TRC might be my favourite Prince album, am I mad?

Right now I'm so happy about the direction Prince is going in after TRC I have to honestly say this disc is the one that spends most time in my CD player. I've always loved funk music and I love jazz music too and appreciate the playing on this album.

Is anyone else feeling me?

I love real instruments and I'm never happier than when Prince leaves all the electronics alone and just plays, along with a damn good band.

I do love SOTT in particular, and so much of Prince's work, but right now I really love TRC. The older stuff will always be brilliant to me but this is 2002 and right now TRC just seems to fit my mood and feeling better. I can't get inside the heads of people who don't like TRC because of its music.

If people don't like the religious side to it I can kinda understand. But musically this is the album I had been hoping for quite a while that Prince would make.

Who else had this wish? There must be some of u.

Who's feeling me? TRC is amazing and I absolutely love it!!!

I understand what U mean. TRC has a real focus and structure to it. It seems really raw compared to other albums, you can feel th instruments and there is some very creative music on the album. Check-Digital Garden, check-Sensual Everafter, check-Family Name. An all round strong album, hopefully P can better TRC next time round. Let's hope so...

I'd never like Prince to stand still. A progression upon TRC in the same vain, for me, would be brilliant.

I agree with you.
The ONA concert spoiled me so that "empty music" from the
radio is no longer satifying.
I'm not saying there are no other great bands. I'm saying I
only want to hear great music, now.
So...how's everybody doing? smile

First, you're NOT mad! The Rainbow Children is an amazing album, plain and simple.

I would say that it is one of my favorites, but not the favorite. It ranks up there with SOTT, PR, and 1999.

I'm very excited about this new direction that Prince is taking, too!!

If this is the music that Prince wants to make, then I'm happy for him and all the people that dig it too ( me included ). Everybody else can go and take a running jump for all I care lol

Hey, I said this with the understanding that favourite albums can change. I love SOTT and many other Prince albums but something frsh always has the advantage and maybe once TRC is a few years old it'll settle down around 4th on my favourite Prince album list. I'm just saying right now I'm loving it!!!

It's fucking amazing.

You aren't mad at all! The Rainbow Children is one of his best albums, surely it's the most mature one he made until now. I'm very satisfied about the direction Prince has taken - his music is getting very complex again and listening to it is adventure and discovery at the same time! ONE of my favourites nod

Sure.

Electronics has its place in music, but at this point Prince took the better route to a more organic outing. John Blackwell is a godsend. Point blank. People may not like his drumming, but if they say he's not a good drummer they don't know drums.

I do love SOTT in particular, and so much of Prince's work, but right now I really love TRC. I have a hunch as to the whys when it comes to most people who dislike it. No matter. Prince isn't going to please all of his most hardcore fans at the same time.

The bottom line for me is that it's been YEARS since Prince has played with this much focus and passion. And that's really all I wanted to hear out of Prince after years of punching the clock: passion, conviction. If people can't at least hear that in the album, then...yeah, I have my hunches as to why. And then there are the people who hate the narration voice. That's understandable. But I haven't listened to anything from the album in at least a few weeks, only because I sort of wore it out by the time Spring got here this year. I wanted to hear Prince exhibit some sense of purpose and I got it.

Lotsa Rhodes, great drums, excellent geetar, some screaming thrown in, and sublime production. Nice recipe.
This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

Can someone please explain how they can rate TRC highly? I mean all that religious dogma and gibberish..its a slap in the face to women and to those who arent brainwashed into believing interpretations of a book that is written as a fantasy. And then there is that damn drone of a voice ruining everything., Trying to be Bob George but just simply getting in the way of the songs and interfering. And this jazz light stuff..please! This is not what I come to expect from Prince..he can do much better. Those ballads with no emotion...pfft. The religious chant chorus' of supposed rave ups..damn. How in the hell (pun intended) did he come up with this and decide this was worthy of release? Other artists would get laughed outta town doing something as daft as this. Wedding feast? Hello..this isnt a place to tack on "out there" segues that make no sense. Stop putting silly useless dribble on releases..thats insulting..the liberal use of rhodes, geetar, drums and other instruments have NO inspiration either. This is a release with no focus, no inspiration, but plenty of silly beliefs to be pushed on an ever dwindling audience that deserves much better.

Think I've been to too many concerts to like any of his CDs and never really liked any of them since D&P (with few exceptions). Its like pooring milk powder over my cornflakes. And the lyrics take away some of the fun too.

Mostly listen to Booties. Prince live. Thats what its all about. Right now Nude Tour Tokyo 1990 is filling the room, my heart, me legs, my ...

Nah you're not mad, TRC is one of my favourites too. Christian / JW dogma aside, from the first moment I heard the album it sounded like Prince was really stretching himself for the first time in ages to make something special.

That said, my other fave Prince albums are Lovesexy and Emancipation so I might just have crap taste biggrin

I fucking love TRC, especially after hearing Family Name live in concert in London a few weeks ago...

I really think TRC is the first time, in a very long time, that Prince made an lp for himself. He was trying to prove something with those last bunch of albums (newpowersoul, Rave, even Emancipation). I think he finally gave up the idea of proving to the world that he is still a great artist. I love Rainbow Children. I can't tell you how many people i know who are shocked to find out that it's Prince coming from my stereo when I'm playing that CD. I think TRC is absolutely one of his best recordings...so no, i don't think you are mad...you just have good taste!

1) TRC is eccentric Prince- in the way that his eccentricities made LOVESEXY and PARADE so uniquely Prince

2) Even he must have realized that another cd of horny or romantic or bragging lyrics would have no impact anymore

3) TRC, followed by a live album is the best back-to-back idea since PARADE-SIGN.

I like both Lovesexy and Emancipation,

In fact i think Emancipation was his best since Lovesexy.

A year later we got The Truth (fuckin' marvellous album) but then it all went arse again.

Yes! I am not alone. I agree with nearly all of the positive comments here, though that's hardly surprising considering the thread title. But anyway, I just feel like the album has focus, like it's been said here, and he has that passion back. I'm not really bothered WHAT he's talking about, just so long as he has SOMEthing to say. If being a JW gives him that, so be it.

I don't believe in God but nearly all my favourite artists found inspiration in their faith: Stevie, Marvin, Curtis etc.

There's something about that inspiration. It's what music is about.

I alternate so much. The first time I heard it I sorta liked it, then the lyrics sunk in and I couln't stand it, and then I went to the concerts and heard how fucking awesome the songs were live-- Family Name for sure! --and came home and listened again and thought it was sooo beautiful and artistically stunning. . .but now I never listen to it. Huh.

Um, well in some peoples' defence I think it would be more than possible to not like these albums but appreciate the music of Otis Redding or Al Green and like soul music. But I get what u're saying.
