u must have great self control! i'd have made excuses & got outta the room quickish! i have similar story when at school we went 2 a modern dance performance. we sat in front row, a dancer struck a pose - & farted...everyone trying 2 stifle giggles. of course it was impossible. i might have 2 get GB. just a bit concerned about the long hair.. if i can look beyond tht i might have a good belly laff! | |

here's the thing, all prince movies are bad. like, they're not good as far as film standards go. but you can't, i repeat, you can't apply film standards to a prince movie. if you watch them to enjoy prince's overall wonkyness, and try to catch his humor, you'll enjoy it.
GB's plot is kind of weird and fuzzy, and the music definitely isn't his greatest, but there are plenty of kooky things to laugh at. just laugh, laugh at it because it's ridiculous, because he writes in heart shaped stationary, or whatever, just don't analyze it like it's Casablanca. | |

Alot of people have said how the music is ok but the film sucks and I agree. In fact, I had thought that up until GB, Prince had not put a foot wrong - GB was the first time I found Prince to be "patchy".
And, unfortunately it may have been his involvement with the Batman project that inspired him to make GB - working with a film and having commercial success through a film soundtrack may well have been the spark for the GB project. ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...

The only reason worth watching GB for is the peculiar achievement it has in hitting exactly the right level of badness so that it's so bad, it's bad. A little less cringe, a little more absurdity, some good bad taste, and it might have been so bad, it's good. But it's not, it's unwatchable.
I saw it once about 13 years ago on video. At first we were just bored. Then we were more bored. Then we were embarrassed and then embarrassingly bored. You know that feeling you get when someone scratches their nails on a blackboard? Well watching GB is worse because: a) it continues for 90 minutes and b) the blackboard thing is so excruciating it causes a physical reaction, whereas GB couldn't get a reaction out of Richard Gere and a gerbil. excruciating. Prince KNOWS he looks good, and he KNOWS he's cute in half the scenes, and he does a very bad job at not making it obvious that he's playin' up the cuteness for the camera. There's not a scene in the movie where you don't get a scense that the "kid" realizes he's being filmed. It's almost as bad as logging into myspace and seeing folks pictures with all those flattering "myspace angles". All this could have been forgiven if the dialogue, plot, and musical performances were really good--but the most energetic performance Prince gives is "Tick Tick Bang" and that was the one which caused all the straight men to trample over each other running for the exit, as some orger once put it. | |
