Yep. I stopped initiating mindless threads here at the Org about MJ and Prince "exploiting their feminine sides."

Worked like a charm.

I highly recommend it. nod

They both made $$$$$'s
Could it perhaps be the same formula that Marilyn Monroe also "exploited"?
Oh yeah, why you got a nose in the middle of ya face?

I don't think either of them purposely act "womanish" (for lack of a better term) to appease anyone, I just think that is who they are. And honestly I dont see anything wrong with that. It really shows an artistic side to them and its very intreeging. I've always been attracted to feminine type men...ever since i was a teenager. Prince wouldnt be Prince if he was all macho and barbarious. It's "artsy" to me....dramatic....fun. And just cause your slightly feminine doesnt mean you are gay...even though a lot of people I talk to about Prince say to me that he is. They are delusioned.

I love the fact that MJ and Prince are just being themselves. smile

Nicely said. Totally agree.
"When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really donĀ“t like the idea that he could have it all."

This is an odd question that's coming to mind:

Do both Prince and MJ exploit their feminine side because they think guys are more willing to listen to them then (as opposed to doing it to get women's attention by looking like them, so they'll feel more comfortable, etc...?)

Prince has said (Chris Rock interview) that he did some things because it was the in thing at the time (androgyny). So it makes sense that he would exploit his feminine side for this reason.

But this is a new thought in my brain, and I'm willing to be right or wrong.

Thoughts? Have you ever done something because you thought it would get your own sex to listen to you more or take you more seriously?

I can say in the past b4 I became a fan I thought P was homosexual and my friends and immediate family would "trip" on P's "gayness". Once I became a fan I found my point of view changed and I accepted the fact that there r some men and women out there that "fit the mold" of being androgynous ...

androgeny is rock and roll, and also human, little richards behavior was more womanly and gay than his level of androgeny-he acted a certain way to give clue to his sexual preferance in a repressed 50's. prince broadened the discussion because he is very masculine yet keenly aware of his vulnerability (lyrically) and androgeny. He made lemonade out of what society (and probably many kids in Mlps) told him were lemons, he said fuck you to natural selection ideals and made it do what it do. Historically he came along at the right time, benefited and "could" be marketed as a sex symbol.Today his height and look would immediatly be mocked in this put down, negativity driven media. Also he has always (in his look and appeal to women) challenged cultural ideas about gender and what "is" a sexy black man. Without prince i dont score in high school ( 5'4 soft features long hair) and i certainly dont have the confidence to put down the eyeliner long enough to be a boxer and football player. So whatever these two guys did it resonated and stretched the boundries of male female attraction rules. Hell yeah he exploited it, and good for him, had he not we may not even know him.The Why of the matter is plain, it took him to another level, a level that makes it impossible to label him "black" "R&B" or "Funk", it made him Rock and Roll which is a larger audience that aint trend driven. Notice how Rock and Roll icons stay relevant longer, play bigger venues, charge more and maintain more loyalty than Black R&B acts of that time period. Prince may be funky and he may love James Brown but he wanted to be Mick Jagger for the above stated reasons, and Mick wore lipstick.

Prince played with it as way to 'come out' without having to really come out.

Michael covered it up as best he could by trying to be the leader of a dancing street gang smothered in soul-glo hairgel and mac makeup as a way to 'keep it in the closet'.

Either way, I think on Prince saught to exploit any aspect of his feminine nature. He probably understood he wasn't fooling anybody with his high heels and wavy permed hair, and instead of fighting it, he went artsy-fartsy with it. In the end, he was able to make it 'sexy' whereas MJ's attempts to cover it up just made him come off as 'creepy'.

lol thats the answer to this thread.
however prince perposing the illusion of possibly being and actually not being gay..
The energy in this field's been known to flicker lights, aight

Asong with no name, acapella moans and a bridge of silence

Undeterred nevertheless a masterpiece on butterscotch thighs

Turn off the lights, turn off the lights

It's time for Mr Go
