Purple Rain" greatest film soundtrack: Vanity Fair

NEW YORK (Reuters) - If you've hummed along, tapped your feet, or even danced in your seat while watching "Purple Rain," "Saturday Night Fever" or "Trainspotting," you're not alone.

The soundtracks from those movies have been named among the 50 greatest by the editors of Vanity Fair magazine. The full list will be revealed next month in a one-time Conde Nast magazine, Movies Rock, for subscribers of its 14 titles.

"Purple Rain" topped the chart even though it was described as "perhaps the best badly acted film ever," editors at Vanity Fair said, while "Trainspotting" came in at No. 7 and "Saturday Night Fever" was eighth.

The Vanity Fair editors said the "Purple Rain" soundtrack was a flawless combination of "funk, R&B, pop, metal, and even psychedelia into a sound that defined the '80s."

"A Hard Day's Night" came in a No. 2, followed by "The Harder They Come," "Pulp Fiction," "The Graduate" and "Superfly." "American Graffiti" and "The Big Chill" rounded out the top 10.

"Saturday Night Fever's" soundtrack is "required listening for anyone looking to heat up the dance floor," the editors said. "The white suit? Not so much."

Movies Rock, which will feature stories and photos of the projects, stars, directors and musicians who created the selected movies, launches ahead of a two-hour CBS broadcast of the same title in December.

Shaft not in the top 10? That almost wrecks the Prince honor right there. Almost.

I will have to agree with Vanity Fair.

I was listening to Howard Stern this morning and he talked for several minutes about this and went on and on about the soundtrack. He also gave props to the soundtrack to Batman as well. He made Gary play several clipps from Batman and had him play Purple Rain also. I had to get out of my car so I couldn't hear if he said anything else about this topic. He did say however that he agreed that Purple Rain should have definately won.

Kinda Cool!

Where was "Superfly" on the list? confused That along with "Purple Rain" and "Saturday Night Fever" are the best soundtracks ever IMO. Also glad to see "The Harder They Come" on there. It's about time reggae artists other than Bob Marley got some recognition.

To continue the Howard Stern discussion, they played clips from "Batdance" and "Partyman." He seemed to be the only one on the show who liked it. He also professed his love for "Electric Chair," "Arms of Orion" and "The Future." They then played half of "Purple Rain," and Howard put the echo on his voice and sang along. It was a riot. As a lifelong fan of both Prince & Howard, that would be a dream guest on the show. Howard has always been a champion of Prince, even through the "weird" period. But, it will never happen, because Prince is too private, and Howard would bombard him with too many questions about his past. I could see a performance, though. Someday...

Bad acting??? Where???...geez - same shit said bout UTCM. They are both on my top 5 movie list (2gether with Trainspotting, Wild at heart & Goodfellas, and a bunch mo actually). And nooooo I'm not fanatic biggrin Anyhow, with those soundtracks - Purple Rain and Parade - Prince could more or less have been sleeping all thru the movie, they'd still b masterpieces in my (purple) world.
Feels so good it must b a crime...

Where are all the people who normally turn up on these threads to say 'these top 50 lists are rubbish' ? I guess they're only rubbish when Prince doesn't win.

Oh well, I'll do it so.

These top 50 lists are rubbish.

As a film it is a piece of crap, the only thing that saves it is the performances, of some of the comedy.

Are taking the piss? I mean, I don't think Purple Rain is a shit film, but it does have to be judged in the musical/made by musicians category. Watch it next to any Elvis or Madonna film and it's really fucking good. Watch it after Goodfellas (the film, not the pizza ad) and it's really not that good. But it IS the best music video ever made. But why can't the bass be as formidable on the record as it is on the DVD?

lol
