Just wondering why the opening lyrics to this song are not "dance the dance electric" like Graycap23 said they were gonna be here. (Fun starts around post #97.)

OK. I've now raised this song up 2 "masterpiece" level. It is Epic in all the right ways. The buildup is fantastic, and Prince at his absolute "best".
I highly suggest that everyone seriously listen 2 this song, and album, when U have a CD of it. The parts just jump outta nowhere. Please also throw away any mp3 versions U may have after U get the CD. Trust me. ~G [Edited 7/16/07 14:45pm] "He's a musician's musician..."

I can't believe were judging this album based on lame-ass rips, with 7 out of the 10 songs in MONO! As soon as I heard that rip, I deleted it until I found the good one Saturday night. That said, "Planet Earth" the song is fantastic. Definitely one of, if not my fave from the album.

This is by far and away the standout track on the album for me . I mean how many of you can honestly say , when that guitar solo kicked in around the 5 minute mark that you didn't get goosebumps.
This is a clsssic ...maybe live there will be an even longer solo

This is a clsssic ...maybe live there will be an even longer solo The guitar solo is great. The problem is, you have to suck up five minutes of less-than-stellar before you get to it. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

this is where I do a MJ/Prince comparison
Don't stop 'til U get enough - I Wanna Be Your Lover Thriller - 1999 The list could go on... but now... Earth Song - Planet Earth 'dre Tried many flavours - but sooner or later, always go back to the Purple Kool-aid!

I've only listened to the album once, but "Planet Earth" is definitely my favorite- ballsy, grandiose and passionate. I haven't been able to decipher the lyrics yet, but I like hearing Prince being ambitious. Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you!

Underwhelming opener. There are three sides to every story. My side, your side, and the truth. And no one is lying. Memories shared serve each one differently

I said it briefly earlier, now that i have listened to it a second time, the title track is immense. The solo is as emotional as any he's ever thrown down. Although this is far from a stellar album. Does anybody else think that the barry Manilow interlude was a nod to his vegas stint? e.g. taking the piss out of those who said he had become a lounge act by throwing it seemingly with ease into a track thats far from vegasy?

Intriguing that he starts the album with a moderately paced track.
Think of his last few albums (with thge exeception of maybe TRC), he usually hits U right in the face with a upbeat number or something that has a strong drive. In "Earth Song 2", he's opted to use dynamics to his advantage here and it works. Sounds like an overwhelming version of Splash - maybe not such a bad thing. Better here than at the end or I may have called it a self-indulgent closer! 'dre Tried many flavours - but sooner or later, always go back to the Purple Kool-aid!

Listening to this track for the first time brought a tear to my eye. Somewhere in the deep recesses of my soul, I felt the twinge of my youth calling. Those old days when I heard my first Prince album (Dirty Mind).
Brought back some memories. Powerful.

But I'm a sucker 4 his so-called epic songs (Empty room, Strays). I still feel this should have been the last song on the cd. [Edited 7/17/07 14:40pm] Love4oneanother

Wow.
Such a strong song. From the dissonant piano opening, to the bare vocals, to the incredible epic ending...what a song! Damn, damn, and damn. It even makes Guitar sound good. A GREAT way to open the album. This album blows 3121 out of the water. Some people tell me I've got great legs...

Meaningful lyrics/not crazy 'bout it "Bring friends, bring your children and bring foot spray 'cause it's gon' be funky." ~ Prince
A kiss on the lips, is betta than a knife in the back ~ Sheila E Darkness isn't the absence of light, it's the absence of U ~ Prince

P has such a unique sound mane. The chords are so him. So individual w/ all these clever flourishes in the joint. Was that some Pat Methany type bridge in there? Oh lawd Then he kicked the door down w/ the axe, and brought his point home. I hope people sit down and listen. Its a ride.

Giovanni777 said: Listen 2 the 2 screams buried in the mix at around 5:15, during the guitar lettin' loose... Sound familiar? Think of "Something in the Water Does Not Compute"... So exact, it's like he sampled the original screams.
Yeah, I didn't notice that until you pointed it out. Though it's too far back in the mix to tell if it's a sample or whether he just re-screamed it. I'll listen to it a few more times... Also, did anyone else notice Prince call out "Jehovah" towards the end (in the last chorus before the guitar solo from memory)? It's kind of hidden in the background, but once you hear it, you can't miss it. I'm not a JW by any means, but I thought that was kind of cool in the respect that only Prince can get away with that on the title track of a major album when 99% of people would never even realise it . I bet the Mail On Sunday people never heard it!! Toejam @ Peach & Black Podcast: http://peachandblack.podbean.com

Loved this song INSTANTLY! I didn't mind 3121 but it had too much sugar in it for me (Lolita) and not enough deep, meaningful, revolutionary Prince
but he redeemed with this one!! yeeeaaaaa!!! (I really loved TRC too so maybe that's why I love PE, sounds like it could fit nicely on TRC)
