I have no problem with this Gift Box, and as someone's already pointed out, nobody's forcing
us to buy it, and the price isn't extortionate for what's in it (just add up how much each item would cost individually). However..... Why oh why is so hard for Prince to just release some simple straightforward CDs through his website!!! He seems obsessed with putting together great big unnecessary box sets all the time. The music downloads are fine, but why not actually just press some of that stuff up on CD and sell it through NPGMC retail? If the Controversy single was made available seperately, I'd buy one. First we get the One Nite Alone...Live! box set. Very nice, but why not just release the double album to retail as-is as well? More casual fans would be inclined to buy a regular 2CD version. Then there was going to be the 7CD Chocolate Invasion box set. Again, why not make all these CDs available seperately too? Not everyone wants all 7 CDs, or can afford it all in one go. And now this! There's a large percentage of fans who are really only interested in the music. Why is it so hard to press some CDs up and let them buy it? The download section is doing a great job, but why not extend that to the physical world as well? Why not just press up proper CDs with artwork etc. for... Xpectation CD album The Chocolate Invasion CD album The Slaughterhouse CD album The C-Note CD EP etc... and why not release some Musicology CD singles too (even some basic 2 track CDs like the Hit 'n' Run ones would be cool) Musicology / Magnificent Call My Name / Silver Tongue Cinnamon Girl / The United States Of Division

I guess only the complainers in NPGMC.
Thass whut I'm SAYin'!! Just cause it don't have my favorite liquid foundation don't mean I'm not gonna enjoy my hundred dollar royal purple hat box!!! That would be CRAZY TALK, and I'm not crazy. But then again--where are all the asian babies? Yes, I DO. Prince has always made a point about appealing to a multi-racial, conglomerate. if he was going to do a baby-theme (which, coincidentally, might even be his hint to the fans that Mani is pregnant, or TRYING, which would be good for him, considering the unfortunate occurrence w/ Mayte's baby) a la Michael jackson @ the beginning of the "Black or White" video, he should have put a Black baby, Caucasian, Asian, Latino, and Amerind, to relect his consistent message of multi-culturalism in his music, which I actually admired him for, even though I also thought it was a safe way for him to distance himself from his own African-American heritage, simultaneously. So anyway, in regards to your avatar from ATWIAD, did U think he put that Black baby w/ the flag waving as a sign of true conservative patriotism(which Alex Hahn claims in Possessed), or did you think that he was alluding to the broken promise of America to its African-American citizens, which he also alludes to w/ the old man w/ the cane, from "America", featured on the cover as well, as exemplefied by the nakedness of the baby, and sort-of bloated stomach, like he's malnourished? Generally I'll buy any old shit really, I'm a sucker for cool merchandise and tat.
But this just looks like overpriced junk. Instead of shit like incense and a poster of a kid I don't know etc, I'd prefer a CD of new music. You listening, O Purple One? Music I say!

And it all comes in a shoebox that's spray painted purple. If you order through my presale you can have this great, awesome , unique item for only $200. $275 for non orgers. Shipping is $60.

I totally agree with Boris.
But I've 2 say...I've been a big fan since 1992...bought all his realeased music (as far as I could get)...I'd b happy 2 find on the npg store things like the Hit N Run tour singles or the musicology singles...but I only can find a bunch of shit...and now he's releasing the shit master. I know he's not forcing anyone 2 buy it...but it's sad seeing him taking advantage of his fanbase's loyalty...it's sad 4 me 2 say it...but I'm really disappointed! I bought 2 times the npgmc trax...in the first 2 years and then I had 2 pay again this year 2 get better quaility copies...I mean why he didn't realese excelent quality files in the first time?? but anyway, if he released the Slaughterhouse/CI cd's I'd buy them 2, becuz I like his music and I know even 320kps mp3 or wma doesn't have the same quality as an audio-cd track...but is it fair?? Did I have a big fit and throw my toys out of the pram, did I say this is soooo unfair?, no I just put them back and looked for something else. Ok, after reading most of the thread, I'm quite impressed with the NPGMC marketing savvy. I guess they think like this:
1. We've got a load of stuff laying around. 2. Most of the fans wouldn't be bothered paying market price for all this junk. 3. The few (suckas?) who would be willing to fork out moola for this, would probably be willing to pay more than its worth anway. 4. Let's mark up the price to the limit those few would actually pay, which is the only way to make enough for it to be worth our while to market this stuff in the first place. And now for the flaw in their reasoning (what they forgot): * At the same time we'll piss off all those other fans (the vast majority) who would love to spend their money on something decent - i.e. music. N.B. All those ppl blaming Prince - I doubt he has very much to do with this, other than a casual okay. "We've never been able to pull off a funk number"

_____ No, people wouldn't find fault with an average-priced CD release (they may critique the music, but would happily stump up the money). Also, if the book had simply been sold by itself, this thread wouldn't exsist. Adding a CD single in with a bunch of crap, is taking advantage of hard-core fans. If you could buy the CD single seperately, again this thread wouldn't exsist. People are just noting that, once again, the really lousy offical club is milking it. This message board is better than the one you pay $25 to get access to. I visit the npgmc about once a month. They sell a load of crap for idiots in my opinion, and they overcharge on shipping. That person was right though...a DEVOUR in Hawaii jacket would have made it all worthwhile. Also, how about a Larry Graham cologne -- Bass Instincts! Chaka Khan -- Bubblicious!

Yeah, it's real fuckin' freaky to think that putting one (just one!!!!!) already-released-for-download song onto a pressed CD (which is what the majority of the members have been clamoring for...check out their Merchandise Suggestions thread in the U Smell Us forum) and selling it with an old t-shirt, some incense, an inexplicable poster of the Gerber baby and a hat box for $100 + S&H ----- fuckin' FREAKY to think that's taking advantage of a fanatical fanbase. Imagine this: you went into a GAP, and apart from some very common clothes that you could buy anywhere, most of what's in store isn't stuff to wear but cheap plastic toys, scented candles, etc. -- all of it also not exactly aimed at you but seemingly aimed at some puerile guy/girl that wouldn't dream of entering GAP. However, there is one pair of pants that you like -- but you can't buy it unless you buy a whole lot of other crap and moreover, you can't even get it there and then no they need to ship it to your home and they will charge you big time for it (while not using a reliable company). It's called the npg MUSIC club. MUSIC. Prince's fans are GROWN-UPS. I've been saying for 10+ years that Prince's official fan club stuff looks like the kind of fan club you expect from N Sync or the likes. © Bart Van Hemelen

That's right...and one more thing..instead of selling this high-priced crap he should be releasing more music, that's a way 2 really honor his fanbase. Your analogy here doesn't hold up at all. I don't think anyone on here thinks The Hatbox Invasion is comparable to "a pair of jeans that were nice but cost too much." More like a pair of jeans that you wouldn't be caught dead in, AND cost an outrageously high price. It might just make me stop wanting to buy anything from that store in the future to see something like that. Your analogy would be appropriate if they were releasing some of the oft-requested vault tracks, but they were charging $100 per pressed CD. Otherwise, we're talking about a quite different scenario. And I've seen some people say that they feel disappointed or insulted by this kiddie crap, and I agree with that. Could someone who has posting privileges at the high and mighty club please ask one of the moderators who the NPG baby is and why they made a poster out of it? How random can you possibly get? onenitealone said: Okay - I've been reading this thread and, for what it's worth, I'd like to add my two cents.
I totally agree that no-one's forcing anyone to buy this product. If you want it (or can afford to buy it without forever questioning its' value) - fine, go ahead. Most of us who are 'into' Prince are collectors of some sort, anyway - whether it be the music (and that alone), magazine articles, tour paraphernalia, whatever. There's always something the die-hards are going to snatch up, simply because of its' Prince connection. (How many of us have bought albums by Prince's proteges or even a whole cd by a totally different artist, just to get our hands on ONE track that P 'features' on? And how many of these albums, magazines, etc, do we read/listen to on a 24/7 basis?? Yeah, it might be great knowing you've got the Carmen Electra album but does ANYONE actually listen to it non-stop???! And - yummy - that Get Wild perfume still smells fantastic). So, in other words, what is tat to one person might be someone else's treasure. I also think it's great that Prince is at least giving us something. It wasn't too long ago that people were complaining the site was a bit of a white elephant. Their main argument was that - apart from the message boards - there wasn't that much to buy or do. (Especially since it's called the 'NPG Music Club'). That said, it may not be to everyone's taste but, I guarantee, there'll be fans lapping up this Gift Box in their droves, for exactly the same reasons I just outlined above. They may not even WANT it - but it'll fit quite nicely with the rest of their Prince collection. Just as nicely as the Ltd. Edition gold 'Symbol' album or the 'Purple Rain' purple vinyl or the 'Days Of Wild' single, etc... So, if only for that reason alone, I think it's good Prince has made this available. At least he's trying. Ultimately, however, I won't be buying this set. Don't get me wrong, I'd LOVE a copy (and I bet most fans would too, if they didn't have to cough up $100). Part of the fun of being 'into' an artist is actually having rare or collectable material. But I do question this box-set's merits - do I really want to put a poster of some kid on my bedroom wall? (How dodgy will THAT look??). And do I really need a purple hat box? (Unless I become a drag queen in the near future, that is). I just don't think it's worth that sort of money. And it's as simple as that. If people want to buy it - great. But on this one occassion, sadly I'll have to say 'No'. I ain't gettin' pimped! You said a mouth full. You made a wonderful point. If you want it buy it. I feel the same I don't see myself buying it for 135. I would like to have everthing besides the poster but not for 100 bucks. I love Prince and i always pay to see him every time he comes the chicago.

Somebody on the boards over there "hinted" that the baby actually has some significance and is "related," to someone, but the thread got locked- something about being disrespectful to children. One of the PP's went on to say that there are many pictures of children throughout the materials. I'm starting to feel like the lone childless Prince fan. Anyway, my opinion on the Hawaii set. If you don't want it, don't buy it. It's not that hectic. S Filthy cute and baby U know it

Weird that Prince hasn't even adopted a child considering the fact that he's selling pictures of babies instead of music, isn't it? Maybe he has, and he just doesn't want them to have to deal with the media craziness, which would be totally cool. I just think in that case it would be weird to include a baby poster and apparently babies all over the place, who knows, whatever.
