It really was. Probably the best Superbowl halftime show performance ever. I almost cried when he was singing "Purple Rain" lol, it was touching to me for some reason. I remember my whole family got up and clapped at the end of the performance which suprised the hell out of me because they're not Prince fans at all, but he really did the damn thing that night! It's gonna be hard for anyone to even come close to outdoing that performance.

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

I will definitely watch the superbowl game because I love football. I'm expecting New England to beat the crap out of the Giants. boxed I'll watch the halftime show too because I like Tom Petty and I'm on a diet so the food line is a no-no.

Sadly, my beloved Steelers are not playing. bawl

Last year was the first time in 30 years that I missed a game. I only saw about 10 minutes of it because I volunteered to dance in the halftime show. The game was on a big screen in the staging area but none of us had time to watch. Over 2000 of us had to be checked in, get security armbands, fill out more forms, eat lunch, and get into position for which bus we were going to be assigned to. Every minute of our time was organized to the last detail. I had recruited 14 of my friends, coworkers and their family members to volunteer. Initially I wasn't going to participate but one of them dropped out and the others talked me into it. It didn't take much persuading. lol I was afraid I'd be the oldest one out there but there were lots of people way older, in their fifties and even 2 ladies older than that eek

The rehearsals were fun and tiring. The first week was spent practicing how fast we could get on and off the field because we had to stay out of the way of the stage crew, who had less than 6 minutes to put the whole symbol stage together on the field and take it apart the same way. It was hectic even in dry weather.

The last day was dress rehearsal with Prince. After the equipment, the band and all of us were in position, Prince was driven onto the field in a golf cart. He was wearing the orange suit with the silver coin trim and he stayed out there with us all afternoon and evening getting every detail right and looking beautiful as usual. He tried so hard to look cool but he was as excited as we were. He looked like a 5 year old let loose in a candy store, LOL!

We ran through the entire show, music, effects and everything 3 times. Each time was more magical than the previous time. The band was tight, FAMU was brilliant and Prince outdid himself as though the stadium was full of people. We knew this show was gonna be HOT!

Speaking of hot, the scariest thing was when they were showing Prince how the stage worked. The first time those flames shot up from the stage they were huge and we could feel the heat where we were standing. I was terrified that they would barbeque poor Prince but he wasn't fazed at all! It's a shame that the rain made it so smoky on television, but the purple speckled raindrops made an even more magical effect. Each time I stayed in position only until the music started, then of course I ran up close to the stage. The other scary thing was at the end of the last rehearsal when they were lowering Prince back down and the mic tipped over and smacked him hard in the mouth. His expression was priceless but he recovered quickly.

The funniest thing was watching the reactions of people who didn't know much about Prince. One girl about 16, was so blown away by his guitar solo that she literally forgot she was supposed to be dancing and just stood there with her hands at her mouth, which was hanging open, lol

We were standing close to where they drove him on and off the field. The first time they brought him out my co-worker Rose, yelled, "Prince, you're beautiful!". He smiled and waved. The poor girl grabbed me and screamed in my ear, "HE SMILED AT MEEEE!' then she dragged me to the ground with her. . disbelief When I got up, her 19 year old niece screamed in my other ear, "HE'S SOOO PREEEETY!" and started shaking me. By the time he left the field for the last time, kids were screaming and chasing that golf cart.

So anyway, on game day we were being assigned our positions in the staging area, which was a gymnasium on a college campus several miles away from the stadium and waiting to be bused in at halftime. My crew was assigned a place at the top of the bleachers and the stairs were steeper than Mount Everest.

Yes folks, I fell on the stairs and hurt my knee. Three weeks later, when my insurance finally approved an MRI I found out I had fractured it!

At the time I thought it was just a sprain so I rubbed it and flexed it over and over till the bus came for us. I limped onto the bus and my friends prayed over the knee all the way to the stadium. There were 60 busloads of us and we had a police escort all along the expressway. It felt like the Presidential motorcade. cool Onlookers in passing cars nearly ran into each other.

By the time we got to the stadium it was pouring rain and my knee was nearly frozen. I had decided not to risk running on wet grass and was told by the organizer that I could remain on the bus. Everyone else was given a rain parka and ran towards the field. 10 minutes later the driver told me I have to get out because he has to go to his station. I hobbled off the bus and asked another organizer where I could wait. He asked another bus driver if I could sit on his bus and he said no. By now I was soaked to the skin because the guy with the parkas was long gone and I was told to wait in a tent that was set up near the entrance to the field, so I started limping towards it.

About halfway there, some guy appears out of nowehere. He's walking beside me telling me some half baked story about needing my security bracelet to get inside because his son is in the stadium gettng wet. I refused to give him my bracelet because I can't get back on the bus to the college without it. He keeps pestering me.

That's when I started crying. disbelief why? because if the guy decides to tackle me and take my bracelet I can't kick him or run away on my bum leg. Thank God a limo driver at the tent saw what was happening and made the guy leave me alone. He helped me to the tent and kept saying, "don't cry miss". A couple of other guys under the tent found me a seat and gave me a soda. Bless their hearts.

Then the music started, and for a few moments I forgot that I was wet and in pain. I hobbled closer and watched the whole show from the sidelines knowing exactly how Donavan McNabb must have felt when he led the Eagles to the big game but didn't play. In spite of everything I was overwhelmed with emotions because I was sooo proud of Prince that night and also proud of my crew of volunteers. I'll never forget it and I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

On a sad note, one of our crew members, Melinda Rodriguez who had driven down from Winter Haven Fla. was killed driving back home after rehearsal the Wednesday before the game. I only met her once but other FlaNPG members knew her quite well. It was very sad...RIP Melinda.

Sorry for the long post. This is the first time I've been able to share to whole story without feeling overwhelmed. To this day I can't watch my recording of the event without tearing up because so many things happened that week.

Thanks for bearing with me.
Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

Hey Babynoz, it was great reading your thread. I was apart of the stage crew and that experience was one of the best in my life. The rehearsal show was just magical. It was just us and Prince and his crew in this big old empty stadium. The rehearsal show was just magical. It was just us and Prince and his crew in this big old empty stadium. I will never forget it.

What made the whole experience even more touching is how we were sitting there waiting to go in and the rain was coming down and down and down. The Captain told us that they had a tape ready to play just in case we were washed out and they usually give that warning a few minutes before. But then they gave us the 2 minute warning and we all thought there is NO WAY Prince would come out in that rain and mess up his hair and makeup.

But low and behold, his techs brought his guitar out. Shelby and the band members walked by hyped up, she was the "The show must go on" and boy did it.

When I got back I had so many messages on my cellphone from my friends and

nevermind...I just have to post it! prince biggrin highfive

TOP FIVE BEST SUPER BOWL HALFTIME SHOWS

5. Super Bowl I, Kansas City Chiefs vs. Green Bay Packers -- University of Arizona and University of Michigan Marching Bands
The very first Super Bowl halftime show was quite modest, but trust me, you'd take two marching bands over some of the crap that followed every time. Plus, this is still the only time an organized unit from the Grand Canyon State has ever taken the field at the Big Game.

4. Super Bowl XXV, New York Giants vs. Buffalo Bills -- "A Small World Salute to 25 Years of the Super Bowl" with New Kids On The Block, Disney Characters, Warren Moon, 2,000 Local Children and an Audience Card Stunt
A landmark show, it actually wasn't aired until post-game as a result of Persian Gulf War coverage interrupting halftime. Unfortunately immediately after the show, the 2,000 local children were sent to Iraq. Well, maybe it was their older siblings, but these kids would get a chance of their own to visit the Middle East just a few years later.

3. Super Bowl XXXVIII, New England Patriots vs. Carolina Panthers -- Janet Jackson, Justin Timberlake, Jessica Simpson, Nelly, P. Diddy, Kid Rock
Best known as the moment a naked breast was broadcast into the nation's, nay the world's, living rooms. Armageddon was only narrowly averted thanks to the FCC's subsequent crackdown on broadcasters. What's weird is the way Nipplegate has completely obscured our memory of the remaining performers. Well, that and the fact that they sucked.

2. Super Bowl XXXVI, New England Patriots vs. St. Louis Rams -- U2's Tribute To 9/11 Victims
In a surreal display of America's ethical duality, U2 brought the most macho football fans to tears with a mini-set that was flanked by the names of 9/11 victims. Meanwhile, competing network NBC tried to lure viewers away with Playboy Playmates eating maggots on "Fear Factor." Hey Babynoz, it was great reading your thread. I was apart of the stage crew and that experience was one of the best in my life. The rehearsal show was just magical. It was just us and Prince and his crew in this big old empty stadium. The rehearsal show was just magical. It was just us and Prince and his crew in this big old empty stadium. I will never forget it.

I wouldn't have missed it for the world Sis, because we got to see the show 4 times total and it was awesome every time. I think I was the only FlaNPG member on the dance crew, the rest of you were on the stage crew. You guys started rehearsing a week before us so maybe you met Melinda?

What made the whole experience even more touching is how we were sitting there waiting to go in and the rain was coming down and down and down. The Captain told us that they had a tape ready to play just in case we were washed out and they usually give that warning a few minutes before. But then they gave us the 2 minute warning and we all thought there is NO WAY Prince would come out in that rain and mess up his hair and makeup.

But low and behold, his techs brought his guitar out. Shelby and the band members walked by hyped up, she was the "The show must go on" and boy did it.

Yeah, they told us they would film the 3rd rehearsal to use in case of bad weather, When Prince decided to go on despite the rain I can't tell you how incredibly touched and proud I was! He was such a good sport throughout the whole production. Someone on your crew said that the people pushing his portion of the stage ran him into a wall on the first rehearsal... eek is that true?

When I got back I had so many messages on my cellphone from my friends and

Football is barf but lastyear my eyes were glued to that television like I knew exactly what was going on { which I didn't lol}. This year football is gonna be the last thing on my mind, I have plans for more interesting things! cool

highfive "Prince" was the only interesting part. I never watched the game at all though, just the half-time show. My roommate, who is a BIG fan of football and was watching the game told me when the half-time show was supposed to start. I didn't even know what time or what channel it was on. I just followed her schedule and watch when she called me. lol

The 5 Top Super Bowl Halftime Shows:

http://www.phoenixnewtime...e_wors.php
[Edited 2/2/08 15:31pm]

nevermind...I just have to post it! prince biggrin highfive

Meanwhile, competing network NBC tried to lure viewers away with Playboy Playmates eating maggots on "Fear Factor." Fortunately, most viewers kept their eyes glued to Fox for one of sports broadcasting's most cathartic moments ever.

1. Super Bowl XXLI, Indianapolis Colts vs. Chicago Bears -- Prince

It was the best show! (I don't know 'bout the other years prior) This was the first time I saw him in a few years and the performance was awesome, I still have it recorded on my desktop!

Great article, thanks for posting it!

It's similar to a big hollywood production where they hire lots of extras so there were ads for volunteers...the ads were even posted here and on hq. Team leaders had to recruit as least 10 people to register and we had to sign all sorts of releases and confidentiality agreements because the show content was a big secret.

eek
it must have been a fab experience 2 b part of the rehersals etc! sounded like a military operation!
i'm amazed the stage was built in just a few mins.
sounds like prince really enjoyed himself 2. i suppose it was a big deal, even 4 him.

It was a huge operation and very detailed. I have mad respect for the stage crew. That stage was something like 16 huge pieces that had to be moved and put together in a few minutes.

i imagine he is an excitable person, so it's great u kinda confirmed tht & he must have enjoyed u & ur friends showing him lots of heart

The superbowl is just about as big as it gets in the US. It was downright cute to see how excited Prince was...it took all of his cool just to keep from grinning ear to ear. I wish more folks could see that side of him.

chasing the golf cart...falloff sounds hilarious!

Most of the volunteers were kids under 21 who mostly know hip hop and plastic r&b. Seeing a real master musician in action blew them away! LOL.

sorry 2 hear u also had various traumas.... hope ur knee is fixed now. did u need surgery?
i'm very glad u still managed 2 watch the show.

Thanks. In spite of everything I'd do it all again because two of my favorite things are football and Prince. No surgery thank goodness, but I did have to use a walker and endure two huge injections in my knee...ouch!

Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

My thoughts exactly. This coming from someone who's been a football fan for 1/2 of their life, this is the first and only halftime show i paid attention to AND enjoyed... and was actually looking more forward 2 seeing Prince than the actual game (even if my Colts were playing [AND WON])... I had the highest expectations that he'd put on a spectacular show, and show me what he's really made of.
Cuz this would be my first time seeing just what he can do in the greatest amount time allowed to him (any longer and you'd have a televised concert on HBO, lol).

People will be comparing the shows to Prince's for years to come and I doubt that anyone will be able to do it better. cool
had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone
