Okay I have to agree with you 'Legs. And another thing! The first time I saw Prince (1999) with The Time and Zapp/Roger....
Me and my crew... we went to see the TIME!!

And they blew it away! Prince was outrageous, and very entertaining... but the Time, I am telling y'all, it was a focking PARTY OVA HERE, PARTY OVA THERE!!! NOW WAVE YOUR HANDS IN THE AIR, NOW WAVE 'EM LIKE YOU JUST DON'T CARE!!!

Bullshit! That child don't know her ass from the hole in the ground lol . However, if you were to mention true Divas like Patti, Teena Marie, Nona Hyndrix, Tina, Aretha,Whiteny(before drugs) then I can understand. Sorry but, Miss Wannabe Soul ain't cutting it.

But I will say this, she is showing some potential as a songwriter when compared to her contemporaries, Beyonce, Christina, etc.
I have both Keys CD'S because I like the content of her songs, her storytelling to music (which is to me what a good song really is) is bettter than Beyonce's "bootylicious" or Bills, Bills, Bills... which is not telling a story like (Diary or Falling), only relaying a brief moment ("look at my azz in these new daisy dukes").

So I have to give Ms. Keys credit. Also, I think that with years, she will join the ranks.

I would say the Jacksons. I admit, that I have not yet seen them perform live together. Having watched these guy's cartoon as a young child. They seemed a little too corny for me at the time. I passed on their Triumph tour. Damn, am I feeling like a fool. Having to had overlooked much of their music together. I recently looked into my missing time, in reference to the Jacksons. eek Wow!, I bet they would blow Prince's stuff off the stage!

It seems that, I've seen all I care to of Prince, but never again will I miss these guys coming to my city!

Also I have to take away from Whitney. She has an incredible voice, (really the most pure as far as clarity, tone, and range than just about any of the others listed. I have never heard Whitney hit a bad/flat note (prior to drugs) (let me take cover) boxed but Whitney didn't have the feeling behind it the way Aretha, Patti, Teena. Whitney had good producers and managers who picked out great songs to sing, and she has a voice that is polished without effort, but she shouldn't be in the catergory as Aretha , Teena Marie (who has hit more than a few flat notes, but makes it work!)

Let's replace Whitney in that category with Chaka Khan who can still stop my roll, long enough to really listen to one of her classics.

Sade

Her band is hugely, hugely underrated..(and they dont need to show off to entertain).....and she knows how to hold an entire stadium captive just with her presence.....no gimmicks...no dancers....no fifty people on stage....no special effects...just her presence...no grandstanding....

Sade (the entire band including Ms. Adu) is a class act....totally different then Prince..but equally talented on stage.

and im gonna say something that might earn a lot of flack but Bette Midler puts on an awesome show too....totally different then Prince but I was equally entertained..

Prince is just one of a long list of entertainers that have fine tuned their talents on stage and give wonderful wonderful face.....

clapping Well said. Although I have never seen them live I have seen a lot of concert footage over the years and I recently purchased the "Lovers Rock" concert DVD. It is a continuation of artistic brilliance in a live presentation. You are dead on target when you say that the band is hugely underrated. These are the same musicians and producers that launched Maxwell. Sade is the only female led band whose music I have faithfully collected since "Smooth Operator" nod. I have always wanted P to hook up with that crew. Bunny and Stuart Matthewman are consumate musicians and I think P would really enjoy the working with them. I actually heard somewhere that P mentioned Sade as one of the artists "acts" that he'd like to collaborate with. That would be so cool...just for a song or two. biggrin

Michael Jackson thumbs up!

Before you start throwing stuff at me - let me explain.

Now not his HIStory Tour or even his 30th Anniversary Special..those were alright but those aren't what I'm talking about. I think Michael is one of those artists who is fantastic to watch live (like I'm sure Prince is.)

However..his "Bad" tour..wow. I didn't go to it but dang, just watching the taped performances show how great it was. I wish I could have been there. That was MAGIC.

But I'm sure there is an awesome Prince concert that would make a close second. (IMO)

I too, saw Michael during the Dangerous World Tour, and I've seen Prince four times. Once in'93, then in '97 and twice last year. I realize that this is only subjective, but Prince IMOP wins hands down because he's the FULL Package. His showstopping moves rivals James and Michael. His musicianship just phenomenal! When you can carry a sell-out crowd, who stood up from their seats during the entire shows, to a frenzy by just playing an acoustic guitar and singing ALONE, that's the REAL DEAL, as fellow genius Stevie Wonder who go on to say. His underrated guitar skills rival that of Hendrix and Santana. His overall artistry rivals Aretha, Joni Mitchell, Marvin, Miles, and Coltrane. Plus his
showman ship rivals that of Madonna, in certain respects! I'm an open-minded guy who has watched everyone from Bon Jovi to Al Green, from the Dixie Chicks to Public Enemy, Beastie Boys, Outkast, George Strait, to B.B. King and many more. All are outstanding artists in their own right, but to me, Prince is to music what Michal Jordan was to basketball! Just can't beat it!

co-sign in a big way! Well stated:thumbsup: woot!

Hotlegs, its funny that you should say that because I have been to see Patti twice here in DC and they both were just incredible shows. Now while she's no threat at all to Prince, Man can that lady sing! And like Tina, she has uncanny energy and stage presence for someone her age. I actually wanted to mention her name but thought that I'd get flamed. smile I wonder why I don't see people bringing P gifts in the way that they line up at Patti's shows to shower on her.

You are so wrong. Alicia is the hotness! Her shows are fiyah! And her music is true soul. There's nobody out there like Alicia. If she was such a soul wannabe, why does she have 9 Grammy's from only 2 albums? Explain that! Don't hate! neutral

ohio players and lakeside can hold their own woht prince best believe.....even after 30 plus years both bands still rock the house especially lakeside's thomas shelby with his trusty cowbell and james brown/jackie wilson influened spins/vocal yelps....and then there's ohio's james "diamond" williams and leroy bonner aka "sugarfoot".... when sugar was the last to step onstage wearin his black and gold outifit, the audience was his before he could say even one word....and of course everybody's jaws dropped when they heard how thunderous "diamond" still is on the drums....

Best outdoor concert I was at was Springsteen's Rising Tour. My favourite concert ever was Bowie in 2003. Both those bands are just so tight. We all know about the E Street Band but Bowies was every bit as good and the icing on the cake was that the concert I attended was recorded and released as a DVD. I've just seen Prince play twice, circa 1990 and 1992, I think I prefered the Nude Tour. He was good but didn't blow me away like the other two did but then his current band are way better than the one I saw him with. I'd have to place Prince fourth on my list of favourite ever concerts after Bowie, the Boss and Christy Moore (wheres me feckin shovel?). Best performer I'll never see must be Freddie Mercury, he knew how to work the crowd.

By the way the worst concert ever has to go to Mr. Van the Man Morrison. I had heard that he dosen't engage with the audience but it has to be witnessed to be believed.

There are plenty of artists that have captivated the crowd as much as Prince, but I'd never say their shows were better. P puts on a phenomenal show. As far as musicianship and stage presence, crowd interaction..I'd say that these acts hold it down like P...

1. The Time
2. Parliament/Funkadelic
3. Mint Condition
4. Sade
5. Chaka Khan
6. Maceo Parker
8. Afro-Cuban All-Stars

consistently - no one. as a one off the only band I have seen that equals prince was Wendy & Lisa live inLondon 1990. Think as one offs Bowie and queen could come close.

To put this in context i have seen the following acts live:

MJ, Depeche Mode, Tears for Fears, Percy Sledge, Beck, Human League, Squeeze, Madonna, U2, Simple Minds, Oasis, Robbie Williams. (of these MJ and Oasis were by far the worst + boring)

I'm sure 'Legs has beat me to the punch, but the Time of today was not the Time that I went to see on the Controversy tour.
Go back to school pilgrim! Prince broke up his biggest threat. If they weren't so good, then why did Prince disband them?
