I hate when people say "Prince hates his fans". I always thought, how would they know. Like they know what Prince is thinking, or had some kinda private conversation with him, where as those were his exact words.
[Edited 11/5/07 15:08pm]

Prince's actions make it quite CLEAR that he hates his fans. That's how we know. there's no guesswork. Unless you've been living under a rock you can see that there is no love for the people that have been supporting his artistry for all these years, only to get spit on. It doesn't require private conversation...actions speak louder than words.

I'm a freelance writer/photographer. You can bet I ask sites to take down stuff they used without getting permission first. Does that mean I hate them? Not at all. The whole point of copyright law is to allow the original creator of something to decide where, when and how (if at all) something gets disseminated. I don't know if fanaticism means people automatically forget this "minor" detail or what. But come on folks, this should be common sense. Prince doesn't hate his fans. If he did he sure as heck wouldn't ever play aftershows or have a website at all. The man has always been on the forefront of sticking up for artist's rights and this is no different. It may seem over the top because it's only pictures, but it's still THE LAW for pete's sake. Sites should be happy they weren't sued years ago (by anyone, including the major media sites they all rip off on a daily basis) because copyright violation carries ridiculous fines that not one of us on this forum would EVER want to pay. And that's for each infringement.

The copyright infringement debate is such a red herring. This site operates within the law and enforces rules. That's not what this is about.

As a freelance writer, you have the right to stop something you've written from being posted or reprinted without your permission, but you don't have the right to stop people from talking about what you wrote. And as a freelance photographer, do you believe that you or the subject in your photos holds the copyright to the images?

The aftershow argument doesn't wash either. Have you ever been to a Prince show or aftershow that started on time? He loves the power of knowing he can get people there and then making them wait.

Prince really hasn't been at the forefront of fighting for artists' rights. He definitely has fought for his own, but rarely have his efforts been for others.

What law is being broken? Prince doesn't want ANY pictures of him used, whether or not he owns the image or not. He also wants to control what is said about him. It's against the law to give a bad review or to call Prince a twat?

nawwww what pisses me off is his fams acting like twats!

bro, he doesnt want you to post his copyright protected work without his permission. shit get over it already

what part dont you get?

But no one is doing that. He doesn't own the rights to all pictures of himself nor his album covers nor fan drawings of his likeness. Yet he thinks he has the right to claim ownership or copyright violation if you post these things.

But it's different. You're not a celeb/personality. If you had a fanbase and they admired your work and posted photos of you because they found you to be an inspiration, would you request that they removed the photos, even if they were not for gain? Sure you would have the right, but would you? That's what this is really about. Sometimes you can get so lost in rigidity, that you're just...
well lost.

Exactly! And I think the main difference with your being a photgrapher is that you own the copyright for your work. Does Prince own the copyright for photos that he's in just because he's the subject of the photo?

I think it would be one thing if a photograhper asked for a pic to be removed from a site; it's another for a celebrity to ask that the sites be cleansed of his image.

That is exactly the point. This also extends to Album Covers and Art drawings and scans of Concert tickets.

Okay, so my question is, if Prince follows through with the cease and blah-blah order, what if we go to log-in here one day and the site no longer exists?

What will we do?

Will our names and contact info be preserved some way so as that we can keep in touch or at least get picked-up in some reincarnated format of another board?

Doesn't Prince realize he has created a Family of Fans... a "Fanily" that can be torn apart by his threats? What will become of us orphans then?

Many of us are in contact outside of here (via myspace or facebook) and I am sure something will pop up underground. It always does.

This article was written in March 1999. So this whole new issue with Prince

isn't really new after all is it?

I would just like to know what exactly Prince wants to accomplish with this

new onslot of image control tactics?

What are we really talkin' about here Bro? I'd like to know...

It's nothing new. But it's time for it to stop.

This happened before when he released NPS and a lot of the fan buzz on the web was negative. He cloased down a number of fansites and magazines. It was awful and nasty and shat on the efforts of a lot of dedicated people.

I'm assuming that if this site cuts all copyrighted material - pictures, etc - and so long as we only quoted from less than 10% of song lyrics etc in discussion, Prince and his lawyers would not be able to shut the site down. Freedom of speech and expression of thought, etc... Also, with ergards copyright, people play covers of his material all the time... that is allowed. Discussion of lyrical/musical content in a critical forum is also allowed. We should just remove all the stuff he can get huffty about and carry on regardless... either that OR get rid of the Prince section and retain all the other sections, discuss other artists and subjevct matter and stop supporting Prince either monetarily through purchasing his music/concert tickets, etc or by word of mouth promoting his material, etc. He'd soon get the message.

Yes but this is still PRINCE.ORG and I am sure he takes issue that we use his name (luckily it's also a noun) for a website.

What an intelligent post. Of course Prince doesn't hate his fans, as you say, he wouldn't play for hours at Aftershows for practically nothing if he did. I KNOW he loved the fans in London, and he played fair with us. I think everyone is getting a bit crazy. Who knows what he might be planning to do when he gets this sorted out? I think the fact he put a 'thank you' to Housequake on his website, and gave a 'democratic' vote for the next leg of the tour, shows that he's not shutting us out at all. Oh not to mention the video clips every week, the poor man can't seem to do ANYTHING right by his fans on this site no matter what he does!

other than someone who thinks they're an idol, i can only think of one other type of person who'd charge $3,000 for an evening of entertainment, and i don't think prince wants me to say what kind of person that is. lol

Scarlet Pussy! He gives us whacky-tacky released pieces of incomplete trash like Grafitti Bridge, but won't bother giving us a Special Edition DVD of the likes of the LoveSexy Tour and SOTT Tour. So, he'd rather sue his fans than actually try and resolve issues like embarking on some type of deal for excluding the downloading and uploading of "SOME" of the Infringing YouTube Videos (I don't care what anyone says. But, the day I see someone rightfully sued for putting a Thirteen Month Old Dancing to a Song, will be the day that "HELL FREEZES OVER!!!" Give me some "REAL" logic on that decision.) and DailyMotion Videos (Even though "THAT'S" not even necessary.)!?!

1. apparently prince cares about youtube babies, tattoos and the prince posters in my house. does that make him a whiny little twerp too? heh.

2. who's crying about not getting free shit? i spent good money on my posters and memorabilia. i'd imagine most folks who got symbol tattoos did not get their ink for free. some people JUST WANT TO BE ABLE TO SHOW THEIR ARM IN A PHOTOGRAPH WITHOUT GETTING SUED. lol

C. i love when people post repeatedly to a thread about how everyone ELSE needs to get a life - it's the cutest thing ever. giggle

I get what you are saying, although in 2005 Microsoft did sue resellers in 8 states for illegal distribution. But, I think the recent major activity is based on YouTube releasing that new software more than anything, not Prince hating his fans. It is not like Prince has anything to do with the process, he filed a lawsuit to protect his interests. The YouTube software or his attorney's must have some sort of spiders going and searching sites, and sending out a standard letter, based purely on content matching not on Prince targeting anyone. Maybe I am taking it too personally given my personal opinion (collector of royalties, and a fan of Prince the musician), but it is all good, and just my opinionated 2 cents.

Microsoft had every right to sue those distributers. I dont think u get me. I'm talking about petty crap. Like siking lawyers on non profit sites that post a picture of you or an interview video.

Bravo!

I gotta say that people should try 2 gain some perspective on this. The way it is being reported by the media is very slanted, so 2 speak. Also... since it is being done in a "legal method", it comes off sounding very harsh and extreme. Prince surely does NOT "hate" his "family of friends", as he would call them. The other thing folks should consider, is he may be planning something on a grand and generous scale 4 his "fams"...

Yes he should respect the fans that pay for his work, likewise there their has to be respect for work.

i believe that prince should protect his PRODUCT - that which he created or was/is sold under his name. songs, albums, movies, even the music videos that aren't available on DVD. FINE. protect them to the fullest. that's prince's meal ticket. it's his life's work and he has a right to be overprotective if he likes.

but a parody of an album cover?
fan photography?
a picture of a symbol tattoo on someone's leg?
a baby dancing in a youtube clip with "let's go crazy" in the background?

i'm sorry, dude's gone too far. prince and his music are part of this world, and pieces of him and his work are going to pop up in the periphery of photos and videos. to expect otherwise across the board isn't just arrogance, it's delusional.

Prince's silence in the matter (and usually all matters) doesn't help. If he's doing this to unveil a website that rivaled the last one, he should say so. But still many artists have un-official sites that discuss the music of the artist and what not without any issue. Not saying that what they do...Prince should follow form. But unless there is a proven copyright violation and loss of monies due to that violation, I think Prince ought to let it be. I also think many don't like his official site for discussion and lack of content but most importantly being spoon fed news like back in the day.

Again, his silence in this matter doesn't make anything better. If he does speak out, he ought to do so in a normal manner and not the mumbo jumbo rhetoric we normally get.

You must also understand that many of us are simply frustrated that P has been doing this for years. Considering that many of us are music fanatics and thusly, visit and engage on other artist sites, this behavior is not the norm (in fact it's the exact opposite) and feels very unfair to us. Especially those of us that have been around a long time.

i think YOUR perspective, while struggling admirably to pacify, is extremely generous.

i have a clear understanding about why prince would want to control a great deal of the content he and his legal teams have gone after in the past. sure, sometimes i arrived at that "perspective" after a good deal of grumbling and teeth-gnashing, but after several of his past crusades, i "get it".

this time? i have a lot of history to draw upon and a lot of insights into the artist and the man - years of it, from all over the place - and i've yet to find one proper, compelling argument that suggests why a picture of someone with a prince-themed tattoo violates prince's rights. or why a picture of my friends sitting on my couch - that JUST HAPPENS to have a prince poster in the background - is violating prince's rights.

i can't "gain perspective" on how that's reasonable. and ya know what? i've been listening. waiting. still am. and as of now, i still have nothing.

Thank You! clapping

The majority of the folks, myself included that are voicing frustrations have been on this ride long enough to know and understand his eccentricities. However, what I can't "gain perspective" on...is where it'll end?

If posting a picture of some friends friends sitting on a couch in front of a picture of Prince is a violation of his copyright now? Wouldn't it be very easy for him to later say that having the picture at all is also a violation of his copyright?

If I can't freely discuss his work on a community forum on the internet now? Wouldn't it be very easy for him to later say that I can't freely discuss his work, while I'm sitting with friends in a restaurant?

A couple of years ago, he politely asked people to send him their bootleg stash. I have no idea of how many people complied but what happens if his next crusade is to come banging on our doors with copyright warrants and not ask so politely?

It's probably all because he saw someone's post of the "red suspenders picture" of him. confused

Well, I'D probably threaten to sue to get that picture removed if it were me! razz

I'm sure Prince does not lack reasons for his behaviour.

He could be reacting against the concept of "fan" which clashes with his beliefs (i.e. that God must come first)... Or maybe he is simply trying to reclaim his own identity which he feels has been stolen, misinterpreted or disgraced by many.

Who knows what we would do if we were in his position? From a distance, it seems easy to be famous and living the glamorous life, but at the end of the day we're all humans and we have to deal with our emotions, regardless of how rich or poor we are. Being rich does not protect someone from being emotionally or psychologically hurt.

And as the saying goes: "Hurt people, hurt people".

Having said that, it would be a real shame if this website had to be closed down, as I have met some great people through these forums...

Yes, the aftershow I attended started just over an hour after the main performance! biggrin

The poor man, my ass! He's gotten more money from his fans than everybody on this board combined has in the bank!

He gave us videos, he let us vote! Boo hoo! Leave Prince Alone!! rolleyes I might end up being happy to retire from fandom after all!

Well he's got more talent than anyone on this board put together!!? So?

Just saying, maybe there's a 'bigger picture'!

Er, it obviously hasn't crossed your mind that he might have needed a break to restore his energy after the main show (ie have a shower, change his clothes, have some food and maybe even take a nap, and who knows what else) basically relax a little, before giving his fans something well worth the wait! No? Sorry if this shocks you, but Prince is not a robot!

Peace.

I really dont care what the bigger picture is. Im not buying into it anymore. I have bigger things to consider in my life than to drop everything, follow him and to worship him.
