Nothing...maybe on the surface. But when you think about it, there were subtle things like the fact that he brought back some of that 80's flavor into the production (sped-up vocals, standard dramatic screams, the chorus to "Love", etc.).
Otherwise, I'd only say "WOW" in a sarcastic way. Let's face it, "3121" is not "Dirty Mind" dammit! NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

Otherwise, I'd only say "WOW" in a sarcastic way. Let's face it, "3121" is not "Dirty Mind" dammit! definitely not on the surface. I agree. After giving a listen last night, even Musicology has more of a "wow" factor than 3121... it can stand up to the other albums b4 it... at least I think it does. Here's the problem, I guess u could call it. Musicology is full of heart & personality... 3121 sounds a little robotic at times when I compare the two. Musicology may be more homogenous sounding, but it does cover many different aspects of Prince's personality... and I really like the person he is in the album. Not that I don't like the person he is in 3121... I feel like I can put Musicology Prince on a pedestal and learn so much more about him as a person. But 3121 definitely is more versatile when we talk about the music and it does work together as a whole pretty good... but I feel like of all the albums I own, I can say for all of them "3121 is no [fill in the title]" Come/TGE > PR > ATWIAD > Musicology >>> 3121 well, I'm gonna hope that the next album packs more of a punch and includes what I really like in an album... but regardless, I'll find something to like about it... cuz no matter what u call it, it's still Prince... and his stuff is always better than anyone else's had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. Prince does not do AVERAGE anything!!!!! well, compared to his previous material, 3121 seems average to me... but certain tracks pull it one way or the other. The Word/The Dance are exceptional... 3121 is extremely innovative (only Prince could pull off a stunt like it)... but I think our perspection of it is dimmed cuz we've seen the tracks live and prefer them that way. I prefer Te Amo Corazon at The Brits because of the spell-binding set-up he had. Everyone prefers Fury live, that's no secret. But he does improve on himself. I prefer Black Sweat to Kiss, and they're practically cousins. had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

not a wow but a hmmm,
drums on black sweat (slight distortion), 1st 16 bars of the guitar solo in beautiful, loved and blessed, silky production of te amo corazon, 1st 16 bars of the chorus of love.

Black Sweat is HOT SHIT very WOW! to me even better live and I love the 'Let's skate' part in Love...

Raze said: I really don't get what the deal is with all the love that "The Dance" gets. It's a bland 1996 outtake re-done in an extremely overwrought style. It really gets on my nerves actually.
The melody is gorgeous. The arrangement is very unusual for him. He sings it perfectly. It doesn't sound like any other song he's done. I think the real instrumentation and Latin flavor improve on the original. It's actually pretty simple. All of those things make it one of his better recent songs. The ending is a little over the top, yes, but I miss screamy Prince.

[Edited 6/7/07 14:45pm] No U're not No way, dude. I miss the nasty, Punk/Funk, "I don't give a shit"-attitude that Prince used to have. But even though he's grown up now, he doesn't quite amaze me with this album the way he did with "Dirty Mind". "Dirty Mind" was messy, and unpredictable, and shocking. "3121" has some cool moments, but there lacks an element of surprise and danger and edge. It's too safe, basically. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

It took me a while but the more I listen to it the more I like the title track.
I love the chicken scratch sounding guitar on it. I also really really have started to like Lolita, The Word, and LOVE Get on the Boat but then again i've always loved great horns on Prince records. I would've really loved FUry but it sounds like its really watered down on record, everytime I hear it I think what could've been. I've also started to appreciate the Dance much more as I continue to hear it than I first did. I think with everything on this Cd had to grow on me the more I listened with the exception of Black Sweat and Te Amo Corazon. I think Musicology was the same way with me. "Why'd I waste my kisses on you baby?" R.I.P. Prince You've finally found your way back home. Well Done.

Average isn't quite the word to describe 3121 but neither is wow... I'm sticking with The Word as my wow moment but overall the album makes me say mmm at the most.

DreamyPopRoyalty said: I think the problem with this album is that there's no WOW factor. It's just a bunch of average songs that really don't have a lasting impact.
If anything, I think the most impressive tracks are: The Word & The Dance The Word, I think is probably one of the few remaining examples of Prince's sheer brilliance in current material. It sounds like he isolated himself in a room with only a spotlight & acoustic guitar and just let the music come to him. The words might not make any sense (a lot of people complain about the bridge with the "guard against forked tongues" line), but I believe the first verse talks about his closeness with music. I'll elaborate later on. in The Dance, he added the right balance of instruments and creates 2 different characters from 2 vastly different voices he uses. And it creates a story and leaks of passion that hasn't been seen since "The Beautiful Ones" & "Condition of the Heart" Would anyone care to raise the ante and note anything in this "average" album that says "wow" that is worth listening to every now and then? Or will this be one of those albums that you appreciate more 10 years from now? Well, i'm WOW'D by several songs: Te Amo Corazon, Incense And Candles, LOVE, The Dance, The Word, Satisfied. The Word has really grown on me, I love it now...probably after I saw it on the Alama Award show, that always helps me when I see him do his songs live

There were WOW factors on this CD for me. The fact that Prince made songs that I could really dance to again (Black Sweat, Love) made me go WOW. I didn't think he could do it again cause he hadn't in a long while. The Word is a song that gets better and better with each listen and that Wows me right there. For me, I still love 3121 from start to finish and that in itself is a major WOW right there. Not since The Gold Experience can I still say a year after it's release that I love a Prince CD. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

3121- This song made me WOW the first time I heard it. It's the kind of sound that....I dunno....just has power to it. Funky power. like...unngh.
The Dance- Yet another song that wow-ed me. It was a twist on a tango-type song. Sad, yet sexy. It made me wonder just who was he crying over. Te Amo Corazon- This wowed me because it's like a theme song for my own personal love with my man. It explains how I pretty much felt about him when we met, when we started dating... Beautiful, Loved, and Blessed-- This song is wonderful. It inspired me to write a poem I read in church. Just one of those songs that personally took me on a spiritual ride. Incense and Candles--Heh....what can I say. The song itself personifies why I dig it. "The jam has got a beat like it's makin' love". Get On The Boat-- It's like a spiritual jam for me, personally. (Makes a good ringtone too.) It made me wish I could wail on the Drums like Sheila, just to get a chance to be in the band with the sound live in my ears. This one has soul.

Definitely have to agree with these. 3121 the song, I didnt really get into at first... but gotta admire all of the different sounds he packed together to make it. It shows his genius in the studio. Te Amo Corazon, I really got into at first cuz it sounded like the general relationship I had with Prince... at the time. Now I listen to the Brits version whenever I can, cuz it takes his "aura"/"essence" and gives it a form that could be seen & heard. Beautiful, Loved & Blessed rings true for me quite a bit, especially Prince's verse. I kinda wish he didn't make it a duet, but it still works. And you hit "The Dance" right on. It is like a tango... brilliance because he was playing off of his own voice, creating 2 different persona with it. Like, wow... had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

It's the first Prince album since TGE which hasn't any filler; great production (an excellent funk/dance/club hybrid), great opening song (3121), neo-classics everywhere (Lolita, Black sweat, Fury, The Dance), smooth ballads (Te amo corazon, Satisfied) and even a HUGE underrated track, The word. It's a 4 star album, that's for sure.
