Ok, now here is my serious post.
So I spent a long time on Youtube today defending the whole pre-recorded thing. But something I just saw literally made me sick to my stomach! At the part in The Best Of U right before his guitar solo when he grabs the mic and screams; two LOUD palm mutes come across on the speakers while he still has both hands on the mic and is still screaming! eek confused

Look, everything else points to it being live; the few bum notes in PR, not getting back to the mic on the first solo from LGC, the wireless going out at the end of PR! It all adds up to it being live except for that one part! Did he sing live but pre-record the guitar parts? I really don't want to think so and I hope not. But that one second has me really wondering!

As far as I can tell my downloaded version's sound is in sync with the video. Please someone tell me I have a bad version or somehting, anything that makes sense! I don't think he would do that, especially on something as big as the Super Bowl! But as much as a control freak and perfectionist that he is he just might do it. But then why recorded sloppy solos? I mean the feeling was there but by far not his most technically proficient performance. But who would expect that live in the pouring rain? Or was it live? I have to go search out other versions now hoping that mine has been tampered with! pray

Please someone tell me I am wrong! sad

Before I say anything I would like to acknowledge that, yes, I have too much time on my hands...thank you.

Hey RobDogg,

I thought I'd go back and check the video for that unexplained sound you can hear just after he screams and before he gets his left hand back on the guitar neck. There's definitely something there and it does sound like someone striking muted guitar strings followed by a couple of notes ( B I think then maybe a muted G and a D ). Here's what I think happened -

Prince lets go of the guitar to grab the mic and scream. When he does that you can hear the open strings of the guitar ringing. I'd say the soundguy turned the guitar down at that point to stop it feeding back while Prince was singing. Then when Prince was about start playing again he pushed the guitar up ( perhaps slightly over shot because the noise sounds a bit louder than the guitar had been up til then). Anyway, at the same time he does that Prince is letting go of the mic stand. As he does so you can see that his right hand and the mic stand are very close to the guitar strings. I think he accidentally hits the strings with either the stand or his hand just is the sound guy brings up the volume of the guitar. That accounts for the sound of guitar strings being hit once or twice ( the second may have just been an echo ). Then you hear a couple of notes ( B, D and maybe a G ). Those are notes of open strings on the guitar - the left hand doesnt have to be on the neck to play them. Again I think they were accidentally sounded by Prince's right hand as he was getting ready to play.

PHEW!!!!

So, dont be sad...the little guy was playing live, no doubt.

Ok, well I got home from work today and just got caught up with everything. First of all thank you SDNafka for your response and I will say that is what I thought at first too: that he hit the guitar with his mic stand. But now that I have watched it a few times I think I have got it.

Before I come to my conclusion though I just have to say: On some of the responses to my post, people were saying that they couldn't believe people feel that way and it is getting old and stuff. I don't think it was directed at me specifically and I think it was just in general but I just want to say that I DO NOT and DID NOT feel that way! I have liked Prince a long time and have seen him live and on film, tv apearances etc. and I know the man can play! I apologize for the way my post came across but it really shocked me when I saw that part.

Like I said in my original post, everything else adds up and there is no way anyone could flawlessly fake that many guitar solos. And the mistakes are a dead giveaway but I must say that I freaked out last night when I saw it. confused

After watching it again I came to the conclusion that the video got delayed a second. If you watch that part again you will see the close shot from his left. But when the scream starts to end his mouth does not match the sound he is making. It's the whole ahhhhh...heeeheee part at the end. During that time you hear the two palm mutes. Then he drops back from the mic and does two palm mutes on the guitar but no sound comes out. Then it switches to a differant view and he goes into the first note and it is on track again but the switch looks funny like it was sped up or something. Maybe I just have a bad version but that is what was tripping me out.

Sorry for all the confusion over what I said. If everyone else has a different video version or mine is just messed up then I can see the confusion. Because what I heard was not reverb or open strings humming (although yes it does that at first), and it was not feedback, or something from the PA. I have played guitar for awhile so I knew what I was hearing. Anyway, I always knew it was live and that is what I guess I was trying to say, but I just didn't explain that part. My fault. (I promise I will proof read next time.) wink
Prince is great and always will be and I don't think would ever stoop to that level of pre-recording at this stage of his life.

Other than that, the performance did and still does give me goosebumps and I am proud to say I am a fan/fam whatever! lol

Regardless of who's explanation is right there is one thing I am sure of:

There are two versions... I just saw one version with the few seconds where there was a loss of synch with the sound and it has different camera angles (in that portion towards the beginning of Let's Go Crazy) then the one I saw broadcast. I wonder what the explanation for this is? So there are at least two versions of this broadcast.

Personally, I still think that it's something to do with the ghosting from the stadiums pa feeding back into the mix - that couldn't have helped any and must have been bloody distracting if you're trying to play onstage.

I played snare drum in my high school's marching band, and I remember doing a show at a football stadium where the stands were made out of concrete or something similar, and formed a solid "wall." (Other stadiums had scaffold-like metal stands.) Every single note I played echoed back multiple times... the effect was pretty much like stadium PA "ghosting." Very distracting indeed.

Prince showed what a consummate professional he is. He performs in the rain, wearing Miami Dolphin colors (a savvy and humble gesture), tears it up and wins over a crowd that is not there to see him. He couldn't have pulled this off in his 80s prime, nor in the 90s. Remarkable how far he's come since getting booed off the stage in '81.

from cnn.com

"Yes, Sexually Suggestive and OBSCENE.

I worked Prince's 1984 Purple Rain Tour in New Orleans, it too was explicit. Remember Shiela E and her performance in his tour.

Why would promoters think this would be different. HE FOOLED THEM!!!

The shadow of him playing the guitar in his trade marked suggestive manner, coupled with the distinct design of the guitar, clearly communicated his message of sex to those watching.

He knew exactly what he was doing...

More Superbowl half-time Controversy

Anyone watch Countdown with Keith Olbermann? The show closed with a discussion of Prince's "getting away" with being dirty.

I saw that last night and thought it was the most rediculous thing I've ever heard. I've seen Prince play his guitar like that a thousand times, just not behind a sheet. Their arguement was that he switched to that particular guitar when he did "Purple Rain". Hell, he switched guitars three times and the other two guitars would look much more like a dick behind the curtain than the one he used.

Then Michael Musto went on to say "We all know Prince is dirty and I love him for it" and went on to quote lyrics from over 20 years ago. If he and the rest of the staff had been following Prince's career over the years and covering it as much as they cover shit hop, they would know that Prince is not only a Jehovah's Witness now but damn near obsessed with being one at times.

Michael Musto is just upset that there is no scandal like the one after Janet Jackson's performance so they would have something to talk about for months. Now he trying to create a scandal out of nothing. What pissed me off is when he compared Prince to Janet Jackson. He said it's so much a man's world that a man can walk around with his phallus out and a woman gets scorned for accidentally showing her breast for a split second. Now he should know as a gay man that is a damn lie. Go to any R Rated movie and all you see is titties, titties, titties. Show just a tiny glimpse of a dick and they try to slap an X rating on it. I can't stand for someone to lie like that, especially somebody that knows better.

Damn you preaching. That's the truth and Michael Musto really should know better. You can't compare Prince and Janet in this case. If I may add, I hate that the movies treat the penis as if it's the dirtiest part of a man's body. A man's not a man if he doesn't have one so why try and hide it?

Once again, just when I think I can't be any more proud of Prince he pulls off something like this.

I was at the stadium as part of the onfield cast. I twisted my knee at the staging area and wasn't able to run on the field Sunday. But I did get to watch the whole halftime show and I participated in all the rehearsals.

Not only was it pouring rain out there, it was windy and chilly as well. I say this so you can appreciate what professionals Prince and his band are. They were the real MVPs of the Superbowl. Even with my leg aching I wouldn't have missed this for the world!

The majority of the cast were kids aged 16-21. Last week they were clueless about Prince. They looked at me like I was a crazy old lady because I was singing all the words to every song we rehearsed to. lol I was eavesdropping on some of their conversations...

kid#1..."How's Prince getting here?"
kid#2..."I bet he comes in his pink Cadillac!"
kid #1.."Yeah, and I bet it has a yellow interior."
kid#3..."How old is he?"
kid#4..."I dunno, he's pretty old. I think he's 40."
lol

Everything changed at dress rehearsal.

When Prince came onto the field there was polite applause and a few cheers from the youngsters. By the time he left, these same children were screaming and running behind the cart he was riding in! He had those babies in the palm of his hands. They'd never seen anything like it. Some of them were so awestruck that they forgot they were supposed to be dancing and just stood there staring in wonder.

Words cannot describe what it was like to witness that. Real music by real musicians is something they're just not used to being part of the Justin Whatshisface generation. Prince totally blew them away. lol

I really wish it hadn't rained because he would have been able to dance around more like he did at rehearsal and the flames shooting up at the start of the show wouldn't have made so much smoke.

Nevertheless, the show was unforgettable for those of us at the stadium. The music, Prince's singing, the band, the light show, the fireworks...EVERYTHING!
Who else but Prince could steal the spotlight away from the actual football game??? The fact that he was wearing Miami Dolphin colors was much appreciated by the locals as well. They are still talking about Prince on the news down here.

Good times!

I wish you guys could have been on the bus with me on the way back with all of these young people going "wooo hooo hooo hooooo!" I asked some of them what they thought about Prince...
"He's baaaad!"
"Yeah!"
Their little eyes were as big as dinner plates. lol

Here's some pics of our parting gifts;

everything EXCEPT the 3121 poster of course. lol

That's real sweet there babynoz! cool

I noticed those guitar sounds as well. But the pic/sound looks in sync to me - I've come to the conclusion that the sound is most likely a sample coming from Morris' keyboard. There is the same sound earlier in the song, just before the chorus. Just a theory.

Yeah, the coda fills were played by The FAMU Marching 100, and they did a stellar job. Apparently, they rehearsed with Prince's band for a large portion of last week pre-show.

Have to say, I did have my doubts about their involvement when I first heard, as I've had enough of Prince and his overblown horn-sections to last me 2 lifetimes, and I was afraid it was just going to be a cheese-fest. But they really pulled it off, did both themselves and the little man proud, and they really helped make that performance something truly special.

Too bad Prince never wanted to play with us when I was in a marching band. Although even if he had, our director probably would have refused... he was a devout Christian who considered Prince, and I quote, "an evil demon."

(John Mellencamp saw us play, as he would attend football games at my high school, but he didn't ask to work with us either. That's okay... I don't care for most of his music.)
