I kinda wish Prince has waited a year to do the Super Bowl so that he could be a part of last nights historical game. Last year was historical in it's own right but last night was just breathtaking and I wish Prince was a part of it. We have last year so it's all good.

GO GIANTS!!!!!

Last night was good, but last year's was just as historic. First time there was a black coach, let alone two, in the big game, plus the rain, that was a first too. And it was in Miami, which is obviously P's kinda town. I loved that his suits were in the colors of the University of Miami and Dolphins colors. He pimped out that Superbowl in Miami! pimp Somehow, Glendale Arizona doesn't seem as glamarous and lacks flava. lol

You are absolutely right. After I wrote that, I was listening to the one of the sports radio station here in NYC (It's NOTHING but Giants here obviously) they were playing clips from the game with Tom Petty's song, "Running Down a Dream" I think it's called, and as I was listening, I realized Prince played when he was supposed to. What SCNDLS said was on point and thank you for spelling it out for me with those stats. Plus, no one here is talking about the halfime show because of the big win so it's all good. I'm still ecstatic over the win.

A Perfect win.....for the GIANTS!!!!!
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I know this is probably abit off topic, but there is some great debate going on about live performances. To those of you that have not seen U2 live, next time they are in location near to you, make sure to get a ticket, they will blow you mind. I first saw U2 in 87, it was the last show of the Joshua Tree tour, and it was in my hometown, Cork. At the time I was totally anti-U2, basically coz everyone was into them, there would be major arguements and discussions about Joshua Tree Versus SOTT. This even prompted one of P´s most famous quote´s after the grammy awards, where U2 had just taken the award for best album, P´s reply was to say, "OK, I can do that, but U2 cant do the Housequake" . In 95 P put U2 lead singer Bono to the test, at an aftershow in Dublin, they sang The Cross together, which of course was the song which P had made reference to back at the grammy awards. I have heard the version they did, Bono kept forgetting the lyrics lol

Anyway, in 87, after the dissappointment of SOTT london show´s being cancelled, I went to the U2 concert, I was expecting it to be similiar to basically listening to U2´s music on a loud stereo, but boy was I wrong, from the moment they came on stage, it was a total party, one of the best show´s I was ever at. I have since seen them two more times, 2001 & 2005, both in Vienna. Again, I have never witnessed any band that can get an audience into such a frenzy. I have seen alot of concerts in Vienna, including Springsteen and The Stones, and an Austrian audience is very difficult to get on their feet, but both times U2 had the place jumping from start to finish. The 2005 concert was extra special, as it was on the same day that Live 8 was done, and the show started late, as U2 had to fly in from London.

If I was to look at it from a neutral perspective, U2 are probably the best live act in the world, they sure know how to get people into a complete frenzy. BTW, U2 3D is probably at a cinema near you, from what I have heard, it is almost as good as the real thing wink

my apologies for Hi-jacking the thread lol

I totally agree with you Whitnail. I saw U2 about 8 months after I saw Prince with the Musicology tour and I saw why U2 is one of the best rock bands ever. They had the best halftime show until Prince showed up in 2007. They are a class act indeed and I have nothing but respect for them.

Did Petty buy some time and thank all the fans the way Prince did last year?

Prince's thank-you was the classiest thing I may have ever seen on TV.

That was nice, but didn't that appear weeks later during the grammys? I don't think it was right after the performance.

I could be wrong - I often am - but I thought it was shown in the second half of the Super Bowl.

No problem, I do it all the time. wink lol Unfortunately, I go off on a tangent sometimes but to me this is an organic discussion so it's kinda natural to digress a bit. nod

As for U2, I agree, that as a band they are probally the best touring act around that's still putting out relevant music and knows how to rock an audience. Unlike The Stones and Paul McCartney who are still trading on their success from the 60s and 70s and rely heavily on the baby boomers' nostalgia for their touring success.

However, Prince and U2 are two totally different animals in my opinion. I went to see U2 a few years back, great show, lots of fun, and I'll never forget it. And I would definitely go see them again because it's a great, high energy show. But it will never compare to any Prince show I've ever been to, even an average, by Prince's high standards, performance. Much less ANY Prince aftershow.

There's just something special about how prolific Prince is and the fact that he embodies so many talents and skills. He doesn't need the pyrotechnics he can just sit at a keyboard and rattle off a medley of some of his songs and hold the audience in his palm without blowing them through the back of the arena. The frenzy can be nice but to me it takes away from the music. Not to mention how funky Prince is. Bono is a lot of great things but I wouldn't call him funky. LOL! At least not the good kind. lol

As for the game itself, last night's was 1000 times better than last year's. I'm so excited for the Giants but I kinda feel like a traitor cuz I live in Dallas and they beat us. But I can't help but smile every time I see Eli's goofy lil face. He was always classy even when the media, New York fans, and his own teammates questioned his heart. And in this day and age where most of these athletes are complete selfish pricks, that's saying alot.

I may have missed it if it did cuz I had a house full of drunk football fans at the time. But I do know that it aired during the Grammys cuz I still have it saved on my DVR and watched it last week. That was definitely a class move by Prince, too bad it was followed up with fan intimidation tactics.

yeah, I agree, I remember annoying alot of people after the U2 shows by going on about prince shows I had seen, I personally think U2 have found a very simple method to get across to the masses, it is to be heard in their lyrics, music and live performances. It is very much a case of a formula "KISS - Keep It Simple Stupid" which works for them. Prince musically is on a completely different level. For a neutral fan, going to a Prince concert, is probably a very demanding task, something I noticed at the recent O2 concerts, some people simply did not get what was going on. This was particularily evident at the 25th of august mainshow, although Prince kicking the show off with Planet Earth, did not help.
If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

getting into U2 is in some ways similiar to getting into Prince, albeit probably not as complicated. The U2 album that did it for me was Achtung Baby, there are probably a few reasons for this, as I was in Germany when I got into it, and they were on their massive Zoo TV tour at the time. The album was recorded in Berlin, and was very much the first time U2 started to experiment with their sound. This album was followed very shortly after by Zooropa, which contains a track called Lemon, which many people say is an ode to Prince, due to its use of falsetto and quirky lyrics. A good album to start with is probably the Unforgettable Fire, this was the album, that very much put U2 on the map, particularily in America. Other notable albums are all that you cant leave behind and how to dismantle an atomic bomb. There are also some brilliant live videos, especially Zoo TV in Australia.
If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

I LOVE U2 and yes the performance was moving but THAT was because of the September 11 tragedy so they had a lot of extra emotion and patriotism working for them. That was an extraordinary circumstance and by no means a normal Superbowl. However, IMO if we base it solely on sheer excitement, fun, and thrills, which is what the halftime show is supposed to be about, Prince is STILL and "always will be (pussy control)" err I mean number 1 wink lol and MJ is in the top 5.

U2 were incredible at the superbowl, Where the streets have no names, is one of my fav songs of all time, especially live. I remember when I saw the superbowl version, I was totally confused as to how they managed to get a stage and all those people out on the field in such a short space of time, I actually thought it was some sort of broadcast from a concert. I personally would not be able to put one show over the other. P´s performance was definitely hampered by the weather conditions, which added a certain flare to the show. To be fair, not many would have delivered such a captiviting show in such conditions.

Has Springsteen ever did the halftime superbowl show?

there was talk of springsteen doing this years show but i don't know what happend and how tom petty got the nod ..but it would b cool 2 c the boss do his thing

No problem, I do it all the time. wink lol Unfortunately, I go off on a tangent sometimes but to me this is an organic discussion so it's kinda natural to digress a bit. nod

As for U2, I agree, that as a band they are probally the best touring act around that's still putting out relevant music and knows how to rock an audience. Unlike The Stones and Paul McCartney who are still trading on their success from the 60s and 70s and rely heavily on the baby boomers' nostalgia for their touring success.

isn't that what prince is doing as well as evident by that setlist during the superbowl? whofarted

I watched it again last night or early this morning and I agree with this, but as i said in an earlier post, i think the weather conditions affected the performance.

I would also add, that P´s performances like "Baby I´m a Star" grammies 85, "Peach" 94 MTV awards, RNRHOF and the Alma awards are examples of far better performances, there are many others, but these ones stick in my head wink

Sure my bias plays into it some, but I performed in a couple of Superbowls when I was in high school, I'm a huge sports fan so I always watch the game, and I'm always eager to see the halftime show. Therefore, I'm very familiar with the halftime shows for the last 15 years or so and the feeling of excitement and anticipation this show is SUPPOSED to generate. And IMO all paled in comparison to Prince's. I'm not saying there weren't some good ones, but Prince was more of a complete package instead of being one-dimensional in his perforfance like most other acts.

As I clearly stated in my post (in the part YOU highlighted) I based my opinion on the fun and thrill factor, not even musicianship cuz that's not really a big deal in the halftime show, but with Prince it was a bonus. All I'm saying is that comparing his performance to other halftime shows, NOT other Prince shows, it was the best all-around performance for a halftime show with the broadest appeal. You may think it was subpar, that's fine, you're entitled to your opinion as I am to mine.

His show appealed across racial, generational, and musical genre lines unlike any other performer they've ever had. There was something for Prince fans young and old, rock fans young and old, fans of rock, pop, blues and r&b. Tom Petty didn't do that, and U2 as great a show it was under special circumstances didn't do that. And IDEALLY appealling to a broad audience of football fans IS the goal of the Superbowl halftime show.

That post had NOTHING to do with the Superbowl, which I think was pretty obvious. I was talking about touring acts in general. Prince has consistently put out new music and performed it live.

Besides, halftime acts are supposed to do easily recognizable sing along, audience participation-type songs. It woulda been plain stupid for Prince to get up there and do his favorite cuts from the Black album or Lovesexy. Fans may have loved that but it woulda alienated the audience at home and in the arena.

Doing the Superbowl is strictly a mass-marketing opportunity for any artist. Prince had a product to sell, 3121 Las Vegas, Planet Earth album, shows at the O2, and it made perfect sense for him to get his name and face back out there on the largest stage on Earth. The halftime producers have been asking Prince EVERY year to do the show and he always declined. There's no coincidence in the fact that he kicked off one of his most active years in long time with a Superbowl halftime show which is the most viewed event on the Planet.

great point SCNDLS highfive

For me, why the P performance slightly tips U2´s is simply because I would have never have thought that an artist like P could get such a reaction from such an event. To get hardcore football fans up on their feet singing to an artist they probably would never give the time of day to, was an achievement on its own lol
If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

have u heard a live version of 3121? if u have, imagine prince kicking off that superbowl with that banging in the arena. (remember that prince had 5 nominations off a number one album the next week at the grammies with black sweat being played b4 he got on the stage)...drool

If you are going to go by Prince and his setlist then what about Tom Petty's last night? That setlist was made up of familiar tunes of his from the 70's & 80's. It's all about familiarity and getting the crowd going with what they know. That's a Superbowl halftime show for you.
