I'm more of a casual type fan (and a fan of the ballads and slow jams at the moment), but I have liked what I've heard so far.
The 2 songs from Bria was also nice.
It's so hard to tell what the albums will be like based on the handful of songs, but I think based on other reviews (not this one) from others who have heard the albums,
it might be for the hardcore fan's taste.

If thats the case, it wont be for me. I like eclectic but not chaotic. I hated TRC. It was just not great to me. I understood the musicality of it was genious but I would never pull that album out for a second listen unless I was high on crack then it would make for a good movie.

Another one like me is hideous. Dumb lyrics.

That's the thing, I'm not a hardcore fan myself, and while I personally did liked a song from TRC (a ballad, I think),
I don't understand all the rave reviews from fans.
They compare it to previous albums and draw comparisons, and can cite examples of riffs and drums and depths of layers,
while I'm just hearing it from the surface.

This review is more like it, except that I disagree with him on Bria Valente - I like the tautness of her voice, plus for a debut album, from what I've heard, she has a future...if you know who will give her some breathing room to have one.

But no one seems to be getting the name of Bria's album right, so let me make it clear - it's elix-i-r, not Elix-e-r. ELIXIR!!!!! Are these fools even bothering to run a spell check any more?

i think it's probably gonna be elixer, like it or not.

even on lotusflow3r.com it's spelled with an E lol

Actually if you look at the album cover its ElixE(backwards)R. That is where they are getting the spelling from, I think.

We have sort of an intimate relationship with P's music. More than a critic would have. We will LISTEN intently to music that they will pass over, and we will find little hidden treasures in those tracks.

It is for that reason that I do not give critical revues too much leverage in my opinion.

The more I listen... REALLY closely listen to PEs tracks, the more I find elements that I fall in love with.

The main thing we like about P, I believe, is his ability to tell his stories. I just really dig his voice and his energy. I could listen to P read his grocery listen and I would think it's cool. He just has that kind of voice and personality.
We are all so full of doody here

I'll take this review over the "great" reviews from Amazon listeners (people that gave five stars to a 3 cd set before it even came out.)

Take this dickhead's review as much as you want mate. That's fair enough. On his blog, he writes that he does not understand LF and that he would prefer being home while being at the listening party.
He writes as well that there are many radiohead tunes that suck.

lol

He's right about that. And I love Radiohead!

Prince, is, was, and always has been an underground artist who hit it big 4 a while.

If you consider from 1979 to 1994 for a while, then, yes.

Besides, underground artists don't sell out arenas. wink

Prine sold more Dirty Mind Lps after Purple Rain. He wasn't a BIG star until '84, then ATWIAD made people wonder if he was a flash in the pan... PR is his biggest hit, and ever since he has been loved by few and hated by most. Some of his other albums were big hits due to the hype-machine that kissed his ass... Look at the best performers/musicians/talents ever... Small fanbases, critics darlings (for a while) but most people just say "yeah-yeah, he's OK"... If you don't give his music the time (one listen and a badly written review don't give much credit to your opinion, matey) you won't "get" it... I'm still hearing new things in SOTT, for example... Let's face it, he's a minority hit, and all the better for it. Lotusflower will be great (and be embarrasiing at the same time). What Prince album hasn't been?

Is anyone actually surprised by this review?

After hearing the by-the-numbers dad rock of Colonized Mind and Wall of Berlin with their inane and ignorant lyrics this should come as a shock to no one. Yes, Prince has turned up the guitar in the mix but it's hardly exciting rock music, or exciting music, period. It's plodding, boring adult contemporary music with capable guitar work. Nothing more, nothing less. And of course, the lyrics of "Colonized Mind" coming from someone who's a religious bigot these days, gleefully following whatever his elders tell him is 'truth' smacks with the sort of irony one would think only Hollywood could write. Then we have Crimson and Clover which is, at best, a b-side. Again, more capable guitar playing but hardly anything exciting to anyone outside of the Purple Kingdom.

Toss in the trend chasing Disney Pop of MplsSound and you have the makings for yet another lackluster release from Prince. And the Bria disc, well, if anyone can actually stomach listening to that, they deserve an easy-listening medal.

Obviously I'd like to hear the whole thing for myself .... but to be honest from what we have heard so far i agree with your post.

Prince at the moment does not have enough decent songs to release a 9 song album, I really dont get why he feels the need to release 30 songs at once.

Weren't reviews for Parade, SOTT and Lovesexy not all that positive with critics when they came out? I may have had the albums then but I wasn't into the news at that time. This is also not me comparing Lotusflow3r with those 3.

Thats a good point. The Sott reviews were ok, Parade were middle of the road, and Lovesexy's sucked.

I'm not concerned with this review. I generally consider it a bad sign if "critics" like it. Bsides, Prince music usually takes more than one listen to fully appreciate it. As an example of his obvious poor taste, he didn't even mention Colonized Mind as a good song. I love that song! And, I didn't consider Rainbow Children to be a "Jehovah Witness Manifesto". Rainbow Children was a nice, different groove...just good music from real musicians as Prince would say. I'm looking 4ward to the release, though not sure if I should go down the street to the Target or download from the site. confused

I thought it was quite a fare review despite not having heard the albums. He gave praise where he thought it due and criticism likewise. What more do you want from a review when you're going to buy an album? If a non-fan was to buy it then surely he doesn't want some sycophantic appraisal?

Listen up everyone.....
Never mind what you just read.....go by what you already know about Prince as he has released many many albums over the years, and they all groove. Ok....there are always a few tracks here and there that one may not dig. but Prince always delivers the goods. In this case just by the first few gems that sneaked out on his website and by via internet radio.....the cd's are going to ROCK!! HOLD ON 2 YO WIGS AND PREPARE FOR MARCH 29th AT TARGET!!!!!

the "problem" with this review is that it tells us absolutely zero
about the albums that we didn't know yet.

the bits we've heard from the lotusflower album, including reports
on "boom" and "dreamer" from the rare live performances.

we also know that lotusflower doesn't have just guitar based songs
but also slow stuff like 4ever and cocktail jazz and a dance/funk
track called "$".

we know that mplsound contains a few balads, a cover of u're gonna
c me and a "space aged ballad" called better with time which was
inspired by kirsten scott thomas.

plus the "controversy" connection to mplsound which was trumpeted
at dr funkenberry months ago as a quote from john blackwell.

i don't see anything in this review that i didn't already know.
there are no lyric quotes, no real song descriptions and no word
on musicians playing on any of the songs or guests.

Yeah. this review comes off to me a someone who just doesn't like Prince. They describe the first album as an album with hendrix like guitar playing with strange and religious filed lyrics. The 2nd albums as an 8 track dance funk album with a random slow jam (ie: the black album) and a album from podige with generic r&b sound and a pretty women without a strong voice... (ie: vanity and apollina 6) as i said before this sounds really good... to a prince fan...

Guess what? He didn't say he disliked TRC. Another reason to not worry about this review is THERE IS NEVER A REASON TO WORRY ABOUT A REVIEW OF A POPULAR MUSIC CD. Also, how are the opinions of the people here about the album NOT just "one person's" opinion? Since none of you have heard it, how can you even say this guy is wrong? Art is ALWAYS subjective. The album may suck to this guy, (and some people on here) but not to others. My lord, people - it really doesn't matter. The music Prince makes is entertainment. How about instead of gettingmad when someone expresses what they believe about a new release we just accept that some people will like it and others won't. No one is wrong about their opinion. The new record(s) are important to me as a musician, but for me to get angry and indignant - well, there are more important things in the world for me to get worked-up about. Selah.
