Please tell me you don't actually believe that! lol

It was nothing more than a VFX cue.

Cool though, definately cool.

No man, watch it again. If you look really close you'll see a big thumbs up from the heavens. The stars made that symbol thingee shape for 5 seconds. You have to look really close. And drink a couple of beers as you look.

The whole set seemed rushed. The songs have become even more "show-tune"-like, and un-inspired. The Watchtower snippet stunk, and the Foo song blows in the first place.

On the plus-side, no one was burned to death when the Symbol stage went pyro.

I must admit - when the rain never stopped and, in fact, got heavier and heavier as the game went on, I thought, "Oh Lawd, Prince is not one to be getting wet! He's gonna use a tarp or something!" I was sooo happily wrong - he went out and funked up the place with one of the best half-time shows I've ever seen. I was so proud of the way he slayed the crowed and the television audience never giving a second thought to the downpour of rain. I turned up my 6 speaker surround sound to wall shaking volume and enjoyed myself... cursing the fact that I didn't have DVR to watch it over and over again (since corrected - thank u YouTube!).

From the setlist to The Twinz to the prince stage, I was in Purple heaven.

Prince - u r the greatest!

I don't know if the Minneapolis Star Tribune news article has been
printed anywhere yet, but here it is.....

Prince was the only Minnesota purple at Super Bowl
Jon Bream, Star Tribune

Well, at least one Minnesota institution associated with purple made it to the Super Bowl on Sunday.

Prince played the halftime show in rainy Miami wearing — surprise! — Miami Dolphins colors of orange and tourquoise. The purple part of his performance was the repertoire as he played three songs from “Purple Rain,” ending with the title tune on a stage shaped like the Prince glyph outlined in purple lights, with a marching band on the field sporting glow-in-the-dark purple on their uniforms and the star playing a purple glyph-shaped guitar.

“We were impressed that he didn’t have a tarp overhead; he actually played in the rain,” said longtime Minneapolis Prince fan Heidi Vader, who saw the Minnesota icon play on the openi! ng night of his new Las Vegas 3121 club in November. “It was fun to see him. He is smart in picking these kind of jobs like 'American Idol’ and this to expose himself to the general public. I wouldn’t have watched the Super Bowl otherwise. “My husband wanted the score to be 31-21 at halftime,” she continued, “and it might have been if not for the rain.”

Vader sighed that the song selection — including “Let’s Go Crazy” and “Baby, I’m a Star” — was predictable but she dug that Prince did what she called a Jimi Hendrix song. Indeed, his truncated take on “All Along the Watchtower” recalled Hendrix’s rather than the original rendition of its author, Bob Dylan.

In his 11 or 12 minutes onstage, Prince showed his unpredictable side as well by throwing in a little bit of Ike & Tina Turner’s “Proud Mary” and the Foo Fighters’ “The Best of You.”

“I was surprised that he did the Foo Fighters and it sounded much funkier and cool than their version,” said singer-songwriter Susan Sandberg, who splits her time between Los Angeles and St. Paul. From her seat in the 14th row at the 40-yard line at the Super Bowl, Sandberg said the football fans were singing along and “Prince was psyched to be there.”

In fact, it seemed like Prince, who showed plenty of guitar fireworks, was playing more to the stadium crowd than to the TV cameras.

At one point, he tossed off his black head kerchief. Was it a wardrobe malfunction? Well, the head protector was getting wet, and he had to play his guitar for “Purple Rain.”

“Don’t it feel good?” Prince declared as the rain, which had let up when he took the stage, began to fall again as if on a purple cue. Jon Bream • 612-673-1719

More Superbowl half-time Controversy

Anyone watch Countdown with Keith Olbermann? The show closed with a discussion of Prince's "getting away" with being dirty. Apparently, there's a small group of folks who think Prince's rendition of "Purple Rain" with Habibi and the silhouette was laced with sexual innuendo in the form of suggestive guitar posturing.

For one thing, Prince has pretty much used Habibi for all of his renditions of "Purple Rain" in the last few years. He didn't deliberately use that guitar to do something suggestive. And for another, Prince plays with his guitar in that position a lot (and he does so with the two other guitars he used in the set, as well). I think it's a coincidence that the camera angles caught what could be considered suggestive posturing, but I don't think it was intentional.

What y'all think?

And why would he get all sexual during "Purple Rain" of all songs? I could see if maybe he decided to do "Darling Nikki" again, but gettin' dirty in "Purple Rain"? That would be like putting on the assless yellow pants to do "Sometimes It Snows in April".

Somethoughts:

1) Did anyone catch that football game that happened during the Prince concert last night? - that was my favourite media quote of the day.

2) Did Prince overlook the obvious? I'm not usually one to second-guess a musical genius, but what was the name of the stadium? How crazy would football fans in Miami have gone if he were to sing "If I came back as a DOLPHIN"? He would be the President of Miami right now.

3) I really, really like Guitar.

4) I'm hoping to see that prince stage in person soon, bring it to the T-DOT.

5) Did Prince get introduced by Queen?

6) How'd they make the Purplelectricity? Did they get DJ doctor BAGGIE'S persmission first?

7) Is there a law that every journalist cover the Superbowl halftime has to devote a full paragraph to Janet Jackson's nipple?

7) Prince RULES!!!

You are SO RIGHT! I've been thinking about this all day. I know what the video looks like, but it was pure coincidence and yet it looked to the casual viewer very much like he planned it. This one will be a no win, except they'll be talking about him a lot more now.

Hmm. I still don’t think it was intentional. After being plagued with controversy over "nipple gate" and the "you make a dead man come" lyric from The Stones, I know the producers wanted to be 100% sure that the performance was totally clean. And when they hire a formally notoriously risque--now converted Jehovah’s Witness--to perform, I’m sure ethey impressed upon Prince the importance of keeping it clean.

And while this is the same guy who once paraded around in a g-string singing about oral sex, this is also the guy who, very recently, offered female strippers money if they would stop stripping.

Besides what Prince really needs is to make a good impression with this performance. The nipple thing certainly didn’t help Janet’s career, and any kind of negative controversy certainly wouldn’t help Prince’s currently modest sales. Hell, Prince himself even told EW in 2004 "after Janet, we’ve gone too far," or something to that effect.

Really, if this were a few years ago, and he had done the silhouette thing performing something other than "Purple Rain", I’d say Prince was being sly, but I just don’t think that’s the case here.

That person is on crack! I mean come on, look at the ratty, unfinished edges. Prince wouldn't wear put a rag on his royal hair! I bet this person saw Prince toss it, and thought, "I wonder how much a Prince fan would pay for that scarf? Hmmm...let's get a black rag, spritz it with hairspray, and find out!"

[Edited 2/5/07 13:03pm]

This looks ghetto--like someone went to Jo-Ann's, bought some cheap-ass black fabric, cut it with rusty shears, and tied it into a haphazard knot.

Also, if you go back and look at the pics, the one Prince was wearing definately had finished edges, and in some shots, it looks like the part that hangs from the knot in the front has some sort of sheer material in the middle. I could just be seeing things, though.

MY thoughts and MY opinions:

So what! Same ol same ol! I was bored to tears with Prince and his trite old Purple Rain anthem sad. I was disappointed. It wasn't long enough, I didnt like the same old boring usual songs he always plays. Seems like SOMETHING or SOMEONE was missing! Anyone else feel that way. Like after the performance was over, I still had an empty feeling sad, Prince didn't fulfill me sad. I was like "what is that all?!?!?" I'm STILL waiting on the high-light of the superbowl. I thought FOR SURE when they brought that curtain up and you could see Prince's shadow there, that some surprise guest would appear along side his shadow. Like you could see them walking up beside him ya know? Then the curtain would fall and we'd see who it was! That would have been the shit! Who he needed there, I don't know, just someone to get the show hype-y. Who do ya'll think should have been a surprise guest? Besides Vanity, I think we'd all had a heart attack and flopped over then! Even for her to say Prince's name I bet is a total sin for her now sad!

You wanna talk about a slammin' superbowl performance? Does the name Michael Jackson ring a bell? When was it, '91 or '92? Good God!! Remember the way he popped out of the stage? And then just stood there like a statue with those fly glasses on for like 15 minutes, then the crowd went wild and he turned it the other way and they went wild again. He carried this on for about the total time of Prince's whole performance LOL last night! Then he got down to business! And I can't remember what songs Michael did but his fantastic entrace will forever be embedded in my mind. I do remember the crowd being a part of it, and holding up signs? And at the end didn't he have kids on stage with him? Singing Heal the World? It's been forever since I watched it but now that was the Ultimate SuperBowl Performance that nobody has ever topped since, not even Janet's floppy boob LOL! That was a stunt and everyone knew it. I don't care what people say about Michael or his weird quirks but give credit where credit is due. I consider Michael more of an ENTERTAINER/PERFORMER and Prince is more ARTIST. Although he does entretain and entice too smile.

Also I loved Prince's Aunt Jemima he had going on, but I hated the orange/blue suit sad. He should loose those 2 twats, they are just anooying and take away from Prince's spotlight all with their crazy weaves flying everywhre and hoochie-coochie dance moves! Oh PUUUULEEEZE! Well I bet people used to say the same things about Mayte when they were together, but at least there were only 1 of her! He didn't do When Doves Cry what a damn shame! All that excitement and anticipation for nothing really, I could watch ANY Prince performance of him doing the exact same songs the exact same ways and got the exact same effect! Plus no dance moves, as usual! No surprises! No people from his past where there! I recorded it and it isn't worth putting on repeat that's for sure. Sorry Prince but you didn't fulfill me this time either sad. Though, nobody can re-capture their excitment as before at the peak of their career. AT LEAST HE IS STILL ALIVE AND TRYING!

THE END smile!!!!

Just got around to watching it.

LOVED IT. biggrin Total crackup, in a good way. "We're gonna blow some shit UP tonight! headbang " lol

It was like, "I got a BUDGET, those bitches are going to make me a giant neon prince stage. THINK THEY AIN'T?!"

That's what the commercial should have been.

Yeah, the song choices were kind of bah, but it's the Superbowl, not the ONA tour. The songs he did, he tore up, at least by that crowd's standards (we've all heard better versions of PR, but they were just happy to hear it).

And the sexy wet post-scarf hair bit will keep me up at night. I don't always think he's hot. That. That was hot. horny

Fun. smile

I'm just posting here to say how much I hate these damn stickies.
This system doesn't encourage fine points of discussion, just general spewing.

A thread was locked about the lightning and how it seemed a part of Prince's show but was really "from the Heavens." And you know, I thought while watching the show ... is that fake lightning or real ...because it was perfect ... but that thread was locked and the poster sent here to the garbage umbrella thread.

Then, another person tried to ask did we hear PRince on the radio since the superbowl. That was locked too. I'd like to know.

I was going to ask if everyone saw the article on how Prince's sales at Amazon.com had skyrocketed, but of course that would just be locked and sent here too.

But you know I don't feel like really 1,588 reponses on a sticky to see if that's been mentioned. Esp. since this part doesn't even have the feature of taking members to the last read post.

I really miss the days of org conversations, where big topics could be broken into finer strains of thought. Sticky, dump threads are counter to the instincts of conversation. People just come ...dump and go.

I'm sure this post will go too. neutral

Then I thought about 40.000 people in Miami at The Super Bowl singing along to the end of Purple Rain...

Ok, now here is my serious post.
So I spent a long time on Youtube today defending the whole pre-recorded thing. But something I just saw literally made me sick to my stomach! At the part in The Best Of U right before his guitar solo when he grabs the mic and screams; two LOUD palm mutes come across on the speakers while he still has both hands on the mic and is still screaming! eek confused

Look, everything else points to it being live; the few bum notes in PR, not getting back to the mic on the first solo from LGC, the wireless going out at the end of PR! It all adds up to it being live except for that one part! Did he sing live but pre-record the guitar parts? I really don't want to think so and I hope not. But that one second has me really wondering!

As far as I can tell my downloaded version's sound is in sync with the video. Please someone tell me I have a bad version or somehting, anything that makes sense! I don't think he would do that, especially on something as big as the Super Bowl! But as much as a control freak and perfectionist that he is he just might do it. But then why recorded sloppy solos? I mean the feeling was there but by far not his most technically proficient performance. But who would expect that live in the pouring rain? Or was it live? I have to go search out other versions now hoping that mine has been tampered with! pray

Please someone tell me I am wrong! sad

The Stickys just make it too much to read and you have to sift through
way too many topics about one subject.
I just tried to post a comment about Lettermen and Leno Dissing Prince and it was locked..... they said it belonged here.. but THIS is suppose to be about his performance and stuff at the Super bowl.. now about Talk shows..
