he can just sit at a keyboard and rattle off a medley of some of his songs and hold the audience in his palm without blowing them through the back of the arena.

i've seen this happen five times - how does he do it? what is it about him that just transfixes people (me included) in a live performance - just astonishing

That post had NOTHING to do with the Superbowl, which I think was pretty obvious. I was talking about touring acts in general. Prince has consistently put out new music and performed it live.

Besides, halftime acts are supposed to do easily recognizable sing along, audience participation-type songs. It woulda been plain stupid for Prince to get up there and do his favorite cuts from the Black album or Lovesexy. Fans may have loved that but it woulda alienated the audience at home and in the arena.

Doing the Superbowl is strictly a mass-marketing opportunity for any artist. Prince had a product to sell, 3121 Las Vegas, Planet Earth album, shows at the O2, and it made perfect sense for him to get his name and face back out there on the largest stage on Earth. The halftime producers have been asking Prince EVERY year to do the show and he always declined. There's no coincidence in the fact that he kicked off one of his most active years in long time with a Superbowl halftime show which is the most viewed event on the Planet.

have u heard a live version of 3121? if u have, imagine prince kicking off that superbowl with that banging in the arena. (remember that prince had 5 nominations off a number one album the next week at the grammies with black sweat being played b4 he got on the stage)...drool

I completely agree with you about 3121. I initially HATED it on the CD but after hearing it numerous times in Vegas, it grew on me and I realized that the bass on that song is sick as hell and that's some of the funkiest stuff he's done in YEARS! 3121 live is simply genius, my first aftershow ever was on the 24th of August, and he played it twice, next day, fumbling thru that memory bank called my brain, I could still hear the bass, and i thought to myself, what a F***king song.

Unfortunately, it is probably the only show not recorded, opps lurking

and in ur opinion, aren't u basing it solely just because u r a prince fan? if so then it would b a biased opinion not on a music level xperience.

as a prince fan, it was very very subpar with the best part being the sequence of proud mary-best of u
[Edited 2/4/08 10:49am]

Sure my bias plays into it some, but I performed in a couple of Superbowls when I was in high school, I'm a huge sports fan so I always watch the game, and I'm always eager to see the halftime show. Therefore, I'm very familiar with the halftime shows for the last 15 years or so and the feeling of excitement and anticipation this show is SUPPOSED to generate. And IMO all paled in comparison to Prince's. I'm not saying there weren't some good ones, but Prince was more of a complete package instead of being one-dimensional in his perforfance like most other acts.

As I clearly stated in my post (in the part YOU highlighted) I based my opinion on the fun and thrill factor, not even musicianship cuz that's not really a big deal in the halftime show, but with Prince it was a bonus. All I'm saying is that comparing his performance to other halftime shows, NOT other Prince shows, it was the best all-around performance for a halftime show with the broadest appeal. You may think it was subpar, that's fine, you're entitled to your opinion as I am to mine.

His show appealed across racial, generational, and musical genre lines unlike any other performer they've ever had. There was something for Prince fans young and old, rock fans young and old, fans of rock, pop, blues and r&b. Tom Petty didn't do that, and U2 as great a show it was under special circumstances didn't do that. And IDEALLY appealling to a broad audience of football fans IS the goal of the Superbowl halftime show.

i watched the Prince superbowl today - it was a 12 minute spectacular and the look on Prince's face when he sang the line "I'm no fool" was priceless - having just played to a huge world audience he looked likie the cat had just got the cream - hats off to him

i remember being xcited about no doubt per4ming at the halftime and it was ruined by sting lol ..

I remember that hot ass mess. For awhile there the producers of the halftime show went with a more is better approach but it turned out that more is just more not necessarily better. If anything good came out of the Janet/Justin debacle was the scaling back of the production. However, the producers overreacted and gave us the Stones and McCartney which were both geriatric snooze fests.

But I think they are moving in the right direction with Prince and Tom Petty. Single acts with a following with command of the stage. I'd love to see Springsteen. He's another one with a great back catalog and lots of good new music that is renowned for his live performances.

I know this is probably abit off topic, but there is some great debate going on about live performances. To those of you that have not seen U2 live, next time they are in location near to you, make sure to get a ticket, they will blow you mind. I first saw U2 in 87, it was the last show of the Joshua Tree tour, and it was in my hometown, Cork. At the time I was totally anti-U2, basically coz everyone was into them, there would be major arguements and discussions about Joshua Tree Versus SOTT. This even prompted one of P´s most famous quote´s after the grammy awards, where U2 had just taken the award for best album, P´s reply was to say, "OK, I can do that, but U2 cant do the Housequake" . In 95 P put U2 lead singer Bono to the test, at an aftershow in Dublin, they sang The Cross together, which of course was the song which P had made reference to back at the grammy awards. I have heard the version they did, Bono kept forgetting the lyrics lol

Anyway, in 87, after the dissappointment of SOTT london show´s being cancelled, I went to the U2 concert, I was expecting it to be similiar to basically listening to U2´s music on a loud stereo, but boy was I wrong, from the moment they came on stage, it was a total party, one of the best show´s I was ever at. I have since seen them two more times, 2001 & 2005, both in Vienna. Again, I have never witnessed any band that can get an audience into such a frenzy. I have seen alot of concerts in Vienna, including Springsteen and The Stones, and an Austrian audience is very difficult to get on their feet, but both times U2 had the place jumping from start to finish. The 2005 concert was extra special, as it was on the same day that Live 8 was done, and the show started late, as U2 had to fly in from London.

If I was to look at it from a neutral perspective, U2 are probably the best live act in the world, they sure know how to get people into a complete frenzy. BTW, U2 3D is probably at a cinema near you, from what I have heard, it is almost as good as the real thing wink

my apologies for Hi-jacking the thread lol

i think U2 is on at O2 later this year

If U2 show up at the O2, then P will have some serious competition on his hands, I have seen U2 in an arena, and they almost burnt the place down. U2 at the O2 would be sensational, christ, I better start saving wink
If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

I KNOW, right? lol Springsteen would be a natural for the Superbowl but I don't think he's ever done it. I have the recent issue of Rolling Stone with him on the cover and he's such an intelligent man. I've always been very impressed with him. I saw his concert on HBO, I think, a few years ago and he's STILL hot and lively on stage. They better snap him up quick!

No, it was definitely during the Grammies, which was a week later, I think. Yeah, that was nice and then he immediately embarked on his 'cease & desist' campaign. confused

OK, I stand corrected.

isn't that what prince is doing as well as evident by that setlist during the superbowl? whofarted

If you are going to go by Prince and his setlist then what about Tom Petty's last night? That setlist was made up of familiar tunes of his from the 70's & 80's. It's all about familiarity and getting the crowd going with what they know. That's a Superbowl halftime show for you.

here's the difference..the majority of us are not keen 2 tom petty's catalogue as compared 2 prince's. so thus we're very biased about prince's music and per4mance than someone like tom petty. I wasn't xpecting anything from tom petty other than him per4ming something like "don't come around here anymore" or "refugees" (both of my favorites btw), so i just sat back and enjoyed the music. now i'm sure they're might b die hard petty fans that would feel the same as diehard prince fans that wanted him 2 go out of the stratosphere or safe box and bring the ruckus.

and prince could have done that same thing but he played it safe..hardly the man we've all known 2 do. perfect xample, the SNL per4mance..u were probably thinking he would have done black sweat considering the single and video had been released around that time of the per4mance, but he did the opposite by doing fury. same thing as doing electric chair back in 89. do the oppositie of what's xpected. where has that prince gone?
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

I still think he shoulda done Black Sweat and it strikes me as odd that with all the live tv performances he did in 06 and 07 he NEVER performed Black Sweat. Isn't that what you're supposed to do when you're promoting your most successful single in years??? I appreciate going to the left to some degree but not when he shoots himself in the foot marketing-wise. Besides, the way he played Black Sweat at 3121, playing the bass like he's trying to murder it is something a national audience MUST see. headbang

I never really dug that track untill i heard it live at the O2, then it simply blew my mind, it starts off with this sound that sounds like a commuter train leaving paddington station, after a few shows my brother told me that P made some remark, that due to all the controversy, P was renaming it "politically correct sweat" cool

I heard that too. And YES the Chilli Peppers are STILL off the chain even though most of them are in their mid-40s. And Anthony Kiedis is STILL foine as hell with his shirt off. It wasn't a tour show it was a performance in a really intimate venue with awesome lighting and sound. It aired on Rave which is an HD channel on Dish Network. It was on a show they call Soundstage. They've shown some really beautiful concerts on there. The Pretenders show was great as well as Sheryl Crow. Seal's was done at some beautiful venue in Germany with an orchestra backing him. Ridiculous! It's a cool show.

Edit:

I just checked and Sheryl Crow's concert is on now. lol And they always show different performances from Montreaux Jazz. I've always thought this would be a great channel for Prince to air a lot of his unaired shows. Oh and the Seal concert is coming on in 2 hours. The description says it was performed in Dusseldorf, Germany with a 50 piece orchestra. This show cranked up on my surround sound system is CRAZY!

This was what I wrote on my blog after watching the HalfTime show this morning:

When I watched the HalfTime show, I had two things in mind: I was going to watch the kind of guitar player he is and I'll watch how he gets the crowd involvled in the performance. All the while, I couldn't help thinking about the rain. How hard was it coming really coming down? What was going through his mind? Did the music carry him through the miserable conditions and make them not quite as miserable? On top of that, the whole "why he didn't get electocuted" thing. I was looking him over, but I didn't see a battery pack on him. I knew that his guitars were cordless, so there's really no explaining that one.

I just blocked out all of my doubts and took the show as it was. He got the crowd going with "Let's go Crazy" and with that Hohner guitar, he just got such an amazing sound out of it. He always seems to make it sound amazing live. It doesn't even equal to the original recording. What I forgot was that that part of the show was pretty long, but I didn't check the clock. He sheds his guitar and just goes with a mic for the next set-up. I don't think anyone else will be getting a marching band onto the field to help him make the songs more impressive. That was certainly an unexpected move when I saw it the first time. I decided that I didn't have any choice, but to watch the Twinz and during "Proud Mary" they actually helped.

"The Best of you" was his performance so far, but he can get such a sound out of that baby blue Fender Stratocaster. Because of this performance and a few others, it's probably my favorite of his non-symbol guitars. He just seems to know which guitar goes best with each song and gets the sound he's looking for. Being Prince, though, he had to add a little scream into the song before taking off into the guitar solo, but wow...

"Purple Rain" wrapped it all up and that's when I watched him get the crowd involved. It was like they all knew the song and how the "sing-along chorus" went, even though he had to sing it for them a couple of times for. When he just went off on guitar while they were singing, he also got the marching band to back him up. There's really no words that can describe the display for me. And the crowd cheering at the end, wow... Even better was when he took a bow and that look on his face, he seemed so humble and thankful for the opportunity to bring his music to the biggest audience of his life. Something about that last song and the end of the show just made him seem... legendary. There's no question about it.

...I also forgot to mention that I was wondering how/why he didn't slip at any point when the stage was THAT wet giggle

I guess another reason why this year's show wasn't as impressive was cuz there was no weather conditions. The fact it was raining and Prince was a great sport about it adds more to his show.

Given that I have seen more impressive shows from Prince, there's nothing quite like this on this great a scale cool
had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

again once proven that prince goes left when he should go right. i agree about he bet awards as soon as i heard that bass ..i was leaping out of my chair. but really i think in retro he did the right thing cause black sweat has never hit me live the way it does on record.

but it would have still been better than LGC big grin

I still think he shoulda done Black Sweat and it strikes me as odd that with all the live tv performances he did in 06 and 07 he NEVER performed Black Sweat. Isn't that what you're supposed to do when you're promoting your most successful single in years??? I appreciate going to the left to some degree but not when he shoots himself in the foot marketing-wise. Besides, the way he played Black Sweat at 3121, playing the bass like he's trying to murder it is something a national audience MUST see. headbang

Thank you. I will NEVER understand why Prince didn't peform Black Sweat as least once on TV. I knew about Prince doing Fury on SNL a couple of days before the show and I was pissed. Sure, the performance was great but I didn't understand why he wouldn't pronote a song that had just been out for even a full week. Prince and his timing for things like that are off, for the most part. Makes me scared to think what will happen when the next CD comes out. How will Prince fuck that up?
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

eek which tour? not their last one stadium arcadium right?

This show cranked up on my surround sound system is CRAZY!

damn i love seal as well..i have the show from paris that was released on dvd..as 4 the chilli peppers, i'm surprised that they haven't put a dvd out of their last tour since they did 4 the previous tours..only time will tell
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

I'm watching a Tom Petty concert right now in HD (trust me, NOT for the faint of heart) and he sounds aiight but there's NO excitement whatsoever. I think he's very talented but definitely a snooze in concert zzz He's in an arena and the people are just standing in front of the stage. WTF??? No energy, no excitement, NADA.
