Tremolina said: A simple solo doesn't make it a bad solo.
And not everybody needs to play Hendrix or Satriani to be rated an excellent player. That's "guitar player's" nonsense. It's true tho' that Prince has got various simple solo's on record. The question of U comes to mind. But it's a good and fitting solo and that's what ultimately matters. I agree that it's a shame that Prince doesn't play more and longer solo's on his records, because he is capable of performing the craziest solo's live. I suggest Small club for those who haven't heard it yet, for verification. How many of the "playa's" in here can lay down so many great improvised solo's in one night? I bet not a single one. [Edited 7/28/07 6:48am] Good post; agree with everything you said. I do wish every prince album had more guitar like the playing on 7779311 [Edited 7/28/07 7:48am]

[Edited 7/28/07 6:48am] Dude, musicians do the same thing night after night. That's what musicians do. I understand that since it's Prince (and this is a Prince site) that it's extra cool to see him doing his thing. But you can go into any club with live music and find musicians laying it down. Shoot, nowadays, you can go into any gospel churches on a Sunday and find bands raising the roof. And let me tell you from my own playing experiences, most of the time it's improv city. 'Cause again, that's what musicians do. Play. Improv. Play some more. For instance, check out this cat, the late, great Gordan Gaines. He wasn't world famous, but he was a NYC legend and he laid down his share of improvised solos. This is one of his most noteworthy: http://www.youtube.com/wa...rs95nmqUrc No need to diss any of the "playas" here that frequent the org - except Embattled Warrior, 'cause he's the one who started all this . I feel the same way.
I hear his guitar solos on record and their catchy, but they don't sound like he's trying to impress anyone. They just sound like he's placed them in there to compliment the song, etc. But I have an untrained ear in these matters. To me, if Prince wanted to, he could add a killer lute solo of he wanted to.

Well, I think that there is a big difference between Prince and other Org guitar players. First, Prince is a musical genius, he has a better melodic and rythm sense than anyone here. And that is the reason his solos are better than the rest of us. You can lay some great improvisation here or there, you can master legattos, two hands and arpeggios, but Prince compose great songs with his guitar, catchy lines, cool riffs, and that is where he is best. You cant take out his ear and melodic sense from his playing, and that is why he kicks frank axtell or anyone here ass. Frank is great but he sounds like my guitar teacher or that guitar teachers that does guitar video lessons, like a buch of players at clubs per see. Like a pro musican who rents their times in the studio. Prince is a different thing, he is like Santana, he got a different approach at guitar, as much as his voice is strange, his playing is strange too. You can find a bunch of Mike Scotts around here or there. A Prince is much more rare. [Edited 7/28/07 9:06am]

Stratocaster: D'Addario .009 Les Paul : D'Addario .010 Okay, tell me this. Why does it seem like it kind of hurts now while playing around with with my "Johnson/Fender Stratocaster Model" (I hear because of it's $100 price that it is mostly a beginner's, by the way) of a guitar with "10" guage strings. I switched from having "9" guages to that and my action has been "SLIGHTLY" adfjusted, but by all means, besides the fact that they are heavier strings and the sound is clearer, it's almost just as complicated. I don't understand. My action must not be low enough or something. I swear that I think I should be just a little more comfortable while playing, but I don't know. Can someone show me a close-up photo of a guitar with the action and string guage that they think might suit me?

P's was a matter of being in the rain, his guitar slipped hella out of tune and him doing a good job in controlling a bad situation during the Super Bowl. Could you play Joy in repetition on one nite only? Yes sir.....but let me ask u this Pagey, what does that "change"? Because I can play P's leads, does that "change" that he's not a great player? [Edited 7/28/07 11:51am] Always 10's Why "10's"? They seem rough on my fingers. But, I suppose that, for one, my action's fitting precision is dubitable, and secondly, I have switched from off of "9's" to where I am now at "10's". Oh, and don't even get me started on how when I began playing the guitar that I didn't know a damn about "gauges" and "action" and "truss rods" and other terminology that takes the shit out of me when I am playing. Because of that, I don't even know what kind of strings/gauges I had before those "9's" as that was the first time in which I had changed them.

vinicius didn't insult you by saying that you are stupid. i mean we only talk nothing so special to arguee with each other. we are all here for the fun. so relex don't insult people. the whole point is that some kid named embatled warrior stated that he over come prince's guitar solos after only 3 years. i mean embatled warrior is silly. in 3 years of guitar playing you can become ok player but still many aspects of how great guitar player should sound will be missing . so embatled warrior go and practise your guitar for another 40 years and then you can (maybe0 have a right to say something as stupid as you did.

embatled warrior remember this:
expirianced guitar player who plays for a long amount of time (10 years and more )is always better then guitar player who plays for only few year even if the less expirianced guitar player practise more. prince constructs his guitar solos based on what the song needs. he is very disciplined player and his guitar solos on record are just part of composition. in other words prince plays what he feels the song needs. in live settings its totaly diffrent story there prince is ferocius jammer on guitar.

Playing guitar is such a part of who I am, spiritually, that it feels like it's been all of my life. I grew up around music. My dad was a guitarist. Type in "Eddie and Ernie" page and one of their websites will come up. Anyway, my mom plays piano, clarinet and violin. I started playing guitar when I was 5, on and off. I didn't get truly serious untill my early teens. I've been playing ever since. About what u posted, don't think about how fast you're developing. Just go along with. Everyone is different. That's how GOD wanted it. U have to follow your own road. If u pick up things quickly, then that's good. I was playing lead very shortly after I actually started playing. Because it was always in my soul. When I was very young, around 7, I used to walk around humming guitar solos in my head. And mind u, at the time, I didn't KNOW that it was guitar solos. I didn't know what it was actually, at the time. But it was very natural and obviously something that was inside of me. I had been humming solos and passages and guitar sounds. It sounded very similar to how Hendrix sounded and this was waaaay before I was even hipped to Jimi. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."
