Hmmmm, it's ok, kinda bog standard. Just what Prince has been releasing lately, bog standard. I hope this isn't on the new album, but Crimson & Clover is awsome, sounds fresh and funky, hope that IS on the new album. | |

The catchiest and funkiest beat you will hear and have heard in a VERY long time. I dont know why, but Prince and that Linn just go together just like chalk and a blackboard! The beat is really sharp, funky and just holds the whole song together. The second great thing about this is instrumental at the end of the song that harps back to the Prince and For You album, for example the instrumental of I wanna be your lover and the ending of Just as long as were together. Its almost as if he dug out those (unnameable) instruments from the 70's and just started to have a jam on them - and they sound great! The biggest dissappointment is the actual verse and chorus, and the really bad lyrics. Its almost like 90's gangsta throwaway stuff and its just not the same or as interesting as his previous tunes, So what saves it for me is the jam, the beat and the raw funk that pushes this along - which is great which shows us that Prince still has it when it comes to the FUNK, but he is slightly lacking when it comes to song writing, lyrics, etc. | |

Reminds me more of "Movie Star" than the stuff in the 90s. The only thing I *don't* like is the vocal modulation. Other than that, I like it. I really like the bridge and the melody. There are some superficial similarities but Movie Star has a real hook "tonight, I am movie star" There is a playfulness to the boasts and you can feel the bravado of a young man just coming into his own. Not to mention the implications of "boy or girl, it dont matter no more, I'm hot!" Musically of course the groove of Movie Star is magical and this new song issomewhat pedestrian "new-jack"ish....with tiny flourishes of the Time. |

See, here's more of that 'things he did a long time ago are magical, things he does now are so mediocre.' I don't buy it or agree with it. I hear this song - it's badass. It makes me groove, I like the playful lyrics, and do in fact think that if *any* 50 year old man can still be playful with what he says, it's Prince. Dude made a jam. It's fun. It's Now. It's Movie Star. It's House Quake. It's just Prince having fun making enjoyable music. Sometimes I think you guys just overanalyze everything and feel the need to be critical as if it's some badge of honor. Crap is crap...we all pretty much agree when something truly garbage comes from Prince, with only a few apologists as detractors. This isn't a crap track, however, it's exactly what he wants it to be - fun and funky. I'm sold. Based on what someone else here had mentioned, I let my girlfriend, who likes R&B and Hip-Hop far more than me (meaning I don't listen to anything even resembling R&B or hip-hop EXCEPT for Prince), and her thoughts on Never B Another were:
* Sounds like a party for people over 30 with that 'Whooooo!' that repeats * Feels like hip-hop from the 90s * It could have been cool when I was a teenager So...take it for what it's worth. i've listened to it a few times now. it's grown on me a little bit, but that's probably because my mind wanders and i don't actually hear any of it and then realize it's over without remembering what it actually sounded like. Yup first 3 seconds it was a wrap for me. I hated it. Lame scream in the intro, dated instrumentation, vain immature lyrics. Recipe for whack. The other 4 were on a whole nother level, Im wit that all the way! Looks like this funk record might be dated recycled 80's prince sound wit no edge or genious.
