nah... that lttle part when that bass synth boogie rhythm comes on just for a bit on the last two measures of each part makes the song hit that unique prince flavor, I say thumbs up, I see ass round bouncing when I hear that...

Really dig this song. It is a song that attempts a topical sound that actually does not sound dated. It's minimalist and yet really busy at the same time. It's funky but not James Brown funky...damn Prince funky. Not sure if it will be a hit or not for Prince, based on past radio resistence, but it would be a hit for a younger artist. Have to see how it goes but I have much more hope for 3121 now.

You think so? But how many commercial albums has he made since then? Rave, Musicology and although we don't know 3121 we can count that one. Then there's been TRC, Xpectations, ONA and NEWS. I would like this song more if it hadn't this stop-and-start beat. I agree that it's somewhat early-80s Prince, but back then he had a straight beat going, with those great linn embellishments like the rim-shot. More my cup o'tea.
And the high-pitched synth is annyoing on headphones! Might just be the mp3, though. But I'm definitely happy with the overall feeling and sound of the song. He's even freaking a bit! | |

I love Prince to death. But this shit sounds like he took about 5 steps backward. This could have easily fit as one of the better tracks on New Power Soul. Even though I dug Te Amo Corti... damnit!!! Corazon... This song is just as vomitrocious as Life O' The Party. Beautiful Loved and Blessed isn't too bad (ain't too good either), but Black Sweat is the song I'm hoping is not indicative of what 3121 sounds like. However I won't make prejudgments yet. All of the singles so far have been on opposite angles as far as the styles. Here's hoping that 3121 is a completely mixed bag of predominantly interesting material  I'm sorry, but this is nothing like "Life O' the Party"...that shit was gratingly corny and completely pedestrian in style and groove...(Does everything that possesses harder driven drums and a contempoary sound have to be compared to Musicology or even Rave??? The keyboards on this joint is classic Prince and the percussion is the '80s Linn drum on steroids). The thing with this "Black Sweat" shit: it simply pops...It has a revitalized energy that has been lacking in his material for the last 10 years...I think a lot of folks are judging the song on its lack of complexity, irony, strong lyricism, guitar and so on....And this sect is completely right on this view...But....News flash folks: it's a funky ass dance track tailored for the clubs....no more, no less...And not only is it a spirited funky effort, it's his most natural attempt at bringing the vintage "Prince" sound to a more contemporary chamber...If you don't like the song, that's cool and perfectly understandable...But saying that the man is aping the Neptunes's sound (not you guys up top...) is just silly and misinformed...He's reclaiming his mojo from Skateboard P & Chad...Take a listen to "Slave To U" or the first Nerd album....All I know is I heard "Black Sweat" played six times in the span of two hours on the radio...Prince hasn't enjoyed that type of mainstream love in a while...And for this longtime Prince fan (age 35) that's the payoff.... I don't mind if he copies. I don't want this song to achieve nothing besides it making my big butt swing. And it does. I am not a Prince fan that wants Prince to be an image in the media, or in the top 40. I, for years, have been hoping for a Prince making music that was fun and still musically viable. I mean, I applaud enterprises like N.E.W.S and The Rainbow Children, but it was still Prince 'doing a trick'. Prince 'does' religion. Prince 'does' jazz. It delivered us some inspiring tunes, but not the tunes that moved my soul AND rump, ya know? It seems that with 3121, Prince has refound the JOY of composing, recording and performing music. Not just whip out an album to show critics (Musicology) or an album to shut his fans up (the 'piano' album One Nite Alone). It started with him jamming at home and turned into something of a fresh gust of wind through his mind. The clip to Black Sweat sparkles with humour AND is classy. The performance/duet with Tamar shows that he takes an interest in other people again, not just focusing on his own demons. Prince is having FUN... and so are we. I am looking forward to 3121 with much joy. | |

well i think i am a pretty level headed long time prince music lover but i think this has the most potential in the last 10 years to be a big hit for prince, in the us particuarly, and i can see it going top ten in the uk if it gets promoted and released properly.....i have listened to it a number of times and it has a class about it that has been missing for a while....really looking forward to the album....i know already that it will be far better than musicology  [Edited 2/3/06 2:50am] | |

After the frustration of Rave, I thought Prince ´learned the lesson´ and stopped trying to be ´cool´ and reach young audiences, and settled down, focusing more on music and less on stardom. I even thought ´Musicology´ was a step into other kind of commercialism (trying to reach mature audiences)...but I was wrong. Judging for ´Black Sweat´ it still seems that Prince wants that ´comeback´ and to be ´hip´ and commercial. Good luck to him.

Alright, I like this joint, but with only 3:13 or somesuch and considering the way it ends, I cannot help but expect maybe two minutes more with some nasty and tight rhythm guitar put on top.

The beat is funky... the falsetto is cool... better than anything on Musicology for sure.
But not as hot as some people are claiming (did I just hear someone say it was his best song since 1999?). I keep waiting for it to really take off at the end but it doesn't. Needs some funky bass work or something... Definately has potential though, although I doubt commericially. [Edited 2/3/06 3:31am] |

The more I listen to it, the more I think we have here a new Prince classic. I have the same feeling as I had back in the day when I listened to P's new singles. Same feeling.
It is a very vicious track that appears very simple in the first place but is in fact a lesson of minimalism. It is pure perfection. Great tune. It is funky, sexy, dirty and classy at the same time, great sens of humour. Great great great single. I did not expect that at all. And the vids we have at the moment from the Prince camp are better than anyhting he has released so far in terms of videos as well. I love this track. I'm not saying it's another 'Sign O'The Times' or anything like that (after all, what is?). But, as I listened to it for the first time with the headphones on, and the Linn drum machine started kicking out those hypnotic beats (as many have remarked on this board, remember where that Neptunes/Timbaland sound came from), I felt a twinge of excitement and a shiver down my spine like I haven't felt for many years. That sparse, hypnotic sound, the sleazy keyboards, and the tangible sense of erotic tension punctured by his rasping falsetto took me back many years. A great single.
And it bodes well for 3121. I'm not a 'Te Amo Corazon' hater; that song is like a pleasant summer daydream sensuously smothering my senses. 'Black Sweat' is a nasty, dark pleasure, like a funky vampire bat. | |
