentioned how Prince kept refusing to give him permission to parody any of his songs...Al's still probably bitter about that shit.

Honestly, I think it's funny and don't see why anyone would be that offended by what Prince has to say when it comes to what language they choose to use whether in an interview or while on the toilet. I've come to the understanding that people ususally get offended by other people's opinions when there is truth to said opinions or they actually care and/or greatly respect that person. If that person's opinions are based off of lies and/or the offended person doesn't really give two shits about that individual, than why get soo offended? shrug I don't get it and probably never will.

Sinead always seemed to pride herself on being very opinionated, out-spoken, and extremely passionate about her beliefs; and obviously enjoyed swearing like a drunken sailor (otherwise she wouldn't talk like that), so I don't get why she was so offended by what Prince or anybody else had to say about the language she chose to use? Yeah, he's not her dad, but he has a right to his opinion, and he probably didn't think it was cool for her to be cussin in interviews when his name was so closely linked to hers at that time. If he had really wanted to be mean, he could have made some really ugly and spiteful comments about her bald head (it wasn't cute or amusing to me; sorry), but he chose not to go there I guess. Personally, I really think that she was talking out of the side of her neck on this one and shouldn't have been slapping the hand that gave her career such a big boost into the spotlight.

In the end, Prince is the one who has gotten the last laugh; because he wrote one of her biggest hits. She can tell him to go fuck himself til she's blue in the face, because it's not going to matter. Everytime they play her version of "Nothing Compares 2 U", he gets paid; and when they play his version, he gets paid again and she don't get jack shit; so there's Prince's 'Fuck U Back' with a nice middle finger to go with it as he heads off to the bank to cash two royalty checks...if I was him, I would have just laughed in her face. Personally, I always hated her version of the song since the first time I heard it and I hadn't even heard Prince's version yet. I love Prince's version with Rosie Gaines because Rosie kills it way more than Sinead ever could, but that's just my twocents

Sinead isn't the first artist Prince has said shit about. He was pissed at the remake of "Darling Nikki" a few years ago and he bitched at Genuine for doing that awful remake of "When Doves Cry", which was totally warranted IMO, because that cover was completely uncalled for and totally insulting to fans of his music...yes, it was that bad. disbelief This is probably one of many reasons why Prince doesn't like to let other people cover his songs now...mofos either bitch or fuck the song up... Oh, well, sucks for Prince, because he could be getting mad paid right now.

As if Prince hasn't done absolutely putrid covers of classics like "I Can't Make You Love Me," "Creep" and "Every Day is a Winding Road." whofarted Surely, beauty also lies in the ears of the beholder.

By your standard, Prince has hurled an insult or two with his covers of truly great songs...

Well your 2 american cents aren't worth much as your economy crashes and disappears, are they pal?!
Frankly i kinda agree with you that Prince and Rosie 'killed it'. More like fucking slaughtered it if you ask me - then defecated on its freshly slain corpse. Why is it that black RnB chicks have to constantly throw pretentious waves of vocal jibberjabber all over perfectly fine lyrics/melody? Seriously, they all come off as so fucking SAME, try-hard and bland! It's led to a generation of confused wannabe hacks trying to do the exact same SHIT on American Idol, thinking it somehow enhances their dreary, samelike performances.
Sineads is and always will be, the DEFINATIVE version. She tooked an uncared for song and truely gave it wings. Prince then jumped on the bandwagon, like a deadbeat father who had left a child a birth, only to return to milk the glory when the kid made something of itself years later... He's ridden on the back of that sucker ever since - all thanks to Miss O'Conner.
She's who deserves respect here. But unlikely amongst so many purple sheep...

I love this outrageous story! Prince is my favorite, but I like Sinead too. She was right to tell him off if he truly spoke to her that way.

It's true that I never heard of her before "Nothing Compares 2 U", but even with Prince as my favorite artist, I admit that her version is far, far superior to either The Family's version or (worse) the version on The Hits/The B-Sides. I've become more familiar with her work, and she's really a great talent. "Troy" and "No Man's Woman" are probably my two favorite songs of hers.

Sinead O'Connor has revealed that she told Prince to "f*** himself" when the two disagreed over her swearing in interviews.

The singer had previously recorded a cover of one of the star's tracks for her 1990 album I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got.

O'Connor said: "I didn't hit it off with Prince. I met him after I'd recorded 'Nothing Compares 2 U' and he said he didn't appreciate how I used bad language in my interviews.

"I told him to go f*** himself and he wasn't very happy."

I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got is re-released by EMI in a two-disc version on April 13.

Sinead is still using Prince to sell records. She has built an entire career around that one song and she hates that fact.

Trust me, I don't disagree with you at all. Prince has done some bad covers in his years. I'm not to fond of "Betcha By Golly Wow" or "LaLaLaLa Means I love you" and absolutely hate "Every Day is a Winding Road". I've never heard his version of 'Creep' or the original and haven't really had a real desire to hear either after all the lawsuit stuff started flying about and so shortly after Prince made such a big deal about people using his music and image without his permission (pot-kettle Mr. Nelson), so I can't give a yay or nay on this one because I was deterred due to drama.

Honestly, I don't mind 'eye Can't Make U Love Me', because I've always loved the lyrics of that song enough to not pay attention to who sings it really (unless the person is totally tone deaf and monotone); plus I've heard some pretty awful versions of it on 'American Idol' on the audition shows more than once (only part of that show I can stand); so I can't really dog Prince's version that bad because it could have been even worse than it was...trust me. I really do enjoy his version of "One of Us" mainly because of the guitar; but the Joan Osbourne original is still the best and the version by Cheryl 'Pepsi' Riley on the "Diary of a Mad Black Woman" soundtrack is outstanding, but all three versions sound different from each other, so like you said, "Beauty is in the ear of the beholder".

Please don't get it twisted into believing that I dig every single song Prince has ever done, whether cover or original; because I absolutely hate "Raspberry Beret" and "How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore" no matter whether he's singing them or someone else is. Trust me, I'm far from being someone who thinks that everything Prince touches is a masterpiece. There's many things that he has said and done that absolutely piss me off, but his remark to Sinead definitely isn't one of them. If he was always condescending towards other artists, I would loss a lot of respect for him, but he's complimented several artists' covers of his songs. I've never heard him say a negative thing about Chaka Khan, Alicia Keys, Beyonce, TLC, Mariah Carey, Tevin Campbell, or Melissa Morgan; and he never said he didn't like Sinead's version of his song at any point...he just didn't like her attitude and I doubt he's the only one who feels like that.

Regardless of how angry people are about this past 'insult' Prince bestowed upon Sinead, he wasn't insulting her music at any point in that story. He was telling her that he didn't like all the swearing that she did in interviews...just that simple. I didn't read anywhere where he insulted her for her musical talents. He just didn't like the potty mouthing, which he has a right to say what he feels just like anybody else, famous or not. He didn't like the swearing and decided to have a prude moment and let her know; he has a right to his opinion. He talked to her, one-on-one,and let her know how he felt; and she obviously disagreed with him, because she cussed him out and decided to tell the world about the incident which probably made her feel better, so good for her.

Like I originally said; I think this whole story is still funny after all these years and don't really see why she got soo offended by what little Prince had to say unless she really strongly cared about his opinions, which is surprising to me because girl pissed off a whole religion with one single motion. It was a picture; people got offended by the mutilation of a polaroid... lol still get a good laugh everytime I think about that little protest because everyone took it waay to seriously....it was a photo; it wasn't like she threw a rock at the popemobile...that would have really been hysterical. I think that they should have just put some gloves on and gone a couple rounds; unless her stories about Prince hitting her are true; which I don't believe they are, because Sinead looks like she could whip Prince's ass, but appearances can sometimes be very deceiving.

spit falloff lol Wow, that was the best laugh I've had all day. What the hell is 'tooked' btw? First, you insult a whole country because of my opinion on the Prince/Sinead argument. Okay, replace Prince with Bush in this scenario and than I would kinda understand the insult, but using a Prince forum to talk about a country's failing economy is just simple-minded, ignorant, sad, and kinda childish really. Like I originally stated, I heard Sinead's version waay before I heard Prince's, so originally I had nothing to compare it to. I just don't like her delivery of the song, just like how I hate the album version of "Gotta Broken heart Again", but absolutely love the version on the "Live At The Aladdin" DVD. Same person singing both versions, but one version I love and the other I hate, so shrug . Honestly, I actually like the version of "Nothing Compares 2 U" that's on the "One Night Alone...Live" album the most now and Rosie isn't on that one...Candy Dulfer outshines Prince on that version IMO...love her. mushy

Regardless of your Sinead love fest, you can't ignore that she covered a song, WRITTEN AND COMPOSED BY PRINCE. Before she did the song, she was just what I consider a 'local celebrity', meaning that she was big in just her homeland. That song gave her international stardom...PERIOD and all she had to do was sing the words that were written on the paper placed in front of her. Nothing against any artist who doesn't write their own material in the beginning of their careers, because there are lots who don't, but the singer will never be better than the songwriter to me. No matter how great a singer may be, that person ain't shit without lyrics and nobody with an IQ above 90 can argue with that point...unless you would like to have a go at it, my friend.

Lastly, if America's economy goes down, than everybody else's will follow shortly behind it, because if American's aren't buying foreign products than everybody is going to be pretty fucked, now aren't they? People who disrepect a whole country because of one person's actions really need to grow up. I don't yell at the waiter when the food is bad, because he didn't cook it, he just put it on the table...usually only fucktards like to blame the wrong people. Plus, last I heard, there's all these British artists trying to sound like black Jazz singers, so what's all that crap about just black RnB American singers doing it...I've heard it from all different races of people throughout world. Wow, you're waay special...ed. Thanks again for the laugh and like I said in the original post, "I've come to the understanding that people ususally get offended by other people's opinions when there is truth to said opinions or they actually care and/or greatly respect that person. If that person's opinions are based off of lies and/or the offended person doesn't really give two shits about that individual, than why get soo offended?" Just my American twocents , so you have a nice day, pal. cool
