You've got to find it. It is a little more significant than "Do Me Baby" and a more obvious rip off as far as I'm concerned.

My dumbass post and your dumbass...sounds like a match made in heaven. I dont like the fact that you copied Michael Jordan's number 23 in your screen name. Same difference...dont sweat the little shit!!! Enjoy the fact that music will be music, regardless of where it comes from. A grown-ass man being DISMAYED over this is very pussyish. How do you know Mr. Incredulous, that Prince stole this from Mr. Hazel?? YOU DONT...so like I said , move on and stop your BITCH-ASS whining!!! BTW: it should be "IS that better?...dont shake so much when you type your response BIG guy.

and you feel threatened by my post.....you need help my brutha!!! My original post only points out the fact that you would be DISMAYED by this. YOU took it out of context that I was personally attacking you for thinking that way. If it busted your Prince bubble that two songs could be of the same chord and melody, I would say that you should get out of the house more. If you and your music buddies found time in a busy day to compare and accuse an artist for what HE might have done....than again, you must have ALOT of meaningless time on your hands, to even worry about this. Thats all...didnt mean to rub you the wrong way.....and now clones, back to the most meaningless post on here in the new year...carry on!!!

Someone orged me telling me to get over to this post and get busy. Dig, many folks on here knows that I've done session work with playing lead guitar on some things with Mr. Cymone back in 95. One of them including a session with Mr. Morris Day. Anyway, during this session, while I was cuting my solo on this Morris track, Andre said how much my playing reminded him of Eddie Hazel. He said that Hazel was one of his AND P's favorite guitarist and that they used to wear out Hazel's solo album in the 70's. Anyway, it's no secret that P took Andre's song "Do Me, Baby". I heard it from the horse's mouth. Hazel is a main influence of mine, and I too have long since noticed the bite from "Frantic Moment". There's no doubt in my brain that Andre lifted from Frantic Moment in Do Me, Baby. I wrote a thread about this very song a long time ago over in the Non Music forum.

That really doesn't surprise me at all. It seems like 95% of the stuff in the 50/60's all sound damn near just a like. You almost can't tell one track from another from back in those days. The crunk music from Lil Jon and others all seem to use the same tracks from today's music. I guess the more things change the more they remain the same. -Mg

okay, i heard it, but actually I'm still more surprised by Do Me Baby sounding like something because that is more of a song, song,

This one (are we keeping it a secret?) always did sound like a typical old fashioned blues/r&B song that was just redone with some crazy electro minimalism.

Yeah, but Kiss was one of his biggest songs and this Helene Smith tune shares more than a passing reference.

I write this in a state of dismay. I NEVER thought that I would be writing a story about Prince possible stealing/borrowing/sampling someone else's work. I was listening to Eddie Hazel's "Frantic Moment" from his 1977 album release of Games, Dames and Guitar Thangs and that track just BLEW me away. Parts of the songs is the music and melody from Prince's "Do me baby" song. It's been 2 days and I still can't believe it. Please find this track and tell me that I'm wrong. Please. -Mg

I'm not surprised. Prince has many influences P-Funk being a heavy one like James Brown. America has a James Brown/Funkadelic bite. If I Was Your Girlfriend is a direct lift from a Mtume song. The beginning of Fury is a lift from a Funkadelic tune. Only surprise is to people with limited music knowledge.

I have not listened to Frantic Moment to compare although I do own the lp. Memory serves me it is not note for note but I'll have to go back to take a listen.

You didn't here ANY similarity? Obviously it sounds like JB what funk doesn't owe somethng to JB?

oh the joys of dealing with the Prince:Music and More forum.....the extreme fanatics who feel as though Prince can do no wrong lol It's seriously why a lot of people don't even post here anymore, because they refuse to accept any negative criticism against Prince and can't debate like people with common sense.

I agree. that's basically why I've almost NEVER posted here until this past week. I've been around for about 13 years on the PPML, amp, etc and i just stopped posting. Way too much drama. -Mg

Whoa! That IS scary! I can see the feel that both are derivative of Papa's Got a Brand New Bag (tho I never thought of that re Kiss b4!), but this is mighty close. OTOH, I would still say it's probably sub-conscious and not a deliberate rip.

It's actually cool to check out the connections. The thing is, black music and culture, and funk in particular is and has always been about intertextual connections, not about originality. I remember Billy whatever-his-name-is from the Smashing Pumpkuns complaining how everyone said he was trying to sound like Pink Floyd. He said that he had just seen Prince play in Minneapolis and that Prince wears his influences on his sleeve. He was saying that for Prince it's a compliment and an aim to say that he sounds like Sly, JB, GC, SW, Hendrix etc. He used the expression standing on the shoulders of giants or something.

I think that hits the nail on the head - originality is in what you do with your influences, not in trying to sound like your mothership just landed from the pyramids (or maybe it is!)

Kiss is a deliberate tribute to the pioneering funk of JB. No one could hear the "turn around" in Kiss and not think of James. Prince was updating the sound with his distinctive cleverness.

Prince has enough original material to put most artists to shame so it's all good far as I'm concerned.
