Kevin Smith sheds more light on 2001 documentary

Kevin Smith, the director of Dogma, Clerks, Chasing Amy, and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, is back in the spotlight again.

Smith, who back in 2001 was asked by Prince to document "Prince, A Celebration: The Rainbow Children," appeared at a Wizard comiccon convention in Chicago over the weekend. Sure, a lot of banter about the upcoming Clerks 2 movie, but Smith was asked a question about his experience at Paisley Park with Prince, which was featured in a 26-minute answer that is on 2002's 2-DVD AN EVENING WITH KEVIN SMITH.

Well, this time around he went into a little more detail about the overall week-long experience in Chanhassen during the pre-hype of The Rainbow Children, which was part of a very long Q&A at Chicago's comic convention.

"Smith gave a follow up to the Prince story he's told at numerous conventions, about being hired to do a documentary on the Purple One and things going famously wrong. "I got a call two years after the DVD came out, [Prince's] producer calls, and she was like 'I can't believe you named me, by name!' I was like, 'Did you get in trouble?' She said 'I left there, but I was getting frantic calls, and I had to go in to meet him. He was like 'where was his non-disclosure agreement?' They had given me one to sign, but I put it down like 'I'll get to it later. I forgot, and thankfully I didn't sign it. He was really fuckin' mad about it. 'He wanted to sue you, but he found out you didn't sign the agreement,' so I was like 'right on, good for me.' It went around Paisley Park for a year, from employee to employee, like 'you need to see this, he fuckin' nailed him.' Then I heard he was on the cover of Entertainment Weekly, when Musicology came out, and the author of the piece called me up. ''Prince talked about Jersey Girl.' And I'm still like a fan, like 'Prince talked about me? Did he love it?' No. 'He went out of his way to talk about it. He said he saw Jersey Girl, and he just didn't like it. He said, 'I guess that's what happens when the potty mouth don't work for you no mo,' that's what he said. There's another DVD, 'Evening with Kevin Smith 2: Evening Harder' where I talk about him again."

Check out http://www.newsaskew.com/ for additional highlights of the Q&A. ...

Prince needs to lighten up, really.

The Smith story was hilarious, and it was obvious it wasn't malicious or anything. Just having some fun with the guy, mostly.

He wanted to sue him because he believed Kevin had violated the confidentlity agreement. He would have been within his rights to do so but, I guess it is good for Kevin that he did not sign it. Now Kevin can go on and on about this for the rest of his life.

Smith's movies aren't packing them in and this is just some guy spinning the same story over and over again and getting paid for doing so.

That's about it in a nut shell.

And if I recall, "Jersey Girl" got panned by movie critics and some of Kevin's most hardcore fans also. So, why Prince's opinion on it would be of any importance to him is interesting.

You know it, I know it and the rest of 'em know it! That was his plan from the beginning!

"He was like 'where was his non-disclosure agreement?'They had given me one to sign, but I put it down like 'I'll get to it later. I forgot, and thankfully I didn't sign it."

the beautiful thing about Kevin and the TRC/Celebration thing is that he represents 100% the confusion and the disappointment every real Prince fan felt during that period.

i was at the 2001 celebration and got to talk to him about comics and stuff. When talking about Prince ever so briefly we just both shrugged our heads and had the same "WTF?....this is soooo wierd" look on our faces.

Prince is so dumb sometimes. Didn't this fool call someone to do work for complimentary on the house?
And he got mad cuz Kevin didnt sign the confidentiality agreement?

Why do prince fans defend all of his actions? You should just say "You know thats really flaky Prince. Why would you play mind games with a film maker who was a fan of you?"

Prince got it back to him and for everybody defending every single little thing.

Every single detail of that story sounds like Prince. Prince didn't like it cuz someone didn't worship him correctly for free. It was all karma handed to his ass. When your behaviour is out of line you get burned.

All Prince had to do was thank the man for coming out and realize he threw away a week because Prince stalked him to come out and film a documentary at the moments notice.

That's why Hollywood doesn't touch Prince anymore. No one wants to deal with that. Thats why his last 2 films tanked.

Oh come on, let's REALLY be honest and admit that nobody but a Prince fan will be buying a Kevin Smith DVD to hear Kevin Smith talk about Prince.

Don't make it out to be Kevin Smith trying to cash in on his notorious exploits with Prince. Gimme a break. He's got all kinds of stories to tell. Prince wasn't the only subject on the first DVD and I'm sure his story won't dominate the second. And he didn't say anything about Prince that was nearly as bad as the stuff he said about Jon Peters.

Prince says a lot of things. One of my personal favourites was his declaring that he no longer believed in marriage (as spin control on his impending divorce from Mayte), then marrying Manuela. falloff The man is a brilliant musician, but he is as full of shit as they come.

He's a movie director [flame snipped -Tom], it's not like he's built his entire career on this one meeting with Prince.

Why is it that you can't make a point without getting all personal and shit? Just because we don't agree with your special brand of bull, why you got to resort to name calling? What's wrong, no conviction in your ability to communicate? Mature adults agree that we can disagree on a subject. Only real "dopes" resort to acting childish.

What exactly is the argument here? Do you honestly believe that Kevin Smith is somehow milking this Prince story for financial gain? And that "that was his plan from the beginning," by not signing a non-disclosure? Read what you are writing. Anyone who believes that is so deserving of the tag "dope."

Kevin Smith's films make most of their money on in the DVD and rental markets, He's HUGE in rental and his movies sell out on DVD fairly quickly too. in a lot of ways that's better then being big at the box office, it gives a movie more staying power. At the Video Store i used to work at, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back was constantly rented out and that was up to 3 years after the movie was released. The money Kevin gets for his "evening with" speeches is nothing compared to what he's making on his movies and memorabilia. Plus he's a nice guy who keeps the line of communications with his fans open. if only more celebrities could be as grounded as him.
