"There'll Never B Another Like Me" is basically the same song as "Undisputed".

Dude that's bullshit. While both kinda suck those songs are nothing alike. Do you hear a fucking lyndrummachine in Undisputed, because all I hear on that tune is Kirky J messing it up.

Is the structure of the tunes the same? The rhythm, the melody? No. The rhytms are not alike and Undisputed hardly HAS a melody, it's mostly Prince singing/rapping as a robot and then a lot of shouting. Is there anybody rapping on There'll never be another like me? No dude is singing, albeit pretty bloody boring.

Shit, I could go on, does Undisputed has the kind of guitar playing and a solo like NBALM? The same keyboards sounds? The same lyrical theme then?

No, no, no!

Did you even listen at all? rolleyes

The rest could easily have been on Chaos & Disorder.

lol

What? Just because it has a lot of guitar?! You gotta be kidding me. The guitar playing on these new songs is nothing alike that on C&D. The sound of the guitar, the style of his playing, the length of the solo's, the rhythms used, plus the religiously laden lyrics is much more TRC and Planet Earth than C&D.

You make a good point that you can't call this new stuff 'innovating' as some here did, but for the rest you are just talking shit to get the panties of these fans in a bunch.

Right on. These tracks sound NOTHING like C&D. The overall feel is way different, The bass lines much more progressive, guitar less crunchy and no bar chord rhythms. One doesn't have to like it, but for sure this is not C&D revisited...

i wasn't overwhelmed by the new tracks, but i was pleased by what i heard and modestly surprised that i wasn't immediately non-plussed with what i was hearing.

after the "planet earth" album and the "meh"-fest that was this year's live CD, i've learned to temper my excitement for new prince music, but this week's offerings had promise. i don't think it's any unusually great return to form, but it's music that i could imagine myself playing semi-regularly.

i liked the 'crimson and clover' track, but i hope it's not on the new album. i think his records need to stay far away from including covers. and why does he always have to sneak bits of other songs in when he performs a cover? does it get him out of paying as much royalties to the original songwriters or something? i dunno, just grasping at straws here. lol

all in all, it was a pleasant surprise. the tracks weren't earth-shattering, but that's just fine cuz in my opinion, they didn't suck either.

This is my theory.

Joni Mitchell would meld songs together sometimes on record wouldnt she? I am not an expert on her entire catalouge but i recall hearing her include little snippets of other tracks (what was that righteous Bros track she used?). I thought that this may have been an influence on Prince. Infact, the earliest example of prince incorporating another persons song into his own that i know of was the ballad of dorothy parker (in which he uses lines and melody form joni's song 'help me').

additionally, i imagine alot of these tracks being worked on via extensive jamming sessions, And, Prince has often mixed up and interchanged lyrics of various songs in such settings.

who knows?!

This is the guy who as one of the first released his music via the internet,

Bullshit. He was still running a lame ass 1-800 phone while Amazon was rakign in the money and changing the game. George Michael was aeons ahead of Prince -- George fucking Michael, ferchrissakes. The first version of the NPGMC was a disaster, the second one failed to deliver the minimum of what they promised, the third employed DRM while plenty of outlets were already selling DRM-free music. Prince has NEVER done anything that wasn't the kind of move a major record label would do.

Again: stunt not business model. And nobody would have bought those CDs anyway. Betcha plenty of them are now landfill.

ZERO innovation. ZERO. Giving away stuff for free with newspapers is OLD.

Well, what counts are the extra copies they sold !!

Last weekend, diminutive, purple-loving rock star Prince upset music industry executives and retailers alike by deciding to give away copies of his upcoming CD, Planet Earth, via the Mail on Sunday in the UK. The results are in, and it appears that the giveaway was a big success for the newspaper. At the same time, it demonstrates the degree to which the album is becoming irrelevant to the record labels.

The Mail reported sales of at least 2.8 million papers last Sunday, compared to the June's Sunday average of 2.276 million, according to figures obtained by the Guardian

http://arstechnica.com/ne...offin.html

And: In an article about Stephen Miron:

He is best known as the Associated executive behind last year's Mail on Sunday giveaway of Prince's new album, Planet Earth, which was hailed as the most successful promotion in the paper's 25-year history.

The giveaway, which fuelled an extra 600,000 sales to more than 2.8 million copies in July last year, prompted global media coverage, and anger from some music retailers, even prompting a Disney executive to describe Miron as "the most feared man in the world of content".

Miron's Prince giveaway produced the second highest sale in the paper's 25-year history, surpassed only by its September 7 1997 issue - the day after the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales.

Even though Bart has a very....ummmm "harsh" way of putting things, I have to agree. These songs are very mediocre and extremely under-whelming, and I honestly dont see how anyone can think any differently. These are by-the-numbers, written in my sleep songs. And please don't say my opinions are based on my want of another Purple Rain or some other album, because thats the last thing I want. I just want an album where it seems like Prince actually tried to make a good album. I want good lyrics (Colonised Mind? UPLOAD!!! DOWNLOAD!!! LOL!!), not those that sound like a 10 year old in love with his class partner wrote. I want good music that sounds inspired, with actual MELODIES!! This is becoming ridiculous. Oh well, I guess I'll go back to listening to Steven Wilson. (Now there is a musical genius who still gets it!)

I also agree.

I think we have a few things going on. As usual you have polarization of Prince opinions on music.

What scares me most about the few pages since yesterday was insults towards Bart. Listen he has an opinion, I was pleasantly surprised by the songs except Crimson, but I don't fool myself into thinking this is envelope pushing stuff.

The samples are not a new direction in anyway. You may like the songs, but I don't think anyone can argue this is totally diff from anything he has done.

Look people like Bart and myself are very critical of Prince. I own hundreds of his cd's, spent yrs studying the outtakes, reading uptown/vault etc. I just think that we should be able to criticize him without people getting nasty.

Look I still test the water with Prince, I don't jump in anymore, cause I have gotten burnt pretty bad.

And I am not an old guy 31, but I remember 1-800-funk and crystal ball ordering fiaso's, so I think his business model has not always been so great.

Bottom line folks, we have new prince MUSIC. Not a new wife, religion, hairdo, outfit and it's being discussed in the prince music section. Now that is a holiday surprise, cause I would guess 50% of the topics have nothing to do with his music in this section.

Criticize the folks that ask what would you cook Prince, what would you do while making out with him etc, not the guy he gives hard evidence to why HE doesn't eat everthing Prince and love it.

Happy Holidays,
Music is the best...

Everyone has different aesthetics and taste. Your opinions don't reflect everyone elses. And the songs well reception by the majority here and on HQ are testimony to that. Agree with sentiment! I had to reply because I don't see SW being named dropped around here. PT Rules!
Anyway, I don't think the new P is bad nor do I think it's astounding or ground breaking. But it is enjoyable. Don't put too much into it and you just may like it.
I will say I'm not crazy about Never Be Another like Me. Funny because I love the instrumental version. Maybe it should've been just that.
Try this. Seqeunce the songs as an ep.
Wall Of Berlin
4Ever
Colonized Mind
Crimson and Clover
TWNBALM
F.U.N.K (add it. it flows nicely with TWNBALM)
TWNBALM (instrumental version).
It's like you have side A (rock) and a side B (funk) to a new little P album.
Fantasy is reality in the world today. But I'll keep hangin in there, that is the only way.

So how come Prince is searching for ways to sell his music without using record labels? Isn't this a question that has been answered? Isn't it a question Prince himself answers with NPG Music Club etc? What's left to figure out at this stage?

Looking forward to a new album though.

I does SEEM like something Prince would do though doesn't it? Just give you a taste and then make you wait. Some people must have been able to record the show. Not me. This is the deal.
Whenever Prince comes out with a new song/CD every wannabe music critic and musician will come on here and talk about how good/bad the thing is and all Hell breaks loose.

Damn let the shit come out and then we will fuss about it. This was some unmastered shit previewed on a indie radio program not the finished product.
But then again Prince could bring you the new CD with a bow and you all would bitch about it only had 15 songs instead of 20.
