I think if Prince put on a pair of jeans and a relaxed shirt and tried to look normal and walked down the street he could get away with it but would kill him not to be recognized at all, I'm not sure he knows what he wants. [Edited 1/1/08 16:55pm]

Damn, i think i will listen to it now If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

I believe there's two possible motives for everything, and they contrast somewhat. The first is the possibility that he wants to be known as not only a musical genius, but a pioneer in terms of how music is distributed and heard. It may be that he's more driven by being remembered for such a thing than he is by his musical output now. Prince sees music as a gift from God. Wouldn't someone as deeply religious as he is find it abhorrent that this gift is abused in the way it is just now? The second possibility, one I started a thread about a while ago, is that it's just a control issue, but slightly different than first meets the eye. There has been something of a comeback in the last few years, but Prince may feel in terms of popularity that this has peaked. We know he's very controlling over his musical output, but the one thing out of his hands is how such output is received. If he felt the only way was down in terms of popularity, maybe the controlling side of his nature devised this, knowing full well the reaction, so he could say "yeah, I'm not as popular, but it's down to MY doing, not anyone elses". I know that sounds foolish, but consider what some people are willing to do to themselves to feel in control of situations. Next to some of them, it's not that outlandish a suggestion. On topic again - I don't think Prince believes in true freedom anymore, after studying religious and philosophical texts. There's a little speech that hints at that on the ONA live 2nd CD, just before he plays Free. PS. I said I believe there's 2 possible motives - I don't really have a clue, there's millions really, just putting up a couple to add to the debate. Interesting post, thanks - lots of food for thought!

Indeed, money does not buy happiness. Money does not buy freedom. Freedom does have limits, total freedom cannot possible.

I don't think any of this stuff has to do with freedom, wanting freedom. It is a business move, something overt and pretty outrageous (sueing everyone and pulling all his shit of the web). And, I don't think it is all together nasty or negative. It is just him being the cutting edge, push the envelope guy he has always been--just not in the sexual terms we all grew up with. He has always been the drama queen, just in different ways. He wants freedom as much as anyone, but does he know what it means to be free anymore or less than the rest of us? I think he would say "no" and if not, than he would say something about feeling more free lately because he is closer to God lately (or something like that).

I said I believe there's 2 possible motives - I don't really have a clue, there's millions really, just putting up a couple to add to the debate. I enjoyed reading your ideas and I do remember that little speech on the One Night Alone Love cd,when I heard it...it just hit me hard and stuck with me. A while back it was my signature line "They say money don't buy you happiness, but it'll pay for the search...Ultimately what you find out is that ain't none of us really free." Money won't buy you happiness, love,or freedom. Money complicates life but it's a necessity to be able to survive, for without it you wouldn't have shelter, food, clothing etc... But what does a person really need in life to be happy and to be free....it's LOVE and that comes from GOD. Once you can be at one with GOD,and understand why we were given life and what to do with it then maybe that's when you are FREE. Personally, I think it's a road that is sometimes difficult to travel and there are forces that will definitely try to deter you from reaching your goal. One is yourself and until you can mend the struggle within your mind and tear down the walls you build you can never really be free. Now going back to Jennifer's original post...I'm sure Prince would like to be able to be free to walk around everyday without attention being focused on his every move. If you strip away the talent and the celebrity aspect what you have left is man, a human being like everyone else. He's still that same man today, his DNA hasn't changed...the world and the way people view him has changed. Some really interesting thoughts here, all valid, as none of us really know what's going on in his head! Perhaps he really has actually gone away to travel and study the bible! Yes, I think this is what he was trying to say to us. I found it quite touching, I think we're all guilty of building someone up into our 'hero' sometimes, and talking about them like they're not really a person at all, at times. It's just human nature really. But seeing him at the aftershow so close up and hearing these words brought it home to me. He IS just a man, a human being, a person. Sometimes I really hope he doesn't read some of the threads on here, because it makes me cringe to think of it. Admittedly I'm guilty too, here I am doing the same thing

Money may not buy u freedom, love, etc....but it sure can invoke power. That's one thing I've learned since moving to LA/Hollywood...the more money u have, the more power and control u gain.
Back 2 Prince's "freedom"...the real question is....do we (the fans) want 2 b free from Prince?? If we ignore him, would we and he be free?? With all his accomplishments, will his talent be in vain? The one and only Technagirl

I know we could say, 'it's the price of being famous', but he's always said he didn't get into it to be famous - it was always about the music! What do you think? We all create images of ourselves. We define who we are and then how we act reflects that definition, that image that we hold of who we believe ourselves to be. Thus, once we create that image of who we believe ourselves to be, others then create an image of who they think we are based upon our actions or their perception of our actions. Those images others hold of us may or may not match up with the image we hold of ourselves. Prince created his image, defined it long ago within himself, the problem has always been that others images of Prince don't match up with the image that Prince holds of himself. Ever have someone view you in a way that you've never viewed yourself as being? Ever wish you could change someone's perception of you? If we strip away the image we hold of ourselves, if we truly die to ourselves, that's when we find true freedom, true happiness, because we are no longer limited by a definition of ourself and we begin to act naturally, freer, open to all possibilities and not limited to a few. Prince has always been sensitive, insecure when talking (unless he's performing), because he says what he wants to say with his music, and his lyrics, and believes that is the manner in which he says what he wants to say in the best possible way that he can say it. I understand that. In person I'm shy and rarely speak and feel uncomfortable speaking. I much prefer the written word because I can express myself much more openly and reach down deep into myself to bring forth what I want to say and believe. The problem comes in though for Prince, I believe, because while he's been able to let go of the image he holds of himself, everyone else clings to an image of him and sees him in the manner they choose to see him, not as he truly is. And that is very difficult to deal with at times. You just want to be you. You want to freely express yourself, and when you do, people come along and try to define your actions in a way that fits with the image they hold of you. No matter what you do, which way you turn, you are bombarded by others definition of you, the limitations they hold of you, and while you act naturally, freely, they attempt to closet you in, to box you in to a corner and keep you enslaved to their ideas and perceptions and definitions. So you act free, but they act in a way to enslave you to their design of you. So does Prince want to destroy "his image", in a sense yes. I believe he wants to destroy the image that others hold of him, to be able to continue to act freely, without censorship, without others attempting to impose their defined limitations of who they believe him to be. Then again, since I don't know Prince personally, all of this could just be blowing smoke into the wind.
