My sister hates Prince, but still thought it was the best concert she ever saw, so I'd agree that right now Prince is the best live performer.

Same thng happened to me. A friend who was strictly a metalhead and disliked Prince raved and still does that "Prince was the best show Ive ever seen!".

Neil Finn. Much more banter (and without the pretense), and some really solid tunes. When he ventures off, he's liable to do everything from jazz standards to Crowded House obscurities.

Really great show.

I love Neil Finn. I've seen him a few times (twice in one day actually). And with his catalog of solo stuff, Crowded House stuff, and Split Enz stuff-he has alot of great music. Great concert...not so much of a great "show". Really smart, fun show...but not the star power that Prince or Bowie have.

and im gonna say something that might earn a lot of flack but Bette Midler puts on an awesome show too....totally different then Prince but I was equally entertained..

I taped a Bette Midler concert from the tv years ago and I have to agree with you it was Fantanstic. I watched it over and over, fantastic costume changes, pure comedic performance topped off with a fuckin' great voice.

I think I'll have to have a look through my old vcr tapes to see if it's still there.

p.s. in answer to the question though it's still Prince for me. headbang

i saw No Doubt play a rock festival a couple of years ago and they're more than a match for anyone, but i suppose you'd have to like some of their music to enjoy it. But as far as working a crowd and putting on a live show goes, they're as good as anyone.

I saw Prince on the ONA Tour and that was my favourite live show, probably cos it's the only Prince show I've been to and there's no comparrison betweem his music and No Doubt's music, Prince could kick all their asses...twice!

Bob Dylan was pretty disappointing, he spent the entire show hiding behind his piano.

Frank Black and the Catholics, and the Pixies last year, were unforgettable.

As for MJ, back in the 80's I'm sure it would have been amazing to be there in person, but from what I've seen on video, Prince put on a better show.

Much as I loved the ONA concert...too much horns. I miss the synths.

Michael Jackson thumbs up!

Before you start throwing stuff at me - let me explain.

Now not his HIStory Tour or even his 30th Anniversary Special..those were alright but those aren't what I'm talking about. I think Michael is one of those artists who is fantastic to watch live (like I'm sure Prince is.)

However..his "Bad" tour..wow. I didn't go to it but dang, just watching the taped performances show how great it was. I wish I could have been there. That was MAGIC.

But I'm sure there is an awesome Prince concert that would make a close second. (IMO)

Really? I was a huge Jackson fan back in the day and I saw taped preformaces of Bad and the Dangerous tour and they kinda bored me. I could watch Sign of the Times and other preformace clips of Prince and they could hold my attention over and over. I liked MJ's videos but I thought his live shows were kinda boring. biggrin

hmmm MJ shows are tight now I must say and their in a class by themselves.

I also would say the same about Tina Turner. She is rough in concert. I haven't seen a female performer that can come close. She is also a performer that is in a class by themselves b/c of the high energy volume non stuff in her case in stiletto for 3 hours.

A big regret: not going to see Tina when she came to my city on her farewell ('Wildest Dreams'?) tour. sigh One of my mates went and she said it was the best gig she's ever been to and I can believe that.

Well, until she's been school'd by Prince, that is. wink

Ok, so just because this is a Prince related site doesn't mean I'm going to kiss his rear end...but hands down he is the best there ever was and prob the best there ever will be. He is solid 99.9% of the time if not even 100% from his playing to his moves.

Now I've seen well over a hundred concerts of various artists and while I really have a great time at every one I attend I still gotta give it to Prince.

Some respectible runners up IMO that I have attended are Garth Brooks Greatest Hits Tour); Tim McGraw/Faith Hill (Soul2Soul Tour); Shania Twain (Up Tour)No I don't only go to country concertsAnd although Tommy Lee's Drum solo didn't impress me much, the closest I think to being my favorite over Prince was Motley Crue's (Red, White and Crue Tour) but it still fell a little short.

So Prince wins!

Prince's early 80's shows (especially the Controversy tour) can't be topped.

But ....
James Brown did it all 20 years earlier ....
Parliament / Funkadelic was a better jammin' machine
Sly Stone is ultimate cool ... just like Maxwell during the Urban Hang Suite tour .....
Trent Reznor gets far more respect (he's a god to a lot of industrial fans), and he can handle this status much better than Prince can

I saw U2 earlier this year and they put on a great show. I still put Prince as the Top of the Tops as a live performer.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I think Prince is great for what he does. It is not, however, the only blueprint for great live performances. For me, spontaneity counts for a lot. Although I enjoyed the most recent tour, it definitely had the feel of a polished, slickly choreographed set. And again, that's fine. But to answer the question, I always loved Fishbone live. First off, they were about as solid a band as you'd come across. And just the sheer excitement of not knowing what to expect from them on any given night. Angelo Moore could work a stage like nobody's business. It was generally 2 hours of frenetic energy. And great music...

Then there is the charisma and allure that is David Bowie. With his catalog and personal appeal, I think Bowie could simply stand on stage with nothing but a stage light and guitar and I'd be entertained.

Actually no I'm not retarded. It is all "subjective." There is no "objective" best live show. It isn't a set fact. So what you hold to be true - someone else might disagree with. I can name a few people who don't care much for Bowie (and that being said would certainly not call his live show one of the greatest or near Prince's for that matter.) As for MJ..Well he certainly isn't over. The guy made Thriller. He was found NOT GUILTY 10 times over and his most recent studio album (Invincible) *Not counting compilations here* debuted number one in every country including America. So..to make a long story short..
The truth hurts..Michael's "Bad" tour was the best..deal with it. jedi
