Crimson & Clover is a really well done, guitar heavy cover. The other 2 I still haven't made my mind up on though. Forever should have been given to a Christian pop act. Not a terrible piece of pop but hardly anything you'd hope to find on a good Prince album. A few serviceable Prince guitar lines but nothing to get excited about. Terrible, cheesy chorus.
Colonized Mind More moronic lyrics. Bland, and I don't mean Michael, tempo. Sounds like a cousin to his version of When Will We Be Paid. Decent guitar that might work better in a live environment where he could drop the lyrics and solo away. In other words, 90% of the song is disposable. Crimson and Clover. Probably the best of the lot. Too bad it's not his song. Ultimately a decent cover with a good solo. Would be a passable b-side. He must really be out of ideas if he's got to rely on covers for new material. Wall of Berlin I've said in the past I think the reason Prince has never made a rock album is because I don't think he knows how. This song is further proof of that theory. Might be better live where the lyrics and restricted studio sound would be dumped and the amps turned up. Like Colonized Mind, 90% of the song is disposable. No hard feelings. | |

Knowing how Prince values my opinion I gotta give it to him straight...
THIS IS SOME GOOD STUFF! I'm diggin' all of the tracks but Colonized Mind is lyricallly and sonically brilliant! It's one of those songs that represents what I love most about Prince's unique style of artistic expression. Well done Mr. Nelson...well done indeed. We heard a preview cover of Crimson and Clover at the NY show. His style of rendition is better than the original. Love the guitar and love his vocals.
I believe he did Colonized mind at the NY show. It rocks! Bob Dylan? Wall of Berlin..? What's his fascination with this wall? The song is good tho. 4ever. Love that track..

Ok, I've changed my mind a little about 4ever... it's growing on me. Quite a lot. Builds beautifully and has tonnes of minute Princely nurdlings in the mix that make you smile.
That Crimson and Clover cover still should only be a live thing... it's pointless him having a vault of music if he's going to release other people's work. So pointless, in fact, he should dump it... I've got some spare room on my cellar if he's looking for a space. Both Wall of Berlin and Colonized Mind are becoming goodly favourites. Colonized Mind, especially, is nicely clever, without alienating, and is definitely going into one of my lesson plans for next year! | |
