I'm glad I wasn't the only one... I heard the message but was so beside myself that he showed up my short term memory went out the window.

(Laughing about short term memory..me too! lol )

He also spoke about the jazz musicians that performed at the aftershow last week. He said they were happy to meet him, but he was more happy to meet them.

Prince just needs to open a music school....to keep the "real music by real musicians" flowing....I could see it now with the big symbol..

"Prince's School of Music

Mission statement:Real Music by Real Musicians"

[Edited 3/2/07 19:15pm]

I am so happy for him!!!!!I just screamed!!!!! I've been thinking about sending him a letter for a while now..I want some input from the orgers on this and no its not original but I think Prince is the perfect artist to pull it off successfully. See below...my apologies for the long post.

Dear Mr. Nelson,

I am an admirer of your music and have been for over 25 years. I wanted to try to express what an honor it is to be able to listen to the art you create. I have very eclectic taste in music i.e. soul via James Brown and Marvin Gaye, rock via Aerosmith and Journey, gospel via Mahalia Jackson and James Cleveland, as well as R&B via Stevie Wonder and Anita Baker. I also like the neo-soul music and I feel you were one of the inspirations of that movement. I haven’t listened to anyone as much as I listen to you purposely. I believe music is an art form that is inspired from a higher place. God gave you a very special gift that you have graciously chosen to share with the world. I hope your future plans include continuing to share as well as developing protégés in your craft. I know you can hear your influences on artists like Alicia Keyes (musicianship), Maxwell (sensual vocals), Robin Thicke (emotional lyrics), and Andre 3000 (innovative style). You have forged a whole new genre that is timeless that blends all of my favorite musical categories and mixes funk in between. I feel as though because of you the next generation of musicians/artists will feel more confident to explore and experiment…They may even invent something else new and amazing with guidance…

I am writing to you to seek your input on an idea I have had for over five years. My background is in my opinion unremarkable. I was born in 1966 in Newark, New Jersey to a single mother who had an avid appreciation for the Motown sound. Her favorite singer was Smokey Robinson. She always encouraged me to learn about art and back then there were abundant resources. I have always loved the arts, I’m a right brain engineer. I grew up in Baltimore MD attending parochial schools and I’ve studied music (piano and flute), dance (ballet and modern), literature (Scripture, classic, and Greek mythology), and art (engineering design and architecture). I feel that some cities currently suffer from a cultural anemia that is exacerbated by poverty and drugs. My children have been minimally exposed to a variety of cultural experiences and are still absorbing the benefits of the exposure. It is still baffling to me how hard it is to find quality opportunities to experience and learn about true art. I think everyone needs an opportunity to gain an appreciation for music, dance, visual, and performing art. I feel there is a void that needs to be filled.

I know you view music as an art form of great significance. You are a skilled dancer also and love to express yourself through sound and movement. Your lyrics are so creative, expressive, and insightful. You have so much to offer and I hope you would like to have a hand in shaping the next generation with respect to your craft. I wonder if you would be interested in opening a performing arts institute for inner city children. If you have ever pondered the idea now would a great time to act on it. My reasons for writing to you are selfish because I love your music and would be first in line along with my kids and grand kids to just experience your genius just like your live performances. I imagine this venture to be similar to Alvin Ailey’s Dance Theater with you in control creatively and your hand picked staff to take care of the rest. I know you could make an unbelievable impact even more global than you already have. I read somewhere that if you had not pursued music professionally you would be teaching and I know you could have done both and still can. Your students would be the biggest beneficiaries, but hopefully you would reap the benefit of satisfaction knowing you’ve further influenced our youth positively.

This idea would work for Baltimore or any other urbanized area maybe except for DC, NY, and LA where the opportunities are already abundant. I know you’re very busy with 3121 in Las Vegas. This is just something I wanted to share with you. It is not a request for money but a plea for your consideration to create another legacy along with your music. I’d love to be involved with this endeavor, but I don’t have the qualifications (I’m an engineer by trade). I would be happy to just have the chance to see the children experience your genius. With your recent Happy Feet exposure/success and Super Bowl performance, timing could not be more perfect.

Sincerely Yours

Esther Strawder-Payton

P.S. My eight year old daughter is just getting introduced to your sound and she loves it. She’s learning piano and violin this year...

I thought Bono was outstanding...especially when he started preaching. He made me proud to be a member of the ONE campaign.

Yeah Bono also received a standing O because he spoke about getting rid of world poverty and mentioned that the world needs the community that taught world about civil rights to teach it about human rights. Please don't quote me but that was what I remember.

He also received an award.

I have a lot of respect for Bono. I read that sometimes even his band members get ticked off because he's so dedicated to the cause. I was glad to hear that the NAACP is partnering with his group...it's about time.

Yeah, I loved that too. It makes him seem so humble and it totally blows my mind.

Almost as much as his outfit, omg, it was SO COOL.

:fangirl scream: I've done a lot of that tonight... I'm just so glad that I got to actually see him on TV after missing out on his short-lived Grammy appearance and a few other things.

But man, is he deep, so cool.

Prince's speech

Food 4 thought... Imagine holding the planet earth in the palm of your hand with no regard for your place of birth or your claim to any land

the only thing between us is now the truth we now all understand, if plant earth is in the palm of our hand

50 years from now what will they say about us here, did we care for the water and the fragile atmosphere
there's only 2 kinds of people and the difference they make ... ones that give and the ones that take

Ladies and gentlemen last week Tavis Smiley introduced me to some really amazing jazz musicians and as much as they were excited to meet me I was more excited 2 meet them mainly because I wanted to give them something that they would cherish forever. All that I could give them was the stage on (not "and") which I perform.

And I would just challenge the phone companies and the new digital providers to allow us to be the gatekeepers to steward (it's steward) the new jazz renaissance, hip hop, R&B (he did say R&B) and soul music in the 21st century rather then the accountants (it's accountants) and lawyers who ruined the music industry this first time around.

I just wanted to give you that food and I hope I didn't take too much of you time.

Just a few changes...

What he said is was beautiful and inspiring. Congratulations on your win, Prince.
Angels, love and light,

His hair looks like it would if he had let the Rasberry Beret do grow a bit longer.

And does anyone else think that the hair resembles a Beatles mop-top? Must be for that rumoured upcoming Beatles' covers album. confused

Sometimes these award shows re-air...maybe when the NAACP site is updated, they'll mention a re-air. It was a good show tonight...it was live for the first time. I was proud of the award show this year. It was done in very good taste, very classy.
