I'm stunned - I'm actually quite pleased with it. Not too keen on the chorus or the disjointed link back to the verses, but it is sparse and funky, and just how Prince should be.
Video is on MTV.com and is worth a look. Love his look when the woman screams. Also love her skirt at the start... but that's another story.

Not feeling this song upon first listen. Reminds me alot of Rave. It seems like the same thing happened all over again. He performs a song live and it's hot. Then years later he records it...and it's not. My name is Prince and I want your money

the melody is kinda 'tick tick bang' the wave machine is a bit out of fashion, but at least he didn't use the term "fo' shizzle" in the lyrics. so it's uptemp and funky? the description you gave sounds great! do we know when the album is coming out yet?

I just saw the video and heard it for the first time and that's what it sorta reminded me of. This new trend of decent r&b acts/singers going for that minimalist sound a la Black Eyed Peas - My Humps, for commerciality I can smell some funk but i think it'll grow on me No Freestyling.

Now the video has broken-out on some of the major music sites, like VH1, MTV etc, I've been able to finally hear what you lot have been talking about the past day or so.
First impressions - I think it's funky, sassy, and very tongue-in-cheek. But the one thing that grabbed me right from the off is the production - I am increadibly impressed with the production, it's slick, dynamic and dang it Prince - it's actually got some kick-ass bottom-end! I really like the subtle Nine Inch Nails-esque keyboard stabs, and the keyboard motif that runs through it reminds me somewhat of The Chronic. 7 outta 10 - it's good, it's funky, and very enticing and all that... but leaves me feeling he's pandering somewhat. Still, it's a huge, positively stratospheric improvement/leap from Te Amo Mogadon to that mutha - so in that context I'm happily satiated. *reappraised edit

The chorus sounds very familier to something else?
Anyway, its a rnb cut, and i guess this is like his own "new power generation" or something? Give it 10 years, it will date badly. Still, catchy chorus, but i swear that chorus is stolen from somewhere? Prince is chasing trends again.

gaaaaah...."black sweat" actually sounds like the exact same kinna shit the brotha's been talking against: pre-packaged, mindless boolshittin-assed, mindless beats. the antithesis of all that's princely, in my eyes. the joint smells of an atypical friday night's dancing at the club, drunk as fuck and just about to beat down & snatch the weave outta the woman's hair next to you because she accidentally scuffed your high heeled pleather boots. it's getting props from some of ya'll, but...not me. it's getting pitched in the same bin i pitched "te amo cortisone" (*snort*) in. it just ain't my bag.
the video's no better either. the ladies in it were kinna cute and i kinda dug that pinstriped joint p had on, but still...gaaaaah. surprising thing about the vid, though: ol' boy actually looked his age in it for once. craziness!

Ditto. Since this edited version (proposed) is almost all electronic instruments (drums, bass, Keys) I'm thinking the extended or album version is gonna breakout into some crazy funk jam with live instruments. Kinda like he use to. Kiss, I Wish U Heaven, that kind of vibe. Yep. That's what I'm hoping for. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

Well, I've heard it.
It's good, but I think a lot of you are overrating it. It's basically Bob George Version 2. The beat's pretty funky, and the chorus is nice, but it doesn't really grab you. It's trying to be a club hit but it doesn't have the energy or a pulsating enough hook. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

Hands, I've always dug u. Cool as hell. And your post is a perfect reason why. Least to say, I agree withcha, overall. P is going up against today's market and that's the first thing I thought of when I heard it. P could do this stuff in his sleep. I thought it was funky, in a way. Like I posted earlier, I would have loved for him to have put some live bass guitar, and guitar in it. But that's me. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. At least their ain't no rapper on it. Still, i woulda pissed myself if tony m showed up on it, with damon doing his trademark face pulling in the background.
funny how pharrel is trying to be prince, and now prince sharing the same tip as pharrel. Still, better then the no chorus thing of "Musicology". [Edited 2/2/06 14:58pm]

That's bang on the mark, I was just thinking that. The stabs are proper NIN style, sounds like something Trent would have done on "The Fragile" in particular. And yeah, the high pitched synth is very early 90's dre. |

Oh come on now - none of this 'haters' nonsense. If people don't like the song, it doesn't make them any 'less a fan' than you or anybody else. So let's get that straight right now before this thread also descends into that silly tit-for-tat chaos.

No, at the end of the day there are two camps: The likes, The don't likes, (plus the odd few bad apples who just like to mess with folks who we try to ignore) At the end of the day whether you like it or not - is relative, and I don't see why I should be labelled a 'hater' if I don't particularly like or care for a song just because somebody else adores it. It is what it is. As for those clowns... just don't rise to the bait.

that run-on sentence ya got there is definitely hotter than the song/video. ...but on the real side, squash the "you're not a real fan if..." stuff. seriously. you and others really like/love the song--good for you. me and a few others don't like it--good for me/us. one's amount of fandom ain't at stake here, nor are those of us who are showing disdain for it are trying to make people angry (and if you actually feel anger after seeing negative comments about the song--s'kinna pitiful. it's just a song).
