He didn't try to 'steal' it. No one currently holds a trademark for 'The Time' for live work and Morris didn't apply for 'The Time', he applied for 'Morris Day and the time' and that is different to the 1982 agreement.

His application was cancelled on Feb 18th of this year because I guess the Paisley Park Estate sent lawyers after him to prevent him using it. But Paisley Park do not have a trademark for either of those names.

This sounds about right. It’s crazy that some folks think Morris is trying to “steal” something that he is such a major part of.

If there's a signed agreement dating back to 1982 that stipulates the terms of ownership of the name "The Time", and about 2 weeks after Prince died MD filed for the trademark which includes "The Time" in that name and had to surrender it at the beginning of Feb 2022, what would you call it? Because he can not claim he did not know the terms of the contract for decades. Sneaky and underhanded. Just like some others did and who knows who else.

It's interesting to see folks dance atound that 2 weeks thing.

It must not have taken effect yet, or they're just ignoring it. They have a show near Minneapolis on April 16.

Right? All over FB too. It is what it is, but MD did not tell on himself but took aim at the estate and dividing the fans. That's straight out bullshit. Even worse are the fans who are shit-talking Prince over it when he WAS the driving force behind The Time.

It has nothing to do with us. If fans decide to take sides, that's because they want to or they're bored. I think most of us want to see them all do well, make money, be healthy, share their stories and music both old and unreleases, maybe even some new stuff, but let's not push it.

No,nobody is talking shit about Prince. When he was alive,he had no problem with Morris doing shows billed as “Morris Day and The Time”.Whatever arrangement/agreement that Morris had with Prince,it worked for many, many years.

It’s the estate that is now trying to ruin that.

it's a good thing that some of the other bands (Apollonia 6,Mazarati,etc) aren't out there playing shows. The estate would probably come after them too.

It's not that.

It all was Prince's idea in the first place to begin with.

They all had the chance of making something out of their own, after they left the Prince camp.

Apollonia didn't do much, Vanity tried, Morris did, and Mazarati faded into oblivion, tbh.

All without the 'help' of Prince, though having him created a serious start (through his name and fame) to begin with. If not we probably never would've heard from them.

Prince had Sheila named Sheila E. instead of Escovido. But I think that is allowed to do so for her.

Same for Bobby Z, Dr. Fink, Brownmark...

"Vanity tried".

What do U mean Vanity tried ?! Did U really just say that?

Vanity(r.i.p.)(whom I communicated with) turned herself into a BONAFIED, MEGA movie star & sex symbol after she left Prince(r.i.p.). disbelief

But the Estate didn't go after him for just using the name to perform under. He filed papers to take the name and everything tied to it that none of us know a thing about.. The Estate isn't in the giving away stuff business. He's not exempt from going through proper channels to go on doing what he's been doing.

It was just fine until he tried to take the trademark he had no right to. Say what you want, but the facts are the facts. The estate is SUPPOSED to protect Prince's intellectual property so they are doing what they court expects them to do. Just like I said to the other poster, you need to get out there and do some checking around. Plenty were bringing Prince into it.

It's nice to see that at least a few posting here are living in the reality of the situation. MD is completely responsible for the mess he is in, no one else.

And ffs, the estate is doing what they are supposed to do to protect Prince's intellectual property and preserve his legacy. Try acting like you are an actual fan posting on Prince.org instead of a hater. If you don't like him, you don't belong here. Once probate is over and the heirs/owners take over they can do as they like...and I'm gonna bet people are gonna bitch all over the place. I also will be very surprised if any of those who will take over are gonna give away anything for free because that is not how you do business if you are looking to succeed wink

Newsflash: everyone on this board is a fan of Prince.Being a fan of someone doesn’t mean you have to agree with or support everything they do.Disagreeing with the estate doesn’t make anyone a “hater”.I just think they should leave Morris alone and focus on bigger, better ways to generate money. It’s not as if Morris and the guys are making millions every night.

Because if he were alive it wouldn't be an issue, because he wouldn't allow this to happen, just like the Estate is doing now.

Do you really think Prince would be ok with MD filing a trademark for The Time? C'mon, you know better.

Morris has been playing shows billed as “Morris Day and The Time” since the 90s.Prince even invited them to a few Paisley Park events. There was NEVER any issue about Morris using the name.Whatever arrangement they had,it worked for many years and everyone was happy.

Not a newsflash: the org is well known around the internet as being a haters haven when it comes to Prince. It looks like you've been around long enough to know that. Why wouldn't a fan think Prince's intellectual property should be protected? Do you even understand all the reasoning behind why Prince owned the name? Prince himself protected his property. And this isn't just some flash in the pan, this is important stuff so yes....if people disagree with the estate protecting his property, his legacy, then I'm gonna call someone a hater.

Morris probaby wouldn't have had a problem with continuing on, but he had to be greedy and try to trademark the time.

And I seriously hope that they go for the others also.

From the court documents, Apples may be in trouble also.

This whole thing is stupid. "The Time" is a different name and trademark then "Morris Day and the Time" and there is historical precedent that Prince agreed with that and didn't have a problem with "Morris Day and the Time".

WTF?

This, like many other things that went on while Prince was still here to call the shots, has changed. Someone must protect his intellectual property and the estate is currently doing it as determined by the court. Comerica is doing the job they were hired to do, it's their fiduciary duty and legal obligation.

From a legal trademark perspective, "Morris Day and the Time" is not the same as "The Time"

.

.

It's over-reach.
