In terms of sheer performance value, this was the best halftime show I can remember seeing. Miles away from what they're offered in recent years.
The medley was standard, but enjoyable, especially since Prince is one of the few legends who hasn't yet worn out his catalogue with tons of high-profile medley shows.
I admit I was as little afaid for him with those shoes. High heels + wet stage usually means disaster, but he didn't skid once lol
I *loved* the finale. Leave it to prince to coreograph the weather...
Michael never stopped!

That person is on crack! I mean come on, look at the ratty, unfinished edges. Prince wouldn't wear put a rag on his royal hair! I bet this person saw Prince toss it, and thought, "I wonder how much a Prince fan would pay for that scarf? Hmmm...let's get a black rag, spritz it with hairspray, and find out!"

[Edited 2/5/07 13:03pm]

This looks ghetto--like someone went to Jo-Ann's, bought some cheap-ass black fabric, cut it with rusty shears, and tied it into a haphazard knot.

Also, if you go back and look at the pics, the one Prince was wearing definately had finished edges, and in some shots, it looks like the part that hangs from the knot in the front has some sort of sheer material in the middle. I could just be seeing things, though.
[Edited 2/5/07 20:44pm]

It looks like people are bidding on it anyway. Just look at the difference. The one on Prince's head is hemmed, looks sheer, and maybe even a little stretchy. This seller is a con artist. Do you think I should report them to ebay?

^ I just sent the seller a little note with a link to this picture. I said that it's funny how that rag doesn't look anything like the scarf Prince is actually wearing. How odd... confused

Oh, and it looks like there is some serious shill bidding going on too! What a creep!

From ESPN today:

Halftime Show
Started ominously, with CBS adding fake lightning to an actual rainstorm. Next came fireworks, followed by David Caruso casually strolling away from the inferno while adjusting the fit of his sunglasses. The good news? Prince still rocks -- so hard, in fact, that he can play electric guitar in the rain, without a single stream of mascara running down his cheek.

Likely thanks to Janet Jackson, his backup dancers wore more clothes than you would ever expect at a Prince show, or even a monastery. Still, the marching bands were a nice, surprisingly well-integrated touch. It's also good to know that if North Korea launches a surprise ballistic missile attack, Prince's laser lights should be able to shoot down any incoming warheads -- a capability NORAD has lacked since Pink Floyd stopped touring.

A thread was locked about the lightning and how it seemed a part of Prince's show but was really "from the Heavens." And you know, I thought while watching the show ... is that fake lightning or real ...because it was perfect ... but that thread was locked and the poster sent here to the garbage umbrella thread.

Then, another person tried to ask did we hear PRince on the radio since the superbowl. That was locked too. I'd like to know.

I was going to ask if everyone saw the article on how Prince's sales at Amazon.com had skyrocketed, but of course that would just be locked and sent here too.

But you know I don't feel like really 1,588 reponses on a sticky to see if that's been mentioned. Esp. since this part doesn't even have the feature of taking members to the last read post.

I really miss the days of org conversations, where big topics could be broken into finer strains of thought. Sticky, dump threads are counter to the instincts of conversation. People just come ...dump and go.

I agree with you! Even threads with the mention of the word "Superbowl" great ddetoured over here, where nobody's seriously gonna read all 500 some posts lol

Also...I don't know who is bidding on the doo-rag on Ebay, but you guys have gotta stop! lol lol

Super Bowl halftime buzz follows Prince to Amazon

BYLINE: Mercury News wire services

Prince's rain-drenched halftime performance at the Super Bowl Sunday night set his album sales sprouting like Jack's beanstalk, Amazon.com reports.
The halftime show, which in recent years has helped the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, and even the malfunctioning Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson to mighty sales increases, was a profitable stage for Prince.

"The Very Best of Prince'' shot from No. 710 to No. 71 on Amazon.com's Top Sellers list for music, according to Amazon.

Sales of ``The Hits/The B-Sides'' increased by a super 887 percent, climbing from No. 2,211 all the way to No. 224 among Amazon.com's top sellers.
Prince's finale, ``Purple Rain'' propelled sales of the album ``Music From the Motion Picture `Purple Rain' '' from No. 432 to No. 53 on the Amazon list, a leap of 715 percent.

"Ultimate Prince'' rose from No. 516 to No. 82 and ``3121`` climbed from No. 488 to No. 145 in sales on Amazon.

Overall, Prince's average album sales on Amazon went up 653 percent.

You're wrong.

Prince is one of the few artists that goes out of his way to champion the LIVE performance. Often putting out press releases and general statements or references such as to "goin' back to school" and "musicology". For those who do pre-record, he has slammed them time and again.

For this master musician to fall back and allow pre-recording of any of his performance is so not Prince.

People need to either recognize his brilliance in performing and his perfectionism in his guitar mastering... even though he slipped a couple times during the performance, I challenge anyone to mention a better live performance under the conditions that Prince played in.

To put it bluntly: He fucking rocked the stadium better than anyone. period. People can't fault his performance, so they question his abilities. It's getting old.

Prince outplayed, outperformed and outfunked everyone. Prince - nothing compares 2 u. nod

I side with you June7 on this one!

I actually overheard people talking about Prince's performance when I went out to dinner last night!

My boyfriend and I were sitting in the bar at a Mexican restaurant, when KISS suddenly started playing. I was super excited to hear the song, but even more excited to hear a man sitting a few feet from me tell his date, "Prince played the Super Bowl halftime show you know." Much to my boyfriend's dismay, I just HAD to eavesdrop. The lady said, "Oh, I didn't know that." The man (who looked to be about Prince's age) then said, "Yeah, it was really good. He's got to be about 50 by now, but he doesn't look it. Well, you know, black people don't show their age as much." lol

I tried so hard not to laugh. I listened a little more, but only heard little snippets of the guy talking about Prince's dancing, and his lady was groovin' to the music. I had a big smile on my face after that. biggrin

I agree as well. I would've loved to've heard more discussion on many of those locked threads. I have my own questions to ask, but I'm not going to do it here. All is lost in these humongous piles of sticky posts. I guess we'll have to wait before we can move on to the specifics, eh?

these days prince org sometimes doesn't function as an informative message board because of the thread combination,it's more of a public wall when a big event happens. But..... there is housquake.com to try to see if you can get a decent specific topic going. It works there sometimes when things are lost here.

Well, you were wrong there then weren't you? Even though it should be discussed in site discussion, but I can't be bothered to repeat myself over and over again to those who don't listen, it's just a waste of my time.

But here's the final word on the matter: whenever there is a major 'event', a major 'happening' in the Prince camp, and site traffic is certain to increase beyond what we as moderators can handle, the stickys will remain. So, best get used to it.

Not to mention that the majority of people find/found them helpful rather than having to sift through '1,588' threads on the forum (the majority of which are always duplicates of other threads because y'all too damned lazy to look before you leap).

Our time is valuable too - and it would be nice to think that most orgers would appreciate that an innordinatly large proportion of our spare time is spent here trying our best to keep this site running as smoothly as possible for your benefit with little or no thanks. And no, I'm not playing the martyr here, I just think it's about time a certain sector of this site stopped thinking of themselves and started thinking of others once in awhile... flyingpig

We asked Orgers to 'help us - to help you'...thankfully most did.

To those that towed the line, bit their lip and mucked in with the rest of us, thankyou, every little bit helped.

Hey, it's not a perfect system, but at times like this past weekend it's all we've got and I'll be damned if we have to keep apologising for it.

I thought Prince did an amazing job with the Super Bowl, especially with the weather conditions. He did seem slightly stiff in the beginning of Let's Go Crazy but once he started moving, then it was on. I didn't know what to expect when I heard that he was going to have have that FAMU marching band play with him but they added a new element to Baby I'm a Star and Purple Rain. I got happy when he mixed Proud Mary with Baby I'm a Star. It was totally out of left field and that was great. When I heard the first note from All Along the Watchtower/Best Of You, I knew it was gonna be hot and poppin and it was. And when it ended with Purple Rain, it was like climax for me. The rain which freaked me out up until the start of the show winded up being a beautiful part of the performance. It was as surreal as it could get seeing him sing PR in the rain. That silhouette behind him with the wind was too much for me. It was one of the best TV moments I've ever seen from Prince and it made me so proud to be a fan of his.

Top it off, I had a couple of people call me and told me they were impressed by the performance. My mom who hasn't been into P since the PR days was impressed too. If anyone didn't see how great P was on Sunday then they are truly a sad case and a hot mess that I'm glad I'm not a part of. All I know is that I'm so glad to have watch Prince become a part of history! Prince is the king PERIOD.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

So I spent a long time on Youtube today defending the whole pre-recorded thing. But something I just saw literally made me sick to my stomach! At the part in The Best Of U right before his guitar solo when he grabs the mic and screams; two LOUD palm mutes come across on the speakers while he still has both hands on the mic and is still screaming! eek confused

Look, everything else points to it being live; the few bum notes in PR, not getting back to the mic on the first solo from LGC, the wireless going out at the end of PR! It all adds up to it being live except for that one part! Did he sing live but pre-record the guitar parts? I really don't want to think so and I hope not. But that one second has me really wondering!

As far as I can tell my downloaded version's sound is in sync with the video. Please someone tell me I have a bad version or somehting, anything that makes sense! I don't think he would do that, especially on something as big as the Super Bowl! But as much as a control freak and perfectionist that he is he just might do it. But then why recorded sloppy solos? I mean the feeling was there but by far not his most technically proficient performance. But who would expect that live in the pouring rain? Or was it live? I have to go search out other versions now hoping that mine has been tampered with! pray

Please someone tell me I am wrong! sad

If you listen to the performance again, I think you'll find that what you heard was delay from the stadiums PA - as ads and info kept being relayed over the pitch PA throughout Prince's performance - this can be heard occasionally in the performance, but not so much as to be distracting thankfully - God only knows how he managed though. The delay from the stadium PA can be heard quite clearly at the beginning of 'Purple Rain'.

Right, it amazes me that anyone would think for a second that Prince's vocals and guitar playing weren't live. If he pre-recorded his guitar then not only did he leave in bum notes, open strings sounding and other noises but he managed to mime the exact fingering (including mistakes) throughout the whole performance. Trsut me, he played live.

From what I heard the band, at least the drums, were live too since there was a mistake by the drummer at the start of purple rain. As for the wooooh hooo hooo hoooos during PR, they did sound a little too good to be just the crowd singing along spontaneously, Probably some group (maybe the marching band?) on the field or somewhere that had rehearsed singing that part just in case the crowd didnt join in. Nothing worse than yelling "sing it ya'll!!" with your arms raised to the heavens only to hear crickets.

I can only assume that people are so used to lip syncing these days that they dont know what a real live performance looks or sounds like.

Amen to that!

Yeah, the coda fills were played by The FAMU Marching 100, and they did a stellar job. Apparently, they rehearsed with Prince's band for a large portion of last week pre-show.

Have to say, I did have my doubts about their involvement when I first heard, as I've had enough of Prince and his overblown horn-sections to last me 2 lifetimes, and I was afraid it was just going to be a cheese-fest. But they really pulled it off, did both themselves and the little man proud, and they really helped make that performance something truly special.

More Superbowl half-time Controversy

Anyone watch Countdown with Keith Olbermann? The show closed with a discussion of Prince's "getting away" with being dirty.

I saw that last night and thought it was the most rediculous thing I've ever heard. I've seen Prince play his guitar like that a thousand times, just not behind a sheet. Their arguement was that he switched to that particular guitar when he did "Purple Rain". Hell, he switched guitars three times and the other two guitars would look much more like a dick behind the curtain than the one he used.

Then Michael Musto went on to say "We all know Prince is dirty and I love him for it" and went on to quote lyrics from over 20 years ago. If he and the rest of the staff had been following Prince's career over the years and covering it as much as they cover shit hop, they would know that Prince is not only a Jehovah's Witness now but damn near obsessed with being one at times.

Michael Musto is just upset that there is no scandal like the one after Janet Jackson's performance so they would have something to talk about for months. Now he trying to create a scandal out of nothing. What pissed me off is when he compared Prince to Janet Jackson. He said it's so much a man's world that a man can walk around with his phallus out and a woman gets scorned for accidentally showing her breast for a split second. Now he should know as a gay man that is a damn lie. Go to any R Rated movie and all you see is titties, titties, titties. Show just a tiny glimpse of a dick and they try to slap an X rating on it. I can't stand for someone to lie like that, especially somebody that knows better.

More people just trying to make something out of nothing. I've been reading about this on a lot of websites, so the stupidity is spreading. rolleyes
