New topic Printable Next leg of the tour That vid does remind me of the 2 funky GM vid Music and fashion do go hand in hand and Prince especially embraces that if you recall the versace inspired rave unto joy era and the Get wild single which featured in the Pret a porter soundtrack (the 1994 film based in paris during fashion week also) Where have all the raspberry women gone?

Wow that's really unexciting. I could maybe see the concept of Prince watching the fashion show and ending up onstage, but it seemed poorly executed.
And it didn't illustrate anything about what the lyrics are saying about her. Pretty empty. Maybe the actual performance was more exciting. Twinz have nice bodies, tho My Legacy

Okay, here's my take on the video: I LOVE the song, "Chelsea Rodgers", but I'm just not feeling this video. As some other people already stated, it was weird seeing Prince sitting in the audience with a microphone, singing along with Shelby. I would have liked it better if he would have been up onstage singing. It just looked and felt ODD to see him not being onstage with the band, since that is where he belongs. I did not like it at all.
And yes, the Twinz definitely need some dancing lessons. I'm sick of their "step side to side and twirl my hair" routine. Shit, I could do that, and I'm not even a dancer, seriously! Prince needs to dump them already, they totally spoil the video for me, and make it hard for me to watch and enjoy it. (And yes I'm hating, but I don't care, fact is fact). Shelby looked and sounded great, as usual. I like her a lot. As for Chelsea herself, well to me, she just looks ordinary, nothing special. I don't know if I'm going to watch this video again, it just doesn't do much for me either. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

there's the point where she is walking the runway and she looks like she's on episode one of America's Next Top Model. At least she didn't glue a wig to her face & cry in front of Tyson!!

I don't mind the Twinz. They have energy & novelty value, even if they lack a bit in the dancing skills. But somebody's got to dance. Prince & the band aren't exactly like their 1987 counterparts.
I just didn't get the video. I still have no idea who Chelsea Rogers is. SOSGemini said the video lost its narrative & I agree. It was almost about something, but not quite. And Prince was playing it too cool. It's a fun song (the 2nd funnest on the album) and he's frowning through the whole thing trying to impress everyone. My Legacy

But the Twinz are the worst dancers that Prince has had to date, IMHO. Even Geneva was better than they are. The video is definitely not Prince's best one, sad to say. "Chelsea Rodgers" in one of my favorite songs on PE too, I think the video could have been better. [Edited 10/28/07 13:42pm] RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

i love the song but...what a heap of crap. agree with pretty much all the negative comments so far
and it would be nice if prince explained his fascination with this girl. some parts of that video (the bit where chelsea is beside shelby mouthing her own name as shelby sings it, most obviously) are just fucking creepy

Most definitely..she did her little Shelby J step towards the end too..her soulful voice and vibe, almost took me to chu'ch there for a minute..... I'm just sayin', sista was bringin' it....(matter of fact..where's my chu'ch hat and fan?) Chelsea is cute and it's about time a model smiled! True, although most runway models don't smile, but apparently that's the norm. Prince, yeah he's alright. Yes, the brotha did his thing well! The Twins and the band kept it rolling in a funky fashion. Agree, they kept the energy flowing as well as the band. [Edited 10/28/07 14:18pm]

This one's just riding on the excitement that he's performing at all. Prince doesn't really give anything to it. My Legacy

the video was meh. I like the song and all but damn Prince you could do little more then what you did. Kinda reminded me of Brittany Spears Horrible "comeback" performace

Geez - and I thought I over-analyzed and was over-critical. Yeah, there's no real narrative - but it's a music video for f-'s sake, how many have a coherent narrative???!!!!
It's got cool visuals, a cool vibe. Yeah, something feels awkward and I think it's because they were filming (at least parts of) it at a real event and had to mix it all together. It gives it a kinda tension which I like, but which may annoy some ppl. Anyway, it's cool and different... "We've never been able to pull off a funk number"

I think people may be forgetting that this was an ACTUAL fashion show, the performance was a surprise. That's why he sat for so long & didn't immediately join the band. The audience didn't know what all that shit was about (from what I remember). While I think it's kinda cute in general I'm not so sure the idea carries enough weight to be THE point of a music video, but the sitting down/playing it cool thing doesn't bother me when I remember the context of the event @ hand

no excuse... you can't expect folks to know what's going on...for the majority of folks the video is going to feel stilted...and even for those who know what was going on the video still feels stilted. this thing is just bad...which is sad cause he has been doing a really good job with his videos of late. its a shame. At first when I heard the song, I really didn't get/appreciate it. Now hearing it and seeing the video together, it makes perfect sense. I actually like the song a bit more than I did before. Very funky, very cool, very interesting. I'm lovin' the fashions too.

It's alright. No better than what I could do on Windows Movie Maker though at the right Fashion show.
Always liked the track though. 'dre Tried many flavours - but sooner or later, always go back to the Purple Kool-aid!
