I write this in a state of dismay. I NEVER thought that I would be writing a story about Prince possible stealing/borrowing/sampling someone else's work. I was listening to Eddie Hazel's "Frantic Moment" from his 1977 album release of Games, Dames and Guitar Thangs and that track just BLEW me away. Parts of the songs is the music and melody from Prince's "Do me baby" song. It's been 2 days and I still can't believe it. Please find this track and tell me that I'm wrong. Please. -Mg

Graycap, I have not listened to this song so I can't comment on it specifically. But let me tell you I'd not be surprised. sad

I had a thread last year that I think was entitled "Prince is not as original as I thought." So many stolen concepts. It was bashed horribly, of course. lol

I was devastated to consider all the alleged rip-offs together at one time. It's hard to dismiss.

BUT for my enjoyment and love of Prince, I had to put my illusions behind me so I can just enjoy Prince as a musical force. But it does appear that lifting is a method of operation, whether consciously or subconsciously. It hurts me to admit it, but how many coincidence can one be allowed.

People have told me, well ...all artists capitalize on what went before. Perhaps there's truth in that.

He has introduced so much unique stuff to the musical landscape, that I call it all even.

As far back as I can remember Prince has always " Listened Carefully" aka: Sponge, during his Jam Sessions. That's why he has them !...Example.."Kiss".... He also got "PartyUp" from Morris Day,then helped him put "The Time" together in exchange. We don't always know the details But from what I understand Prince has given $$$$$ and some credit when he felt it was the right.thing 2 do...And Remember all the songs he has GIVEN 2 other Artists 2 boost their careers.

I dig. As a musician myself I understand that it's damn near impossible to create something totally original because damn near every note combination possible has been recorded by someone at sometime. I guess it just caught me off guard because it was so totally unexpected. It's damn near impossible to slip this type of stuff pass me because I listen to and own so much music. I never knew that Hazel came out with his own album otherwise I would have caught this years ago. I only listen to the Hazel track Friday.

These young cats in the musis biz seem to ONLY redo music. It's almost like they can't create anything original which is pretty sad. If it is not sampled outright, it's just derivative as hell. That's why I listen to a lot of old stuff because the new stuff is mostly lame. Don't get me wrong, there is a few creative cats out there but it's a 1000 to 1 ratio. -Mg

I find it ironic that prince stole a song that was stolen from someone else, yet he probably doesn't know it.

Let's not forget the Prince written lyrics and vocals which make this such a great song, whether or not Andre Cymone came up with the bass riff or not, or if he got it from Eddie Hazel, Prince still did co write this song at the very least.

I agree, it's all good. I was just shocked when I heard "do me baby" in the middle of a Hazel track. I damn near crashed on I-285 freeway. -Mg

You hear different pieces of tracks used all over the place. That's just a part of the usual business practices of making music, but to hear what is the basic structure of the song that is all together another story. The liner notes for Do Me Baby says written, produced, and arranged by Prince. Dig?

I hear ya...I make my living as a musician...and i understand....I guess i was looking for prince to be copying sly for years ..and i saw various little things...the tele...the clothes..the band...ect...but that horn riff said it all to me....cause thats not even the obvious sly...its kinda obscure....anyways...god bless him...

I can hear the similarities in the melody of the two songs aand the latter one was more than likely influenced by the former but it's not identical by any means.

It actually sounds more like Tupac's California Love Remix, which samples Do Me Baby.

Get Eddie's song and listen to it: it's note for note.

If Prince got the track from Cymone then it's Cymone that "borrowed" the music from Eddie Hazel. If that is the case, I feel better already. I just can't believe that Prince would use someone else's work like that. Thanks, I did not know that Prince got the song from Cymone.-Mg

dont feel so happy yet, lol, havent read the whole thread but just wanted to say that i just got done listenin and i see what u mean, not identical but similar. so if prince took the song from andre prince is still at fault cuz we ALL know how much of a pfunk freak he is and i'm pretty sure if andre heard the hazel record p heard it too

Oh really? Well I'll have to pull Andre's "AC" album when I get home but I do believe that Prince is listed on it.

-----
Well if P is mentioned on the record as the writer than Andre could have turned the song down. After all he is the one that goes around bitching about how he could have done this or that if P had not stolen this song from him.

Andre could have just not worked with P ever again in life but he did. So my guess is he was not that upset about it and he needs to stop bitching and get over it.

He had his chance with Jodi Watley and he fucked that up by all accounts.

Anyway it is Andre's word agaist P since know one else has backed up the story.

Who the heck cares! No offense. This was 30 years ago. IF it was so much of abig deal, people would have been protesting and crying about it then, not now. Quite frankly, I am in Prince's cornerl he wrote it, he got the cred, and I really do not care what AC or Eddie said.

You can here a sample of it by clicking the link below. Scroll down to the track listing and click the little hand to the left of the song. you need to have quick time. From what little bit I heard, I don't hear anything that sounds like do me, baby.

What we do know is that Andre has been beefing about this tune for over 25 years. Nevermind that he did not write Dance Electric but he did not have any trouble going along with the public thinking he wrote it back in "85"

Wrong.I have Andre's album and the song "Dance Electric" is credited as a Prince-written track.Even Wendy and Lisa's background vocals are credited. In interviews fromn this period,Andre clearly stated that Prince wrote it.

I could imagine they were jamming on Frantic Moment and adapted it for Do Me Baby. I doubt it's so blatant as to infringe copywrite though. Afterall Eddie didn't die til 1992 and would have surely raised the issue.

I can't work out how to download from here. (found it - it was hdden by an ad! - edit)

the snippet I heard on another link definitely resembles DMB, but I also think that it's different enuff for it to be "influence" rather than theft (no vanilla Ice or Sussudio here!)

could be... when you hear prince doing piano arrangements of say... Strange Relationship, can you hear that it is the same song? (without the words!)... actually that one is so different that it IS different.... a lot of his live ones are sped up and not exactly identical just like this "Do me Baby" percussor ditty.

they also say" prince did not write or give proper credit for:

"baby", "my love is forever" (basicaly everything on the orginal demos), And he also took "uptown" from I FORGET. but yeah he did not write all of "do me baby."

And even in 87 he won a law suit over "U got the look" which was said he stole from his sister. (her song "what's cooking in your book" was IIRC changed just enough for prince to win in court. but given that he had hard it, i think that he took it)

also "strolling" was very close to a song called "rollin" (or something like that)

Trading "Do me Baby" for "dance electric" sounds like the Louisiana Purchase! SOMETHING for nothing.
