There called Bruce, U2, Neil Young and Tom Petty fans. I know, I should not have named names!

Let's not be snobbish, folks. Of the artists you've named, Bruce and Neil in particular are songwriting geniuses whose output arguably outweighs Prince's And I say this as someone who considers Prince his fave artist of all time, and who doesn't even particularly like Neil.

There's no need to dismiss the work of others to feel better about Prince. Broaden your minds a little!

I'm a Springsteen fan but saying his output outweight Prince's is absolutely ridiculous.
Bruce can do anything, he will always have the press with him. He is pro Obama. he is politcally correct if you know what I mean.

In his last CD there are atrocious tunes like Surprise Surprise or The Queen of the supermarket to name just two that have had very positive reviews.
Let me tell you sthing; if P released a tune as bad as Surprise Surprise the media would kill him instantly.

I'll take this review over the "great" reviews from Amazon listeners (people that gave five stars to a 3 cd set before it even came out.)

Then you must be a critic if you're going to give your own review. rolleyes Critics are sometimes failed musicians but usually have a vast knowledge of information of music. Just because I'm not a mother, doesnt mean that I dont know how to love like one or at least be a mother fucker. biggrin

Take this dickhead's review as much as you want mate. That's fair enough. On his blog, he writes that he does not understand LF and that he would prefer being home while being at the listening party.
He writes as well that there are many radiohead tunes that suck.

No it wasn't. It's just a damn shame that there wasn't anymore hits from that era or even after that. That's for another thread I guess. sad

I think it could have been a HUGE hit if promoted properly and if Prince and WB hadnĀ“t had a feud back then. I Hate U was not really a big hit in the commercial sense but a lot of non fans who heard it liked it immediately, especially the remix was getting a lot of airplay on RnB stations.Sure, he made a video for it but other than that, the song quickly disappeared.

I live here in DC... DC and Detroit were and still are to a degree Prince cities. Big fan base here. WPGC used to play I Hate U and it was hit for him here.... but honestly the shorter version was played. That long version with that horribly distorted guitar that totally ruined it IMO hurt the song.

Remixes for the Most Beautiful girl were much better

the rainbow children is the only prince album i don't like. except for the songs work pt.1 and Family Name on it.

it's far 2 sporadic and unfocussed. i always felt it was a left over's album, where prince just tried to make music out of left over samples.

i hope the new albums arn't like that.

but i never listen to reviewers.

I didn't like TRC either... I tried but it never spoke to me and honestly the fact that I was trying to like it bothered me. Just last week I was putting some CDs away. Came accross TRC and opened the case... the CD wasn't even in it. I threw the case away and didn't even think twice about the missing CD. Not trying to be negative but rather just being honest. I may have listened to that thing 3 times total... and there was nothing for me to grow on. It was awful

Not sure what Bruce's politics has to do with the quality of his songwriting. Also, where have you seen positive reviews for those two tracks you mentioned, aside from Rolling Stone's customary slob-job? Bruce's latest album, and those tracks in particular, have not been very well received.

And I stand by my statement that Bruce's catalog outweigh's Prince's. Prince has done very little to develop his skills as a songwriter over the years, and he's not very disciplined about revising his work either. Bruce labours over his work, and it shows.

Again, I actually prefer Prince's music on the whole, but in terms of pure songwriting, Bruce takes the prize. And, if we were to compare output this decade, Bruce would win again.

But, this is seriously offtopic. I can't wait to judge the new music myself!

Yeah right. Devils and Dust was his most boring cd ever. Bad attempt of a new Nebraska or Ghost of Tom Joad. Human Touch and Lucky Town are full of fillers.

Magic is zzzz. Radio friendly flat crap. His last one apart from a few great gems is weak as well.

Tunnel of love was not fantastic, was it?

So yeah we have a few amazing albums like Darkness on the edge of Town, Born to Run,The River, Born in the USA and Nebraska.

Which is already quite an achievemnt in man's life.

The rest of it is like many P albums full of fillers, repetitive writting.

Sthing else I'd like to mention as well. Lyrics wise, BS has become so lazy. I mean this man used to write great lyrics back in the 70's and 80's. All gone.

let me tell you something. Do you play music yourself?

Cuz BS technique to compose tunes is always the same. Always the same people's chords used over and over again. And I'm not even mentionning his ballads; always the same tricks over and over again.

I loved the Pete Seeger session era cuz it was pure fresh air. I love him as a performer as well.

But his songwritting has kept going down an down.

And to finish, P went a lot further musically than BS will ever do. BS has always admitted being limited technically. There is nothing to be ashamed of.

I for 1 never listen to with all my heart another's opinion of any of my boy Prince's material. That is just what it is their heart, eyes and eyes, NOT MINES.

I have been listening to Prince ever since the age of 9 (I Wanna Be Your Lover) and all throughout the Journey, I have felt what Prince wants to accomplish in his music. Mainly as what was said years ago by him "I just want to play my guitar" - Musicology. So I say here let him play and if one doesn't want to listen well that is there choice. As for me and my Family Prince is here to stay.

How wrong Billy Sparks was when he said "Your music means nothing to no one but yourself" 1984

Learn to play the piano and the guitar. Work on BS' tunes then p's and you'll understand how wrong you are in terms of songwriting.

I play both. Learn to appreciate music for reasons beyond technical sophistication and you'll learn that's there's a lot more to music than tossing in suspended chords and unnecessary key changes.

I respect Neil and Springsteen but come on now. They have been stuck in one trick pony land for ages just as Pince has regarding the matieral he writes. Bruce with his everyman jeans we gotta get outta this town songs and moral ambiguity and Neil with is schtick.Prince could write like that if he wanted to in his sleep but he choosed to be a pop artist (though Id love a thoughtful introspective release such as Bruce or another TRC like material), but when is Bruce and 'dem' going to change up as well? Reminds me of Princes statement regardin his loss to the Joshua Tree. There's a tremendous bias regarding these aging rock stars writing compared with an aging pop stars writing.

i don't know about bruce because i've never been a fan of his, but you're way out of your element with your dismissal of neil young. i think he's an example of how an artist gets more experimental and musically daring with age. prince should only be so lucky to be kissed by the same muse in his older years.

You know, I really liked Chocolate Box snippet. I like the funny sounding instrument noises and when he does that Bob George shit or the high munchkin voice.

Crimson and Clover and Colonized Mind I thought were very thoughtful rock pieces and the snippet from Bria, All Nite was interesting but not enough to say yay or nay.

But it hasn't been EXCITING. Like Prince has misplaced his mojo. It feels creatively stifled. I know thats saying alot for hearing so little, but it used to be he would put out a song and you were practically drool

So yeah, I'm hopeful for the album. It will be interesting, thats for sure. And you?

I'm more of a casual type fan (and a fan of the ballads and slow jams at the moment), but I have liked what I've heard so far.
The 2 songs from Bria was also nice.
It's so hard to tell what the albums will be like based on the handful of songs, but I think based on other reviews (not this one) from others who have heard the albums,
it might be for the hardcore fan's taste.

If thats the case, it wont be for me. I like eclectic but not chaotic. I hated TRC. It was just not great to me. I understood the musicality of it was genious but I would never pull that album out for a second listen unless I was high on crack then it would make for a good movie.

Another one like me is hideous. Dumb lyrics.

This review is more like it, except that I disagree with him on Bria Valente - I like the tautness of her voice, plus for a debut album, from what I've heard, she has a future...if you know who will give her some breathing room to have one.

But no one seems to be getting the name of Bria's album right, so let me make it clear - it's elix-i-r, not Elix-e-r. ELIXIR!!!!! Are these fools even bothering to run a spell check any more?
