yeah it is a bit like Bugs Bunny... but i have to say this story is not NEW I heard about it years ago. And we know in 87 he got sued (even if he did win) so really who KNOWS? it is intresting: if AC would have done it... would it be a classic? i doubt it. also who knows what the band contract was: it may well have said "anything created by the band belongs to Prince" (sort of a work for hire deal? like if invent something at work (and it is linked to your job) it really belongs to the company.

Well if P is mentioned on the record as the writer than Andre could have turned the song down. After all he is the one that goes around bitching about how he could have done this or that if P had not stolen this song from him.

Andre not turning down the song is the same as Prince not turning down performing with Beyonce at the Grammys, which you see nothing wrong with even though Prince continuously bitches about the current state of music.

Prince had just finished "Purple Rain", his name was hot, and the song got Andre more exposure than he had with his first two albums.

He had his chance with Jodi Watley and he fucked that up by all accounts.

He sure did have his chance with Jody Watley and was extremely successful with it. Her first album was getting much more airplay and was on much more people's lips than Prince's "Sign O The Times" (album and movie) which was out during that time. If I remember correctly, I think there were about 15 people in the movie theater when the film premiered. lol

I can hear the similarities in the melody of the two songs aand the latter one was more than likely influenced by the former but it's not identical by any means.

It actually sounds more like Tupac's California Love Remix, which samples Do Me Baby.

I agree. I still do not hear a "note for note" grab from this song. Call me tone deaf or whatever, but I've heard melodies that are clearly lifted from other songs in the past(not Prince songs). But I just don't hear it here.

Similarities? Definitely.

Hi Gray, I agree with you, about the two songs being similar in progression and melody.
But can i say that there are far more Blatant examples out there.

The similarities between 'The Question of U' and a certain song from the 1950,s
blows your example out of the water!, but you will have to take my word for that. wink

The Question of U is one of my all time fav tracks ever. I can't believe anyone in the 50's could even come up with a track like that. Please tell me the name of that song. I can get my hands on that track within a day if it exist. -Mg

Well, the song frantic moment is all over limewire you have to search just the title of the song. If you put the artist name in (Ediie Hazel) it won't come up. I got the whole thing and I just don't hear it.

Prince wrote like what, 2000+ songs. Did you actually think every single one came out of some sort of musical vacuum and that he had never been influenced by other artists. Give the guy a break he was a kid, it was 25 years ago.

From my perspective this IS NOT about who got the credit. First of all, I'll bet 99% of the people on this post NEVER heard Eddie's solo album. I'm a big P-Funk fan and I did not even know Eddie had a solo album. Second of all, the only reason that I posted this information is because I know/knew that no prince fan would have known about this. Third of all, of all the artist in existence today, Prince is the very LAST one that I would have thought of, in a case where one of his best songs IMHO ,was based on someone else's work in such an obvious way. If you don't like it, move on to another thread. For me, it changes my concept of the song knowing that the source of the music did not come from Prince. For those of you who do not "hear" it, you don't want to hear "it". It's all good. Either way, some sunlight has been shown on the origin of the music for Prince's song DMB. It's really that simple. As for computer nerds talking shit on the internet, I'm real ez to find. -Mg

The people who care are people who are into music, not prince roger nelson the person, but prince's music and art and its origin, nature, and dissection and discussion and its place in the whole wide world of art and music.

If you don't care, you don't have to click this thread... there are plenty of others.

I think if you two were born earlier, ya'll would have imprisoned Galileo!nuts

Just had a listen to the snippet of FM, and indeed i have to say that there are striking similarities as far as the progression the chords is concerned. The whole feel of the song is much different though. Both songs do use the /FMaj7 /Em7 Am7 progression (to mu ears at least), but i have to admit that this is a very standard progression of chords in any case..

I do think that P may have been influenced by FM, but he reworked it into a song which does have it's own feel and identity.

Agreed! At the level to which Prince records and writes songs it is virtually impossible to not have direct references and influences in his work. This goes to all the W&L complaints and to any songs that were created from jam sessions. Rock music is not structurely complex enough for it to not happen more often hence the weakness in copyright infringement cases.

not trynna start shit or nothing, but i find it funny people are on here dismissing claims that prince may have jacked something or sayin that it doesnt matter when if it had been any other artist (especially one of the newer ones) people would be shouting left and right shitty state of music, noones original now and days, see i knew he or she wasnt that creative etc....
