Lyrically, it is a paradox at best. I can see some of the points he's trying to make, but to me it's too much like someone gave him a picture, told him that's the way it was, and he didn't challenge or question it (by definition, belief - dare I say a colonized mind is trying to tell us about the colonized mind?)
I also couldn't help but to think of a lyric on the song Ever After, from W&L's new album - "faith is for the dying..."

toejam said: Musically it's great, but I must say that some of the lyrics irk me a bit - in particular the evolution slagging. How anyone can not believe in evolution with the amount of evidence that is out there is beyond me.
I'm also not a fan of his slagging of democracy. Sure, it's not perfect, but it's the best political system humans have managed so far. But hey, I've come to accept that as much as I respect him and his religion, there are some times when I just have to grit my teeth and listen to the next line. It's no biggie. Still a great track otherwise. Same here. I like the download/upload idea, but some of the verses I can't go with. Others are interesting and alright with me. Still, the song grows into such an amazing wild guitar fest it's amazing. And the chorus is great.

I love everything about the song. Someone mentioned The War...it's an apt comparison in that it has that same stream of consciousness quality.
Colonized mind is my favorite by far because my favorite thing about Prince besides his groove, is getting to hang out inside his mind. An extremely interesting place. Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

Fixed the bolded part of the lyrics...
At least it's what it sounds like to my ears... Colonized Mind Upload The evolution principle U see a rock on the shore - And say, "It's always been there" Download No responsibility Do what U want - Nobody cares Upload The master race idea Genetically disposed - 2 rule the world Download Future full of isolated Full of isolated - Boys and girls Upload The 2 party system The lesser of 2 dangers - Illusion of choice Download Their form of fascism Nothing really ever changes - U never had a voice If U look, U're sure gonna find Throughout mankind's history A Colonized Mind The one in power makes law Under which the colonized fall Without God, it's just the blind leading the blind Upload A joint venture record deal It's just another way for the 'man' to steal While he's sticking U with the bill Download A temporary acquisition of fleeting fame and fortune Nothing to leave in your will Upload A child with no father Download No respect for authority Upload A child with no mother Download A hard time showing love If U look, U're sure gonna find Throughout mankind's history A Colonized Mind The one in power makes law Under which the colonized fall Without God, it's just the blind leading the blind Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

I get that you are REALLY anti-Prince, but that statement is over the top, at least to me it is. Prince has definitely grown as a guitarist. That is one of the things that really impresses me about him. He continues to grow as a player unlike many veteran artists who I can tell do not put much effort into "playing" anymore. I have seen Prince too many times over the years to say that his guitar playing peaked 20 years ago. For example, I was not that crazy about the song Guitar when I first heard it, but when I saw him play it live in Minneapolis he added an incredible solo - actually two of them. It's cool if you don't dig the new stuff, but let's keep things in perspective. perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...

this right: Upload The master race idea Genetically disposed - 2 rule the world Download Future full of isolated Full of isolated - Boys and girls - Prince Hmmm. well then he should be happy Obama won, no? I'm confused, either you think voting is good because a black guy is in or you quite bitching!! So is that verse in the song the reason why you're really pissed off, because you think that is what it is referencing? 'cause your rants sure demonstrate it. Upload The master race idea Genetically disposed - 2 rule the world Download Future full of isolated Full of isolated - Boys and girls Anyway, in regards to the above verse, I was discussing that verse with others, and some say it sounds more like it is in relation to religion; referencing the human race in general, being the master race ruling the world, but yet full of lost boys and girls isolated from God. At least that's what some of us are getting from that line. But, then again, we could be wrong. Now this verse: Upload The 2 party system The lesser of 2 dangers - Illusion of choice Sounds like he is referencing American politics, our party system of Republicans/Democrats, and the past election where the "lesser" of 2 dangers being the "Illusion of choice" (choice referencing Obama);and the "illusion" that some voters had/have of Obama, by referring to him as a "Messiah", a "Saint", a "Miracle worker" , so to speak, when in fact he is not; he is "just a man, a human being": who cannot implement change as President in this country alone. He will need the strength of his faith and God to help him through it. Along with the participation of Americans who are demanding the change. In my personal opinion, those who actually think Obama could wave a wand and cure the social/political/economic ills of this country alone, need to be aware that if Americans want to see change, then they have to participate as well, and work towards that change. Change of some attitudes would definitely help, and finding other ways to work towards the change they want to see happen in this country. Anyway, that's my take on it. [Edited 12/20/08 10:47am]

He's saying that you don't really have a choice (only an illusion of choice) because really only two candidates are in the race..."the lesser of two dangers" is who you will vote for. If you indeed did have a "choice" for who would run your country, the ballot would include many people. This may be Prince's most thought provoking song. If you indeed did have a "choice" for who would run your country, the ballot would include many people. This may be Prince's most thought provoking song. Dug too deep? Not really. A verse in a song could be interpreted 100 ways, such as Shu's and Rockability's interpretation of the verse before that one. We all don't see things the same way. It's like looking at a piece of art an interpreting it as one sees it. But I have to say I agree about the 2 party reference, and I do agree with you that he "may" be stating our choices were an illusion because we were limited to only two candidates, but would he have said the same if there was a third party? Some may have thought even a three-party system wasn't enough. My interpretation of the "illusion of Obama" wasn't really too deep, because many did have the "illusion" of Obama as a Messiah. But I do appreciate your input. I do agree with you though, that "Colonized Mind" is a thought-provoking song, and may even be controversial to some; with Politics/Social issues/Religion all mixed in. [Edited 12/20/08 12:52pm]

Great song. He's being honest and it's a deeper song than what he's released recently. Gotta admire a guy who can make a groovy, funky song about something so anti-mainstream. "Don't you think one of the charms of marriage is that it makes deception a necessity for both parties?"
