I feel ya girl ... kudos to you for fighting the good fight. My Mom was deep into the history and culture of all peoples, especially indigenous cultures and I guess it rubbed off on me. She left me a wealth of resources that expose the centuries of lies propagated by a strictly Euro-centric worldview. The knowlege and wisdom of many of these so-called "uncivilized savages" is awe inspiring.

A people's right to self-identify is paramount and I just see it as extremely presumptious when Prince identifies himself as a black man and people try to label him otherwise.

As has been said, nearly every African American as well as many other black folks have another race in their bloodline including myself. It is not something unique to Prince. I just think people should accept and respect how someone chooses to identify themselves without qualification.

Prince has identified himself as a black, heterosexual Jehovah's Witness and he doesn't owe ANYBODY any explanations or apologies for it. Whoever don't like it...tough.

Back on topic, I see his interest in Latin culture as no different than my life long fascination with Egyptian/Nubian culture which I understand he also has a keen interest in Besides, from what I've seen, when it comes to pretty ladies the brotha don't discriminate. lol

Nice to know others take the time to learn about other races/cultures... and many thanks again... biggrin

Italians and Sicilians are also "Latin" - all of our languages are derived from the Latin Language, thus the label and the similarities in our speech.

It doesn't benefit advertisers or cultural leaders to acknowledge this, but it's a facts.

In regards to this topic tho, Prince has always had a fascination with Latin women and culture (along with an intense interest in Egyptology).

I don't know if it's because he thinks we Latinas are timid, which we aren't - or subservient to our men, which we aren't - or that we are willing to be submissive, which is not really the case either by any stretch of the imagination - or if it is that he really believes the idea/stereotype that's constantly being portrayed of Latina's pampering and catering to their man and children, which we will do if we are loved and respected enough that gets him going... the mothering of it all that he craves?

Or if it's the fiery nature of Latinas, which we most definitely are most of the time, that gets him hot... the idea that we don't care who you are or what you do and how much cheddar you're bringing home - or who HE thinks HE is - because if we get mad, he'll get spanked just like any other man. Lol. Or if it's just a visual thing.

(Personally, I think it's a 3 in 1 - big whopper of an infatuation, especially the taming "his woman" idea cause he's the MAN, lol.)

Oh and as for the Spanish Man he sings about in the song, I believe he states that's the butler waiting to take her to her luxury room to await his call on which dress she chose for the night, so he could color-coordinate with it.

Prince has never tried to be anything other than himself... and truthfully, he's dated so many women of all kinds of blends over the years.

Taking an interest in other cultures is good for the mind anyway, it doesn't mean he wants to be anything other than what he is.

I have loved the Egyptian culture, as well as The Ancient Persian and Mayan, the Spanish/Hispanic Cultures since I was a kid... the art, the dress, etc. But I am Sicilian. I don't want to change that... but I am fascinated with Ancient and lost cultures.

Prince is a mixture of cultures that have a rich history that should be honored - African / African American and Cherokee Indian (I do remember his mother saying something years back about Prince's father being a smidge italian and irish on his father's side, but who knows if that's true).

But there you have two noble cultures in themselves, don't you think? African / African American and Cherokee Indian. I don't think he wants to morph into anything else (except maybe the prince on the cover of "Planet Earth", lol), he just has a basic "type" he's attracted to in a partner. We all do.

I once dated a beautiful curvy Puerto Rican chick. After her, it was hard to forget the language, the culture, the beauty, the music and everything else. I love Latin women. I think this is P's reason too.

But what really had me starting to think is when I read the lyrics to MR GOOD NITE. Prince is making references to a spanish man.
In the song, the woman is going to go upstairs and meet a spanish man.IS prince talking about himself LOLOLOLOL

Just asking

He refers to a waiter in my opinion:

A limousine about 2 pick U up
And then took U 2 a private jet (2 fine) (yeah)
And then U gonna meet a little Spanish man
Who will offer U wine and Moet

^^I like Synergy's interpretation of it either a butler/waiter. P should do a video for this song.

Italians nee; Romans R the original Latins. It was the official language of the Roman Empire. The Spanish embraced all things Roman and were the last 2 2 continue calling themselves Hispano Romand up until the 1100s AD.The 2 cultures R so intertwined it hard 2 believe they R separated by France! eek
