Prince hasn't made me grin that silly grin of "wooooow" in many years but today I'm still grinning... Prince, I promise not to pick on you for a good while.
I'd take a 15 rocking show like that over 3 hours of horns and jazz ANY time and if I'd had the dough I'd GLADLY go to Vegas for that 15 min show. That's how impressed I was, and am. Even a friend of mine who hates his guts told me he got goosebumps from his guitar playing. Prince, once again you have kicked my ass.

Prince saves the day: Ho-hum commercials and hours of pregame blather pave the way for halftime heroics
BYLINE: Julie Hinds, Detroit Free Press SECTION: LIFESTYLE Feb. 5--There was something soggy about Sunday night's Super Bowl as a viewing experience, and not just because of the weather. The action on the field was exciting, but there wasn't much sizzle to the spectacle surrounding the game. The commercials didn't provoke as many laughs or oh-no-they-didn't moments as usual. The pregame coverage dragged on for hours. On the plus side, Prince livened things up with a halftime show as powerful as it was energetic. Almost daring the elements to stop him, the drenched superstar got the entire stadium rocking with his closing rendition of "Purple Rain." Talk about the right song for the right conditions. For metro Detroit viewers, of course, nothing would have been as exciting as last year, when the Super Bowl was in our own backyard. And to be fair, there were highlights other than Prince, like the people power of the Doritos make-a-commercial contest and the creepy-cool Super Bowl tie-in to the "Criminal Minds" postgame episode. Otherwise, it was one of those years where you wanted the filler stuff to end so you could watch the football, rather than the other way around. What happened over the span of the evening? Let's relive the middling magic. Wearing a turquoise suit and a black scarf around his head, Prince made his entrance in a blaze of fireworks and commanded a platform shaped like his trademark symbol. "Are y'all ready to get nuts tonight?" he asked, blazing through "Let's Go Crazy." There was added drama as he busted his moves while avoiding wiping out on the rain-slick stage. --The gotta-love-it Prince moment? When he tossed off his scarf, finally sacrificing his hair during "Purple Rain." Suggestion for next year? Have Prince play at all key events. He's done "American Idol" and the Super Bowl. Next, put him in during the State of the Union address and the national spelling bee. --Random thought induced by the weather: If you had a dollar for every water spot seen on a camera lens Sunday night, you'd probably have enough for an NFL-sized paycheck. --Back to Prince. Did you notice the marching band that backed him up on the field? It was Florida A & M's Marching 100.

God Bless him! Most people would have cancelled due to the weather.
I think God was digging it too because he provided lighting and special effects. You can't ask for a more kewl image than playing "Purple Rain" in the rain. As a guitar player I sure wouldn't want to be playing my ax in the rain so for that alone he deserves a Medal Of Honor. As Peter Griffith would say: "Prince is da freakin'man!" Didn't even know until today that it was the first Superbowl ever played in the rain, so it was perfect for him to end with Purple Rain for that reason alone. And really, it can't be easy to perform in those conditions for anyone- but some, like the Stones, Bon Jovi, etc. are used to it since their tours always include some stadiums. Anyone know the last time Prince played in the rain?? I'm not even clear on which was his last tour to include any stadiums....88-89?? The man probably hasn't even felt rain in years , jk...sort of
I do hope he gets to keep the stage too!! He must have room to store it somewhere in MN, no? I saw him in Milwaukee at an outdoor venue during Summerfest, but he of course was under cover A prince never lacks legitimate reasons to break his promise.

The following is my off-the-cuff response to the handful of goons on CNN.com. Since the mods didn't post it there, I figure I'd post it here.
Prince put on an amazing performance. Possibly, the best Superbowl performance to date, hands down. I don't understand all the criticism. What does Prince have to do to finally get credit for being a brilliant guitar master? As for the comments that he wasn't really playing, I assure you he was. I've seen Prince live several times, and there's no need for him to rely on prerecorded guitar solos. NO, you don't have to have your hands on the strings at all times to really play. As was pointed out before, when Prince's right hand wasn't on the strings, he was soloing with the left. Anyone who knows anything about playing guitar is familiar with this technique. Prince does this all the time. I've even seen him play guitar with his left hand while playing piano with his right hand simultaneously. And you could hear the distortion and reverb from the guitars, so they were most definitely on. Also, Prince uses battery-powered wireless transmitters on his instruments, so he doesn't need to be plugged into an amp, and there's little, if any, risk of electrocution from his playing guitar live in the rain. As for those who tuned out during the halftime show because Prince is "nasty", maybe you're not aware that Prince is now devoutly religious and doesn't perform much of the salacious material from his past. Pity you turned off your TV--you really missed out. Think Prince hasn't had an album out in 20 years? Well, I suppose last year's "3121" which debuted at number one doesn't count--nor do the countless albums he's released almost every year since 1987, some of which have been sprawling, muti-disc affairs. I've read comments on other message boards, and they're overwhelmingly positive. Some of the negative reviews are tempered with juvenile comments like, "Prince is gay," and "That little elf sucks". Some people are so prejudiced against Prince that they can't suspend their preconceived notions and admit that he puts on a great show. The sad thing is that Prince is one of the few musical geniuses we have left in a music industry that is in such a glut for talent that it allows the likes of Paris Hilton to put out an "album". Sorry. The Stones were sloppy and unprofessional. Paul McCartney was a bore. You folks can go watch those half-time performances to your heart's content. I'll be busy wearing out my DVD of Prince's phenomenal set. [Edited 2/5/07 15:18pm] "I Was FINE Back in the Day!"

Once again with feeling, the lightning effect was a visual effect on top of the tv pictures, not real.
Believe it or not, there are people out there who believe that Prince was miming the performance to a pre-recorded tape - huh?! I suppose he pre-recorded not getting back to the mic in time to sing some lyrics too, then, and pre-recorded some blurry notes on guitar for realistic effect... People criticise him for playing his big hits all the time. Let's Go Crazy is just one of the greatest opener songs ever made, just think of all the acts and bands that would love a song like this to kick off concerts with, and here we are moaning. Baby I'm A Star wasn't even a single, was it? It's actually just an album track, a famous album track for hard-core fans, but still just an album track. It seems somewhat strange the extent people are raving about the Purple Rain finale, when I would say he has played far better versions. It always feels rushed to me when he truncates it so much; more so this time because the radio signal from the guitar or something gave out after he knocked his mic over and you could barely hear his final notes, and even if you had he ended it very abruptly for a song which just transcends the longer it goes on. Yes, there was the rain and occasion which gave it a lot of atmosphere, but give me the the old '85 AMA version or the one played at the Brits anytime. Still, it is hard to think of any acts these days who could both sing as well as Prince in front of such a huge audience never mind play half-a-doxen guitar solos the likes of which would put a grin on any rock fan's face.

There is two ways to look at the performance yesterday from a longtime fan perspective and from the POV of never seein him before.
From the POV of never seeing him before I'm sure that performance generated some new fans and made some unbelievers into fans. The show was flashing quick and to the point, however from a long time fans perspective the newest song he played was Purple Rain, the cover tunes don't count. It was an excellent performance of the same old tired songs that were supposed to never be played after the Musicology tour. It was a good performance for the pouring rain. So if you have never seen him before I'm sure for you it was the bomb, but if you have seen him as many times as I have you were waiting for the 3rd quarter. 23 more days to Ball Dangle Day!!!!!

Just sharing my opinion...
First and Foremost, Most people won't even go out in the "natural" rain, let alone stand in it with electricity bouncing in every direction like the center of the sun! I will tell you that it was a spectacular and never-forgetting show... Prince displayed what I call... Well, Queen (my ultimate band) wrote a song about it.. "Show must go on!"... No matter what he went out there and played his heart out for everybody. It takes alot to go out no matter what for people, even if you don't feel like it or inclimate weather... Applause to the entire Band, Prince, Staff and MARCHING 100!(edited for their addition too) for putting on the "greatest show on earth" on 02/04/2007 at the Superbowl. WHAT A MAGIKAL NIGHT IT WAS Thank you and GODBLISS, SM! [Edited 2/5/07 20:53pm]

Maybe people are speculating his performance was pre-recording/lip synched because that's the kind of crap mainstream American is used to from so-called "musicians". "Why are his fingers moving on the fretboard? That scream sounds exactly like on the cd...it must be a backing track!."
Fools... and even though the Org has (had) it's share of race disputes and heated debates, compared to some of the ignorant jackasses on the other sites we are the Rainbow Coalition! The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

The Tom Joyner Morning Show said P was the mvp. They're right. But thats his bread and butter. Hes at his best when the odds are most stacked against him and he gets off on making lemonade. Thats the recurrent theme throughout his career. I swear, this cat is my main apple scrapple. I listened to people of all ages races, creeds and colors all day at work raving about how good he was. Think I'll cue up The Max and seriously look into this Vegas thang. Thanx P
