Rhondab

its one of the few prince cds in recent years that I actually can play from the first song through the last....

Love, Incense and Candles, Blacksweat, and The Word.....I tend to listen to these more than the others but not necessary for the WOW effect.

i didnt like the Dance on first listen, although it sounded familiar to me.. after listening to some of his old outtakes, there was the Dance, and it was EXCELLENT. Much better than the new version. The original sounds natural and interesting, making the new version sound forced, kind of fake..

The Word, not really sure what people like so much about this song, its only OK to me.. It kinda sounds forced too.. but just OK.

Love - I like Love because it sounds geniunely like his old material and not so forced or desperate.. I put 3121 in this category too.. very cool.

The problems for me are Lolita, it just seems inappropriate for someone of PrinceĀ“s age to sing this kind of tune.. It sounds forced/fake and just plain embarrasing to listen to as a life long Prince fan...

Incence and Candles and BLB are just OK, but dont deserve to be on a Prince album, soon they will be as forgotton as Round and Round, Melody Cool and Shake. Really what was P thinking here, lets try and capture the teenage "Beyonce/Shakira" market? Its poor material.

Bleak Sweat is an embarrasment as well. I just cant listen to it.

No wow factor for me on 3121, I listen to it because its Prince and he is better than anyone else, I have heard 3121 many times trying to like all the songs on it, but unfortunately I cannot. Inevitably I skip to 3121, Love, and if I feel like it The Dance or The Word. Get on the Boat (the only song that is growing on me) is getting some listening time too these days.. But its not Lovesezy, I cant listen to it 5 times a day..

The chaotic showtune sounding break/climax in 3121 with the low monster voice groaning made me say "Wow"

but it did not make me say, "Wow, I could have had a V8!"

the freaky dissonance in the title track made me say "huh", and the funky little "let's skate" break in the song "love" made me happy for a bit, but no "wow" moments. i think it was passionately adequate.

I'll second that. A fun pop album - not trying too hard. But nothing 'wow'.

I kinda like '3121' track, but theres also something I dislike about the sound of it. It is very apparent if you listen to it on shitter speakers, with not so much bottom end, but it's still there no-matter what you listen to it on, and that's the 'shreeking', it just goes right through me. Maybe Ive been abusing my ears for too many years??! his voice effect and the high pitch guitar, just sounds over the top to me. High-light is 'The Dance' and I love 'Lolita', just the simplicity and catchiness, and it's fun.

Other than that I just don't 'feel' this one.

No one ever mentions the primal scream at the end of "The Word"... This is a new scream from Prince.

Having said that, Wacko would still be happy to turn out something as good as 3121, it's still better than the dated shit he gets out (eventually) wipes the floor with 'Invincible'
Sorry, don't mean to lower the tone! just suggesting that us Prince FANATICS are used to, and expect, a lot.

The album's chock full of tracks that sound better live... and cuz I've been exposed to them, that might be why I'm hard on it sometimes.

Fury always sounds better live... its hard for me to listen to sometimes cuz I sure don't get into it much.
Lolita does sound a little better live, but it & Fury sound similar to me... what was the word... studio plastic.
Satisfied I get into pretty rarely and I typically get bored with it
3121, I've liked more with time (didnt get into it much the first time) and it's a good title track that not only stands for the album itself, but what its like to be one of the Prince persusasion "u can come if u want, but y'all can never leave"

I'm still undecided about 'Get on the Boat,' cuz its mostly a showcase of his fellow musicians... giving them all credit for their hardwork & such... but I can't get into it sometimes cuz I like listening to his voice and hearing him play.
'Beautiful Loved & Blessed' I can relate to, but again, I like hearing Prince's voice more than anyone else's so I don't get into it until he starts singing.
'Te Amo Corazon' is one of those "personal connection" songs that I like to rave about, but its better at the Brits, I think.

'Incense & Candles' can be hit or miss sometimes with me. The rap makes me laugh sometimes cuz 'can u actually believe that he talks like that, what is he nuts'... but its a seductive track, so I like it quite a bit. And incense has the same affect on me that he does.

Black Sweat I get into, (love the video!), and its like "Kiss"'s cousin twice removed, heh... and it's an improvement on Kiss (i dont get into it much).

'Love' gets to me depending on the mood, but its got all kinds of neat little tricks in there that I like. It's a fun track to get into it and he doesn't go from point A to point B, he goes all over the place and it sets him apart.

So that just leaves my top two favorites that both start with the word "The"... haha.

The Word & The Dance

but I'll save that for my next post. I'll shut up for a little while.
But if anything, Black Sweat kinda "wow"'s me @ times, Love does, Incense & Candles does (he's such a master of seductive, love it)... and 3121 is probably one of the most innovative things he's done.

Let me just say, also, that I think Black Sweat should've torn up the top 40 charts.... but it was from Prince, so it didn't.

agreed. I love what Prince does with his album covers. He's probably the only person I know who makes them into art, giving them the same attention as the songs themselves.

3121, Fury and Love. all wowed me.. but the album is one of the best in YEARS, so after Musicology which didn't wow me at all, I pretty much went "wow" after listening to 3121 for the first time..

The whole album is WOW!!! to me, especially The Dance, Blacksweat, and Fury. Te Amo Corazon is so smooth and Incense and Candle is hot(Haters don't hate). Love is in my mind what Lovesexy could have been according to Eric Leeds when he said the first version of Lovesexy was funkier with more of a powerful bassline.

The Dance has been getting so much love on here.

People call it the new "The Beautiful Ones" and I agree...

but its kinda of the opposite outcome. He doesn't get the girl in the end here... which is kinda sad...
I try to limit my listens to it just because I think it brings the mood down to a little depressing... but its so brilliant that its hard to come out w/o a smile

I did say once that "The Word" was too good for its home (3121).
And I still believe that.

It doesn't even sound like it was recorded at the same time as the others.

When I listen to it, I have this image of Prince in complete isolation. Just him and his guitar under a spotlight on an empty stage...
And there are multiple interpretations of what "the word" really is. I think so. It depends on where your mind is.

Personally, I think the first verse is about his relationship with the music.
We've wondered how much sleep he gets and he's perfectly honest when he says "how am I going to sleep with this feeling rushing all through my veins?" and its an "inspiration that he can't get out of his brain".
That's what's cool about it, I think. It's one of those moments where Prince is on his own, music is flowing thru him like his life energy and the song basically wrote itself & that's all there is to it.

3121 is an old school Prince...U gotta love that.

Lolita is a tribute to Controversy...U gotta love that

Get on the boat...hmm...somebody wrote he/she would have liked that live..well it was on the morning show live...sooo much better...U gotta love the live version

Black Sweat is Kiss's twin...U gotta love that

Fury...much better live on SNL but still a powerful Prince playful tune...U gotta love that!

The Word...sounds like an A+ version of the Emancipation CD....U gotta love that...

3121 is like a tribute to Prince's career...U gotta love that!!!!

For me a lot on the album is wow! Still, I don't get The dance...sounds like a overly dramatic boring tune that was an outtake from the movie that Prince decided not to produce in the early 90's

I miss a tribute to Housaquake though!
