I've seen Miles Davis concerts on TV, but I can't say that was one of the best shows...because-well I WASN'T THERE. Looked/sounded great. But to experience a show you have to feel the energy in the room.
Artists like: Prince, & Bowie stay relevent, current, rich, & fresh is because they tour and rework there old material. Sure David Bowie still plays Ziggy from almost 30 years ago-but he has accumulated new material, new fans, a new perspective, new musicians. And he (like PRINCE) has consistently done great shows (although some of those 80's bowie tours were weak). So to sum this up: I don't think MJ is relevent, i think he's a has been, and has really milked the media, and recording industry for attention with his past accomplishments. Although MJ has done some amazing, and un-touchable things in the recording industry: his time has past, any of his future tours (& endeavors) will fail, and that's if he even ever tours again. Apparently if he has any pressure (like court for molesting children) he is apparently too sickly or addicted to drugs to rise to the occasion. So I don't think the guy could even finish a tour-if we're to believe he is/was unhealthy as he is. So yeah...thats why I called you retarded. MJ has given some truely legendary shows and it's not absurd for him to be brought into the discussion. If i had a choice of attending a Prince or a MJ concert while they were both in their prime I would choose Prince because that's my personal preference...But you can't dismiss anyone on thise site who picks Mike....I mean, I went to the Triumph Tour (not the sloppy Victory tour) and it was an awesome show, without all the dancers and bells and whistles...Just Mike with his Brothers tearing up the stage on some great material including songs from Off The Wall and Triumph. The Triumph tour was THE tour to be topped. I just forgot it was so long ago that Ive underappreciated it all these years. Only the 1999 tour has come close to it (tied). However in context Im sure JB also did a helluva show. I guess we are talking overall in-their-prime elements or should consider that. Springsteen.
You get your money's worth in more than just the length of the show (usually approx. 3 hrs.). His concerts run the gamut of emotions, taking a very hard look at life, but - ultimately - finding cause for hope. His sets are immaculately tailored and he changes up the setlist from night to night. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll wonder at the man's energy and you'll leave wanting to go back the very next night. He's currently touring solo and that's a very different experience (just the man with acoustic guitar and piano, with much more talk), but equally rewarding. | |

His underrated guitar skills rival that of Hendrix and Santana. His overall artistry rivals Aretha, Joni Mitchell, Marvin, Miles, and Coltrane. Plus his showman ship rivals that of Madonna, in certain respects! I'm an open-minded guy who has watched everyone from Bon Jovi to Al Green, from the Dixie Chicks to Public Enemy, Beastie Boys, Outkast, George Strait, to B.B. King and many more. All are outstanding artists in their own right, but to me, Prince is to music what Michal Jordan was to basketball! Just can't beat it! | |

I won't say better, because it would be comparing apples and oranges, but there are a few others that come to mind when discussing great shows.
I agree about Sade. That show was one of the most enojyable I've been to. The band was amazing, the vibe was groovy, laid back and classy, the staging was wonderful. Very enjoyable. But I'd add Peter Gabriel to the list. Talk about showmanship! His sets are amazing (Secret World Tour), his musicians are top notch, great energy and creativity. And then there's Pink Floyd. It's an experience you'll never forget. The music is great, I don't mean to belittle that aspect at all, but the SHOW is mesmerizing. Who else can set a mood like they do? The light show is perfect in compliment to the music. Plus you have planes crashing into the side of the stadium. Pigs flying out of the screen toward you. Gabriel, Pink Floyd and Prince. If a show is announced, there's no question that I'll be there -- no matter the cost -- because I know I'm guaranteed to get my money's worth and more. I've gone to find myself. If I should return before I get back, keep me here. | |

Yes, Gabriel's Secret World was amazing. Rush puts on a great show...but Musicology was really spectacular. I've seen P many times but I really liked this one. He's without peer.
Saw Nappy Roots the other night. Terrible when they're imitating Outkast ("Rewind"? How about "Eject"!) but acceptable otherwise. | |

Having seen Lovesexy back in the day I'll give prince his due, that was a show that I didnt think could ever be topped, it was an incredible event; a moment of my life.
Though I have to say that Dolly Parton, Yes Dolly almost held her own against him when I saw her at the house of blues a couple yrs back. That lil lady, and i mean all 5 ft of her, held the audience in her hand from the moment she walked on stage. Make all the fun you want bout her jugs, but that lady can sing and write one helluva song. Another top performancd that rivaled Prince was Melissa Etheridge. When I went to see her also at the house of blues, I was expecting an indie folkys granola lesbian campfire show. Man, was I in for a surprise. She Wailed and Rocked that place. Her voice filled that hall and no one wasnt effected. She played i think for almost 3 1/2 hours and by the end my voice was gone and i was hoping that she would just end the show so I could go outside catch my breath and have a beer with my friend and talk bout one of the best, if not the best shows i had ever seen. The next day I went out and bought almost she had put out. If any of you get a chance to catch either of these talented ladies dont even think maybe for a secong Go and see a show that will stay with you for a long long time. MJ puts on a good show but is limited bcuz he can't play. P can wow a crowd with dancing,singing, or playing multiple instruments! And P also communicates 2 his crowd better. Now i will say that i've seen the TIME,Cameo,ZAPP,and the P-FUNK ALLstars blow me away and leave me just as high as a P concert. But if i had 1 choice it would b Prince! U,ME,WE!....2FUNKY! | |

If the crowd was in a weird mood that night and liked some stuff more than others who could react to that? Who could give the crowd what they wanted? Who's band is always so tight they could do a 2 hour jam at Brixton Academy (supposed to be a full "proper" concert)? Prince obviously. Watching MJ was just like watching his videos; same clothes, dances etc. As for artist/audience interaction, all MJ ever said was 'I love you'. In terms of musicianship, he didn't even dare approach a tamborine. It was a good pop show, but nothing more. The Prince concert on the other hand was by far the best live show I've ever been to. Passion, fun, shocks, outstanding musicianship, and unlike any other show. All the press here said the same, as all compared the two 'rivals' shows. 'Wacko Jacko Gets The Sacko' was one memorable headline. Have to say that though she doesn't have MJ's talent, Madonna's Blonde Ambition show the next year was better than Michael's too. | |

My sister hates Prince, but still thought it was the best concert she ever saw, so I'd agree that right now Prince is the best live performer.
In the 90's when Prince used more taped stuff, he fell off a bit, so I'd say that The Red Hot Chillie Peppers were the best live performers. All you others say Hell Yea!!  | |

Neil Finn. Much more banter (and without the pretense), and some really solid tunes. When he ventures off, he's liable to do everything from jazz standards to Crowded House obscurities.
