i grew up in the 80's and loved his material then, doesn't mean 20 some odd years later i constantly want 2 relive it or xpect his albums now 2 b like it was then. if i can go 2 a concert without hearing one 80's song i would mark it the best concerts since TGE tour. oh wait, he didn't do those old songs on their as well big grin

Are you making an assumption here to fit your perception of the album?

Perhaps, Prince used the album for other reasons, for example, as a vehicle to promote his 21 nights in London?

not at all, when musicology came out there was a video that was in rotation on video music channels, 3121 had the same premise. If anything PE has relations 2 either musicology or 3121 is that both the london shows and musicology tour, u got his latest album, but he rarely played songs from the albums instead focusing on nostalgic songs.

my perception of PE as a album is seperate. i would rather blast chaos and disorder in my ride than PE. In fact PE STILL hasn't reached my car stero

So let me get this straight.

You are saying that if Planet Earth had an initial video in rotation from the get-go, like Musicology and 3121 did, then it would serve as confirmation that Prince valued this album and wanted to plug it?

If that's what you are saying, it seems a very simplistic viewpoint.

I can’t believe you took your time to explain why those tracks are rubbish ...
THE WHOLE ALBUM IS JUST RUBBISH TO ME!

... do you remember the tours that Prince focused on the song of his latest album?
Why didn’t he play much of the PE songs during the London gigs?
Because they’re rubbish! I know, and Prince knows!

prince hasn't fully toured behind a album since TGE..becoming more of a nostaligic act instead of supporting his latest.

... ??? ... so ... Prince didn't release a great album which can bring a great tour since 1988!

I'm glad he does know that his albums aren't strong enough to deliver a great a tour. We all know Prince is 90% nostaligic.

yes it would have as well as going back 2 the formula of touring behind it fully. PE seems like it's a after thought.

i disagree..TGE was and is a bonafide slamming album and a tour that focused on it. Emancipation could have been the same thing, but ever since it's been 95% old material

Just "trying" to listen to it again today. It is so embarrasing, so pointless. Im not normally a negative person, but this is really is so bad and as a life long Prince fan I cant understand why he would make such slop.

We all know how bad the lyrics to Resolution are, but it doesnt stop there - Mr Goodnight is probably a 3121 reject, and it is STUUUUPID! Somewhere here on earth is dumb fluff with an embarrasing sound clip of an old record being played at the start. The 1 you wanna C gets lots of love round here, but its a throw away, bad produced half assed and really badly sung song. planet earth has the cheesy could it be magic ruining it, Guitar is booooring. chelsea rodgers isnt prince singing and is really repetitive song which goes no where. All the midnights sounds like a drunk retard - I could go on...

After the progress of musicology and 3121, this is a real let down.

Some of the other records which people usually consider "crap", like NPS, Emancipation, Rave, Chaos, News, etc I always found some songs which were worth listening to on these, but PE has NOTHING worth listening to. Thats why I think it will go down as his worst..

Thanks for your input, but personally I enjoy it.
Planet Earth and Future Baby Mama are my personal favorites.
Next would come Somewhere Here On Earth (very well done, The One U Wanna See (fun song), Resolution (great message), and Mr. Goodnight (loved it the first time I heard it).
Guitar is a fun song, and I like the guitar riff.
Chelsea Rodgers has a nice beat, but not a personal favorite.
Lion of Judah is all right, but it seems like it's missing something.
All the Midnights In the World...I don't like the shifting of his voice in the song. confused
But other than that, I could listen to it all the way through and be satisfied.

confuse And your opinion is that Emancipation is funky dance music? confuse It's just that it is a generally held opinion that the 5 albums you have at your top 5 are not Prince's greatest albums, and I don't think they would be categorized as "funky dance music". (For the record, Purple Rain probably doesn't even crack my top 10 P. albums.)

L4OATheOriginal said:

does that include SOTT? hmmm and even chaos and disorder has more "gems" than PE

Yes, even SOTT (for those who don't know--I don't really like SOTT). In fact one of my favorite songs is on SOTT: Forever in My Life. I've never said SOTT is a bad album, I just happen to think it's terribly overrated and do not happen to think it was Prince's greatest moment/album as many do. Planet Earth is a bad album.

I definitely agree. I came into this at the latest phase possible and I wanted to gather perspective from all over. Musicology & 3121 were among the first 3 albums I bought because I wanted to get the perspective of what he's like now compared to what he used 2b like.

Very bold to say such-and-such about Purple Rain. That's a first. I'm so blown away that I'm not even gonna retilate.

People have told me which albums I should get because they believe they're the best/must-haves. Sure, they've been right every time.

But I still find something to appreciate in everything he does because of where I came into the game. I don't let others tell me how I feel about which albums or which ones I call my favorites.

I commend you for daring 2b different, RumAndRaisin thumbs up!

why is news offensive? cause he doesn't sing on it?

Please. Because it is BORING. It's full of meandering jam sessions that don't turn into anything memorable.

OK, I take that back. I should use those words, but I couldnt think of another way to describe it at the time..

for all of you who have commented - thanks. you (and I) all have rights to opinions on music. I have the right to say it is his worst ever.

Other albums, like Rave, Chaos, TRC, NPS keep appearing, and someone dissed Purple Rain (wtf??), but Im OK with that as its your opinion.

I still love Prince, and I regularly listen to records like 1999, ATWIAD, Parade, Lovesexy, Controvery, etc with amazement and happiness. I am still a Prince fan, one bad album wont change that.

mmm... PE is right in line with his recent actions, doesn't anyone see this?

the simpler, acoustic, "village" approach to life... he's becoming more european by the minute. more organic.

this internet-based virtual culture has to stop! it can be good for a few things... getting some info, buying music or other products, but it's taken on a life of its own that's a scary reflection of people's delusional mind-sets - a lack of wanting to deal with reality!

it's not all about the $$, folks... prince could stop working today and be set up for life. we all know that.
