Personally, I can't hear PR in this song.
But I read somewhere he stole it from Bob Seger.

well, same thing goes on in art... everything is influenced by everything else...unless one admits to stealing from another...

This was talked about on Howard Stern a few months back. Apparently it was accidental, he paid Journey some money, and everyone was happy.

I personally do not hear a resemblance as well, but I do remember reading an article that Prince sent Journey a letter of apology. I did not hear, however, that he payed Journey any money. I will try to find that article.

Oh please.. I have both songs, they arent even close? eek .. and I have Sirius Radio, Howard didnt bring that up. I heard ALL the talk about Led Zeppelin stealing songs. They brought up a bunch of other artist, Prince wasnt one of them! I listen to the show everyday and they replay every episode everyday all day.

Lie.

Jeez, people are sensitive about this. It was indeed talked about on the Stern show, and I'm not the only person who heard it. Check out Reply #13 from blackguitaristz in here: http://prince.org/msg/8/262793

The chord progression in "Purple Rain" sounds identical to "Faithfully",by Journey. For all you musicians out there,go take a listen.Even the guitar solo is the same. It's just in a different key.

I point this out because of all of the people who are saying that Alicia Keys copied "Purple Rain".

THEY ALL DO IT!!

Have you heard of a 10 year old singer/musician named Gabi Wilson? google her name. She is being compared to Prince and Alicia.

-----
I just do not hear it. If you wanted to say he was influenced by Journey I can understand but the songs just do not sound alike. Alicia has ripped off everyone from the minute she came out.

Rumor has it it was accidental to the point that someone noted the similarity of the guitar solo to Prince he agreed even though he wasn't trying to copy it.He called Journey up to apologize and offered them money for it. They being the great musicians they were told him they were honored but they knew it was just a coincidence. BTW Journey is my favorite rock group and I love Faithfully. Steve Perry's voice could make me melt.

The influence is definitely there. Others have brought it up before... listen to the whoa..oah... part...

Listen to 2:45 onwards:

It's not an outright ripoff, but you can't deny the influence.

even the drum fills sound similar...

The similarity really comes towards the end of the song.

You can't really hear any resemblance until the end of the song... but I think "stole" is a bit strong... the Cocteau Twins have the same chord progression in one of their songs, and I don't think they did it intentionally either...
Change it one more time..

I wouldn't use the word "stole" either... but it's more than just the chord progression... Prince uses "woo hoo hoo hoo"... journey uses whoa... oah... drums are also similar...

Now that you mention it, and when I listen to the song in my head, I can hear the similarity towards the end of Purple Rain. It's the guitar solo.

The main chord progression is the same but the melody is very different. Look at 50's rock and roll, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, etc...., mostly all of their songs have the same three chord progression as does lots of rock music. A chord progression can't really be stolen, it's almost always the melody of a song that is looked at when copyright infringment is brought up. Because "Faithfully" came out in '83, and P most likely wrote "Purple Rain" in early '83, there is no doubt that he borrowed the chord progression for his song. But I would bet that same chord progression can be found in various gosphel records that had been around years before either of those two songs ever were written.

U don't have to take Stern seriously. It's not about Howard Stern. It's about how P definately bit off of Journey's cut. One of the first threads I ever wrote on here was about this. I could hear this the first time I heard the song Purple Rain. Cuz I loved the shit out of "Faithfully". U gotta be stone deaf not to hear it. P's guitar solo is straight up Neal Schon. Which isn't surprising being P always dug Neal's playing ever since Neal was with Santana.

Damn, that's pathetic. This sucks...

Prince stole the song and modified it. He played his own version of Schon's guitar solo! Damn. They even play one exact note that's in Prince's Purple Rain. The instrumental part before Prince sings "Oooh" in Purple Rain is in there.

Wow. This is a travesty. Damn...

I knew he was influenced by Jimi with the Little Miss Lover sample but damn. What a ripoff. All these years I thought the song was completely original...
