"The Time"(whom is the original members Jimmy,Terry,Jesse,Jellybean & Monte) IS NOT the band that Morris has been touring with anyway. So why use that name in the first place?

I guess The Temptations & Fleetwood Mac didn't get that memo. lol Because each group have had over 20 different members since they started in the 1960s. Before some of the former members passed, at one time there were at least 5 different Temptations groups touring. The one with Otis Williams was the official Temptations, which are still performing now. There's a lot of classic rock & oldies groups still performing that have 1 or 2 original members or none at all, like The Platters. I think Mötley Crüe has a contract that states only the original 4 members can tour under that name today. So I guess fans of John Corabi & Samantha Maloney won't get to see that lineup. razz

in some cases you have two versions of bands touring, I think Queensrcyhe and Great White do this also LA Guns, and a few others. There are bands that almost have no members but for some they have guys plugged in that sound like the lead singer so they can pull it off, plus for many classic rock the summer is when they tend to go heavy on touring and if they jump on a ticket with another band this is a big draw and most are their for HITS so it doesnt matter much if its almost like going to see a karoake band at this point. FOREIGNER one of the biggest (still not in the RNRHOF) acts in classic rock, have only one guy Mick Jones and its really his band, but now because of age and health he almost is never there. CHICAGO has only three guys left, and since two are in the "brass section" of the band people dont even seem to care who is new or old at this point with them, or to some when Terry kath died that band was over, they didnt like what Peter Cetera did making them a total ballad band with David Foster. I laugh sometimes though because people dont even realize that some that they MISS in a band were not even original guys, Steve Perry is a prime example he was not the original guy, he was the guy that was there when they became a radio friendly band and not a jazz rock fusion band, but he is not an original. Also another would be STYX some fans want this reunion of Deyoung with James Young and Tommy SHaw and this is funny because ONE its never going to happen Dennis has been out of the band 22 years now and there is bad blood still, but Tommy Shaw and James Young were not originals either. James came in when the name was changed to STYX but wasnt an original and TOmmy was not there till 1975 STYX was already six ablums in and a top 10 hit too. SO I get why people use the name still, I mean seriously if Morris Day toured as that and just did Morris songs, NO TIME songs at all, what would the reception be? so he has to some way use this name. Now with bands touring without a lead singer or something its case by case, i remember a few years ago there was this rumor steven tyler was booted from Aerosmith LOL really? whos going to an aerosmith show with a new singer? BUT in some cases it works, CHICAGO lost peter cetera who was there big time hit guy and then they plugged in Jason Scheff and had quite a few hits with him and he filled his spot quite well for almost 30 years. Journey though hasnt had radio hits, they have been huge still and honestly if there was a real rock radio that played new stuff and ageism didnt exist I can choose five at least recent Journey songs that could have been radio hits.

Journey wasn't huge because they got rock radio airplay, it was because they got Top 40 pop airplay. What's popular on Top 40 radio has always mostly been determined by female listeners. If you look at something like prog rock, the audience was majority white males, prog didn't get much pop radio airplay. Neither did heavy metal, besides glam metal (aka hair bands). Album Oriented Rock mostly played male acts, few women and even less non-white other than Jimi Hendrix. There's little if any rock on Top 40 today. Hip hop took its spot. Contemporary country has the guitars.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Well Journey is considered classic rock now, just like other bands and artists like them and classic rock stations play the same songs they have always played, "stairway to heaven" and things like that, no new albums will ever get played by older artists especially rock or even pop icons like a Duran Duran who constantly get best of the year album nods in every magazine but never get played because radio is a waste and has been for decades at this point, pretty much since the early 90's that was when radio was dead. Ironically as I have said before "physical sales" now are constantly dominated by older and most of the time rock artists with the occasional BTS release and Taylor Swift and country artist. The reason TOP 40 doesnt play rock has nothing to do with the genre being dead, it has to do with the mind numbing simplicity of what is played, watch Rick Beato breaking down a recent Top 10 a few months ago and how about seven or eight songs of 10 had the same trap beats, thats because you want to give the listener what is easy like everything else and not a challenge, basically boring shit. I havent heard a ROCK artist on Top 40 and NO coldplay and Maroon 5 are NOT rock, never have been.

Rock is dead in the mainstream, just like jazz is. Rock is going to be a niche genre like jazz. Jazz still has an audience, but has little mainstream media & audience attention. At one time jazz was mainstream pop music, up until rock began to kill it in the 1950s. Rock n roll & doo wop hurt the popularity of the crooner era singers getting airplay like Bing Crosby & Perry Como. Although Pat Boone is kind of an offspring of the crooner vocal style. Jazz started to lose mainatream popularity when big band swing was replaced by bop. People danced to swing, bop was more for listening to. It's the same way soul music killed the popularity of blues singers on R&B radio in the 1960s. Hip hop has infiltrated music and overall culture in a way that rock didn't. Rappers like Ice Cube, Will Smith, LL Cool J, Ice T, & Queen Latifah became accepted as actors/movie stars in a way that rock & pop stars like Mick Jagger, Michael Jackson, & Madonna couldn't. Even Elvis Presley was only popular in a certain type of movie, people didn't go to his movies for the plots. razz Snoop Dogg has a cooking show with Martha Stewart. Dr Dre's Beats headphones made him a near billionaire. Gene Simmons couldn't do that. razz

mainstream and what sells physically are not hand in hand anymore, live concerts are definitely not hand in hand with mainstream and haven't been since the 90's. People sleep on the live concert mainly because of what covid did the last two years but live shows are back now that people realize covid is something that is going to be around like the flu and we have to live with it. Shows are the bread and butter for musicians plain and simple, why do you think all these so called mainstreamers have clothing lines book deals magazines and tv shows? Because they make nothing on the music pretty much unless you're Taylor Swift or on that level. As puffy said in the 90s when music sold, he said "he had all these other endorsements because the music would leave him broke" and this is the guy who was producing tons of stuff, so the writing is on the wall for the future of the artist, basically you better have a plan b c d e and f if you want to make money, or you better get your ass playing some shows and build that way.

They will NEVER be "The Time" only with Jimmy, Terry, Jesse, Jellybean & Monte & of course Morris.

They must be like John Cena in this picture. lol

Monte, Jerome, and Jellybean have been touring as Morris Day and The Time
since the late 90's. It's only been since the last several years that Jerome stopped touring with them. There are 3 original members still so why wouldn't
they be The Time.

"Monte, Jerome, and Jellybean have been touring as Morris Day and The Time since the late 90's."

I'm aware of that since I've seen them SEVERAL times live. One where Jerome(whom is a pleasure in person) tried to pull me on stage.

But the ONLY original band member there NOW is Jellybean(whom meeting was "interesting" to say the least). THAT IS NOT THE TIME to me. Although Morris new band is amazing live.

I declined multiple media outlets who wanted to interview me regarding this matter, because I was told this would be expeditiously worked out between myself and current ESTATE holders.. However last night, I received an email from the estate that honestly let me know, that I was all ONE BIG LIE. I have been listening to both sides on this and not getting into the whole hype of Morris and his initial statement because it's simple to think crap about the estate. However hat I got from all this was that Morris had an agreement with Prince that he could use Morris Day and the Time no problem there he could NOT just go out as the Time especially with different members, that was never allowed. But the issue is that Morris tried to trademark Morris Day and The Time and that's when the estate stepped in because they had to approve and it's something not even Prince was allowing. It's not like Prince said it's cool do what you what and then he died and the estate changed it, not true, he never said it was ok to trademark the name, Morris day and the time, if that was the case prince would have allowed it when he was alive, he never did. So Morris saying they won't let him use his name is not true he can tour it's that and has been, he just can't own it.

The estate still hasn't bothered letting boutique labels reissue assosicated acts like The Time. Why are they sitting on this stuff?

I remember Prince allegedly blocked a Rhino label Time best of around the same time as the excellent Jesse Johnson one, but where are these best ofs and reissues that arn't pointless vinyl reproductions now Prince is dead?

Not exactly on topic but the handlers are pretty shit atm

No best of for a group as good as The Time is pretty disgraceful. Yes, greatest hit comps don't sell anymore, but give them to small labels who will take the chance.

Prince trademarked The Time before they even were really famous?!

How honest is that?

How do you feel about that?

That trademark AND the fact the most of the Time's music IS nothing but Prince with Morris' vocals?Prince curated that band, publicized it, gave them music, a name, and fame. Morris threw it away with his drug usage....and hasn't moved forward.

How do I feel that that?
That Morris is taking shortcuts by attempting to thieve the trademark. He STILL has to pay royalties to the Prince estate for almost every song he performs (songwriters get the performance royalties).

I have no respect for Morris' continuing a sympathy ploy. If he wants to RENEGOTIATE the contract with the Estate, he is free to attempt that. Otherwise, he's a cheesy has-been who never moved forward.

Doubtful that contract is still in effect. Prince either trademarked the name or they consider him having ownership and basically his side project with Morris and sometimes Jesse.

Morris' problem is that he/band have created very little of what they perform.
Royalties have to be paid on usage of the band name.
Royalties have to be paid on EVERY song they play that Prince wrote.
That's what....95% of their act?

The Time is a bunch of talented guys. Aren't they tired of Morris' "mirror" stupid shitshow stuff?

It's nice to see that at least a few posting here are living in the reality of the situation. MD is completely responsible for the mess he is in, no one else.

And ffs, the estate is doing what they are supposed to do to protect Prince's intellectual property and preserve his legacy. Try acting like you are an actual fan posting on Prince.org instead of a hater. If you don't like him, you don't belong here. Once probate is over and the heirs/owners take over they can do as they like...and I'm gonna bet people are gonna bitch all over the place. I also will be very surprised if any of those who will take over are gonna give away anything for free because that is not how you do business if you are looking to succeed wink

Newsflash: everyone on this board is a fan of Prince.Being a fan of someone doesn’t mean you have to agree with or support everything they do.Disagreeing with the estate doesn’t make anyone a “hater”.I just think they should leave Morris alone and focus on bigger, better ways to generate money. It’s not as if Morris and the guys are making millions every night.

The estate holds the contract.
Y'all can play around with emotions and listen to Morris' half-truths....but until you understand THERE'S A CONTRACT, you can blame everyone but it doesn't matter.

Morris and the band would make money if they created and played their own music.
But no. They're paying royalties for use of the name (under that contract) AND for every Prince-written song they perform, which is most.

But....I think Morris knows he is a mere "heritage act" which is why he remains stuck in the past at his sad, old age.

This thread is SO mean and disrespectful toward Morris(whom was VERY cool to me when we met) & his legacy. He is really the ONLY act besides Sheila E. that Prince(r.i.p.)created, produced, composed, written, arranged and played virtually ALL the nstruments on that is STILL going strong OVER 40 YEARS LATER. Princez(r.i.p.) made up and broke bread with him RIGHT before he transitioned into the afterworld. So Prince(r.i.p.) gave him his blessing & what I heard a VERY NICE CHECK!

They have had years to sort something out. We know things are coming, but they can surely get some of his related material out?

Still no Vanity 6 deluxe on CD. Still no Time 2 disc best of with "Corperate world". An audience is out there to buy it....whats the hold up? A pathetic vinyl reissue is frankly disgraceful for The Time. Vanity 6 anyone?

99% of cellphone video filming is awful and no one is sitting on YouTube watching whole two hour show shot by someone with shaky hands on their phone video, if they are then honestly they need to figure out what a real concert live show is and isn't, and to be honest if your fan base would rather watch that you need a new fan base. Live streaming pro shot shows may become a new thing for bigger artists who don't want to tour anymore because of covid etc...but there is a difference between artists that can do that and then the ones that play clubs and bars, not everyone is Taylor and Beyoncé.

no one is sitting on YouTube watching whole two hour show shot by someone with shaky hands on their phone video

Are you sure about that? Because folks have been buying bootleg movies on DVD that people filmed on camcorders or phones at movie theaters since the early 2000s. They still sell them now in my neighborhood and at one of the local flea market. razz

Bootleg videos are long gone in major cities DVD is actually more dead than the physical music on cd or album, DVD is a dead market at this point. You tube phone videos are awful, if I want to see the show I am going, if its an artist that doesnt tour or for covid reasons its streaming I want pro shit I dont want to hear a bunch of drunks with a shaky camera, I cant even watch a two minutes of that.

Plus alot of bands just video the stuff and put real quality stuff on their channels especially rock artists because they know people still come to see them also, Foo Fighters always do this, Pretty Reckless do it, and tons of other artists release real stuff not joes camera shit

That's not exactly true. There's a lady down the street from me that sells bootleg movies. They're not from someone filming at a theater though, she pirates new release movies from online and burns them to DVD. People with families buy them because they don't want to pay for expensive movie tickets and $8 popcorn and a $5 candy bar. There's a website that sells DVD/Blu-ray of movies that have never been released on home video like Song Of The South & the Star Wars Christmas Special. They're not on any streaming services either and unlikely to ever be. The Disney CEO said they're not going to put Song Of The South on Disney+. Marvel movies still sell well on DVD. You think people are not buying that new Spider-Man movie. It made close to 2 billion dollars at the box office.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

most people now when a film is released on dvd etc...buy the digital copy from Amazon and store it that way for the most part unless it's something collectible, new buyers are not buying physical for the same reason they don't buy music, and like I said dvd sales have dwindled more than music sales because music has other options like vinyl besides cd though both have seen rises in sales and that's not even counting used sales which are huge, dvd sales have evaporated very quickly and again the market is still there for used, and if you do something collectible there is always a small niche market for it.

If that is the case, why do I see Redbox everywhere in front of stores? razz You can't buy the movies from the machines, but it's like the modern version of Blockbuster. People also check out movies from the public library for free. I know that because I checked out a couple last week. lol Also, not everybody has internet and the ones that do, their service might not be fast enough to watch movies without a lot of freezing. Streaming servies can remove movies at any time or they can edit/censor whatever they broadcast. Just like when they show theatrical movies on regular network TV, when they bleep out the profanity.

People do buy physical video games. Games are currently the largest seller of discs. A popular game sells millions of copies unlike most music CDs.

Gaming has always been huge, people still buy the games mainly because the downloading of games is troublesome and people just want the game before anyone else, downloading a game you have to also download manuals, not sure who thought that people would want do all this printing out and downloading long term, which is mainly the reason that Digital music sales are non existent and falling quick and physical comes back and streaming leading still because its the era of convienance, what people dont realize is they very easily could lose their library, its hard to lose your physical copies unless god forbid a home is destroyed. Depends where you are located, here in NYC used shops are big but new product especially dvds dont sell for the most part, Best Buys have almost gotten rid of the section, so its Amazon if you want it for the most part, and even they have limited their copies. Its rare now for any music artist to sell a million of a cd (physical) I mean if you are not Taylor Swift its not going to happen, there were only 16 certified releases last year and Taylor outsold most of the albums with a re-done album.
