Prince and MJ exploiting their feminine sides - why? This is an odd question that's coming to mind:
Do both Prince and MJ exploit their feminine side because they think guys are more willing to listen to them then (as opposed to doing it to get women's attention by looking like them, so they'll feel more comfortable, etc...?) Prince has said (Chris Rock interview) that he did some things because it was the in thing at the time (androgyny). So it makes sense that he would exploit his feminine side for this reason. But this is a new thought in my brain, and I'm willing to be right or wrong. Thoughts? Have you ever done something because you thought it would get your own sex to listen to you more or take you more seriously?

Yep. I stopped initiating mindless threads here at the Org about MJ and Prince "exploiting their feminine sides." Worked like a charm. I highly recommend it.

I don't think either of them purposely act "womanish" (for lack of a better term) to appease anyone, I just think that is who they are. And honestly I dont see anything wrong with that. It really shows an artistic side to them and its very intreeging. I've always been attracted to feminine type men...ever since i was a teenager. Prince wouldnt be Prince if he was all macho and barbarious. It's "artsy" to me....dramatic....fun. And just cause your slightly feminine doesnt mean you are gay...even though a lot of people I talk to about Prince say to me that he is. They are delusioned.
I love the fact that MJ and Prince are just being themselves.

androgyny and sexual ambiguity had been used to great effect in popular music long before Prince and MJ started doing so.

I have added more masculine traits (thought) to attract my man. I had to learn he listens to my thoughts. I saw Prince cry
and I asked God why The answer He gave caused me 2 b saved Now I cannot tell a lie

I dont know about MJ; but prince is a little bit androgyness and thats what helped set him apart from others especially being that and african american male; must have been hard at the time.

Prince played with it as way to 'come out' without having to really come out.
Michael covered it up as best he could by trying to be the leader of a dancing street gang smothered in soul-glo hairgel and mac makeup as a way to 'keep it in the closet'. Either way, I think on Prince saught to exploit any aspect of his feminine nature. He probably understood he wasn't fooling anybody with his high heels and wavy permed hair, and instead of fighting it, he went artsy-fartsy with it. In the end, he was able to make it 'sexy' whereas MJ's attempts to cover it up just made him come off as 'creepy'.

All women and men have both masculine and feminine sides. P is definately in touch with both and not afraid to show it. like most men. I dont think he "exploits" it just cause he one of the few who openly show it.
MJ is a nut case, cant figure him out. He more like a Man /Child. There is a vulnerability to both, shy quality that people take as feminine traits. Its a matter of opinion depending on how you view it. Prince is all man to me, you can see that in his interviews. Very strong confident. Now, A man that can show his emotions and connect with a womens emotions at the same time is a man I can respect!!!

Why not, is the real question.
Too many people live in fear of what would happen if they stepped outside the societally-approved gender binary system. Say what you want about Prince's or Michael's behaviour, but it takes balls to stand up in public and defy a system that society holds sacrosanct. It'd be admirable as hell in anyone, but someone who lives under the lens of public scrutiny has just that much more to risk by doing so. [Edited 9/14/08 22:27pm] "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

Okay...lemme school ya a bit - when I wrote this thread, I was anything BUT mindless. In other words, this is a genuine inquiry. Can you formulate a response based on my thoughts being based on something?

It didn't occur to me until after I'd hit reply what a gender-loaded phrase "it takes balls" really is. Hell, maybe what it takes is some serious ovaries to make the decision to live outside your prescribed gender role. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

I think prince has exploited everything about himself to succeed and be noticed - drawing from very successful acts and hardly any of what you see is real, its all costumes and an act from the very beginning. He is a show man. or as he said, partyman! Im not sure what is feminine about him, are you referring to his clothes? or hair? do you think he looks feminine? I dont. He is petite which I guess may make people think he is feminine, oh and he wears heels but then so did a lot of 70s acts and before that even and so do cowboys admittedly not quite so high, but then he is quite small. Michael Jackson sounds feminine because his voice is so high, but I dont think he looks feminine, he doesnt act effeminate either. he just looks wierd. What do you think is MJs feminine side? Prince has quite a deep voice too and doesnt act effeminate either. I think this question of two sides etc is unreal and media hype from the early days because he wore suspenders etc. But back in the 80s alot of acts were doing that, androgeny was a big thing. Plus the lace and underwear thing was all the rage. Yes bowie was one of the first to create the androgeny look, the make up and was known for being bisexual. But again that was an act (the makeup bit not the bisexual bit), he created a persona for an album. Just like Prince has done each and every time, re-invented himself. Much like Madonna. Most of what you see in 'acts' is just that - an act. Sometimes people refer to princes lyrics as a source for suggesting he is in touch with his feminine side, but I disagree with that too. I think he is a well rounded individual and actually comes across to me as a strong male not afraid to express his thoughts. Is that an exclusively feminine trait to understand women? I dont think so. The song if i was ur girlfriend seems to be the most commenly quoted reference to a feminine side, but i think it is misunderstood. It is a strong male who loves a woman that much. The whole camille thing was a saga, a story and therefore probably an act. Its all an illusion, just like the film purple rain was.
