I don't know that it is easily understood. Prince was a romantic hardhead that is for sure. Nothing Compares 2 U. I think he meant it when he wrote and his entire life. That is why he didn't like it being associated with Sinead O'Conner.

OK here are the lyrics to the entire song. What does it all mean? Who is the 'somebody like U'? Who keeps breaking Prince down? What is it all about? Give us your insight.

The BREAKDOWN

Listen to me closely as the story unfolds
This could be the saddest story even been told
I used to want the house with the biggest pool
I've been missing out I just feel like a fool

Keep breaking me down, down, down
Keep breaking me down, down, down
Keep breaking me down, down, down
Keep breaking me down, down, down

I used to throw the party at the New Year's Eve
First one intoxicated, last one to leave
Waking up in places that you would never believe
Give me back the time, you can keep the memories

Keep breaking me down, down, down
Keep breaking me down, down, down
Keep breaking me down, down, down
Keep breaking me down, down, down

Every book I've read said that I would meet somebody like you
Whenever I was sorry, so sorry for the things I used to do
A journal full of numbers that I used to go through
(1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7) all behind me now, all because of you

Keep breaking me down, down, down
Keep breaking me down, down, down
Keep breaking me down, down, down
Keep breaking me down, down, down

You keep breaking me, you keep breaking me down
I don't wanna walk out
Don't wanna go down, down, down

See there's a door that you can walk through
Where there used to be a wall
I don't care, it's cool as long as you catch me baby
(Catch me when I fall) If there's ever a fall
Closer to the breakdown, the closer we get

log off and stay there

"Kamasutra" LP which was music he composed for his wedding to Mayte, were those about Vanity, too.. SMH

The guideline I proposed is that songs are about Vanity unless it can be ruled out. That does not mean all songs are about Vanity.

(When I say Vanity it can consist of any aspect of the Vantiy/Prince relationship)

So why did you choose these particular songs? Are you serious or just trying to show me wrong by this select group? I am going to assume you are serious and want a legitimate answer, but I don't know for sure that that is the case.

Baltimore - If you read the lyrics, you can obviously rule out that it si not about Vanity.

The rest of the Hit & Run Phase Two Album is about Vanity.

Vanity is the Black Muse - extraordinaire

Big City - 'everyone's a star, to me your the most pretty'

'I'm in the big city when I'm in your arms' 'where ever we are it's the big city'

"that's it"

Shut This Down - on Hit & Run Phase Two - I've already said this is an album with Judith Hill as the main muse. But Vanity does make...

Is Prince's version of Anotherlove about Andy Allo?

Yes.

Arguments above that it doesn't make sense because he continued to work with Andy ... make no sense. He worked with her for 2011 and 2012. He recorded Anotherlove not too long after she left the camp. Any Prince album with Andy on it came out after she was gone from his life.

He added the lyrics about flaunted, hired, fired, and sharing clothes and hair. These all match with what the working relationship with Andy was likely about.

Btw, Alice Smith's original version is fantastic.

We're just going to have to accept that this person thinks most of Prince's songs are about Vanity. I don't think that but we're not gonna change their mind.

That's why I want to read more explanations, you have to be impressed when someone has a theory and sticks to it. Fair play says I.

The mods determine that, not us, and I don't pretend to know how it should get handled...but I disagree that merely sharing opinions derails discussions.

There's a difference, and when one gets into the realm of proselytizing, or pushing truly idiosyncratic, barely sensical viewpoints in every thread, and they can't find middle ground to discuss Prince...well. At some point it becomes hostile to the general discussion if someone interjects their left field creative writing narratives. I don't think we need to argue over the difference between saying Vanity was his true love (totally tolerable, a harmless opinion), vs. building a complex fan fiction premise you want people to join you on. In every topic. I'm seeiing this a lot with the speculation over Prince's death too, where people aren't just sharing opinions. This isn't about whether they deserve a voice, it's about how the rest of us should deal with it. Feeding it doesn't help.

Even then, doesn't hurt anyone if it's a couple times, but when they're determiend to spread the gospel tirelessly, it's a bit much.

Just ignore if you don't like it. Or give your opinion on Another Love. Who is Prince speaking of Andy Allo or someone else? Support why you believe what you believe. That is the question. Maybe I'll change my mind if you make a good argument.

I believe more often than not and in this song Prince is refering to Vanity. Just because you don't agree doesn't make it fan fiction. Fan fiction is the eye of the beholder. Time will tell all. Seeing confidence in an opioniont as proseltytizing seems to me idiosyncratic and barely sensical . That being said...

It's art. A song can mean anything you want it to mean regardless of the creator's inspiration or intent. That is the beauty of art.

The original poster of this tread believes this song ANOTHER LOVE is about Andy Allo. The basis for this opinion is the sharing of hair, clothes, etc.

Below is a comparison of the Alice Smith lyrics and how Prince modified the lyrics for his purpose.

Alice Smith's song seems to be about a woman with an apparently verbally abusive partner or one who is always companing and never happy. She's telling him to go.

The Prince version, I believe he is talking to himself. He's done everything he can do get the person he loves and finally he has given and tells himself he needs to find another love.

I will agree with the other poster that Andy Allo and Prince may have shared clothes and 'hair'.

But what about the rest of the things Prince changes in the lyrics?

I was something you flaunted, hired, fired

Did Andy Allo flaunt Prince? Probably yes

Did she hire and fire him? I thought he let her loose not the other way around.

You never had a plan to stay

I've read Andy Allo statements about heartbreak associated with Prince. So I don't think she was the one to leave. I think she wanted to stay and if he asked her back she would have been there in a second just like Mayte according to her book alway hoped they would get back together.

The house that we shared haunted, expired needs 100 days of prayer

Did Prince and Andy Allo share a house that is now expired? I don't think this applies to Andy Allo.

You used think I was fun by now I'm the guilty one, there is also talking behind his back, so and so

Does Andy Allo think Prince is no longer fun and is guilty? I don't think so. I think she is still in love with Prince on some level.

He says 'tell me that kid'.

The Kid was his character in Purple Rain. Is this a Purple Rain reference. If it is, it preceeds Andy Allo by a long shot.

Faking it

Did Andy Allo 'fake it'? I don't think.

Yet all these things apply to Vanity/Denise Matthews if you understand her and have listened to her interviews and religious talks as I have.

Vanity and Prince shared clothes.

Prince was enamoured with Vanity's hair. She did have beautiful dark straight hair back in the day.

Vanity dumped Prince.

She flaunted him.

Vanity and Prince shared a house that Prince bulldozed in 2003 - I believe that is what he means by expired.

Vanity in an interview and religious talks seems to blame Prince for have the baggage of the name Vanity and forcing her to wear the iconic Vanity underwear outfit. Apparently, she could not lived down this image and blamed, at one point, Prince for it.

Faking it.

This applies to Vanity but I can't explain why at this point but it goes along with not having a plan to stay.

So, one of the items may apply to Andy Allo but all the lyrical modificants apply to Vanity/Denise. So Prince writes a song in 2013/2014, that seems in every way to apply to Vanity.

Another Love – Alice Smith

You said I was what you wanted

Liar

Liar

You never wanted me that way

If you don’t like it round here

Why would you stay here?

Just keep taking all I give baby

Everything

If you don’t like it baby

(Find another love)

You don’t have a right to take it

(Find another love)

(You don’t have to stay)

(You don’t have to stay)

I tried to be what you wanted

But I’m tired, tired

I don’t really need you anyway

There’s nothing here to fight for baby

Be on your way

You can’t keep taking what I give baby

All I give

If you don’t like it baby

(Find another love)

You don’t have a right to take it

(Find another love)

If you don’t want me baby

(Find another love)

You don’t have a right to break me

(Find another love)

(You don’t have to stay)

(You don’t have to stay)

Move on, Move on

Find another love

Find another love

Move on, Move on

Find another love

Find another love

If you don’t like it baby

(Find another love)

You don’t have a right to take it

(Find another love)

If you don’t want me baby

(Find another love)

You don’t have a right to break me

(Find another love)

(Find another love)

Another Love - Prince

You said I was what you wanted

Liar

You never wanted me that way

I was just something you flaunted

Hired

Fired

You never had a plan to stay

If you don’t like it round here

Find another love

Anyone can see it so clear

Find another love

If you don’t like this baby

Find another love

You don’t have a right to fake it

Find another love

I tried to be what you wanted

I’m tired, tired

I don’t need you anyway

No

The house we used to share is now haunted

Expired, expired

A couple hundred days we have to pray

If you don’t like it round here

Find another love

Anyone can see it so clear

Find another love

If you don’t like this baby

Find another love

You don’t have a right to fake it

Find another love

Move on, Move on

Move on, Move on

Find another love

Find another love

I got to find another love

Another love

You used to think I was so much fun

Now I’m just the guilty one

Another Love

Everything we used to share

Our cloths

And even our hair

Now all you see is what I did

But how come I can’t?

Tell me that kid

Behind my back

I’m just a so and so

But I’m the greatest living soul

You’ll ever know

Another love

Another love

Prince was continually trying to get her back.

There are some pretty big reason why it never happened.

Yet he was stuck on her. Crazy - yes, maybe or romantic? But that doesn't mean it wasn't real.

I saw a documentary on Lee Marvin. He had a relationship with a woman for a short time when he was 22 and the woman was 15. He went on to marry another woman and have 4 children. Had a very famous relationship with another woman which led to a famous palimony suit. He went back to the woman he had a relationship with when she was 15. They stayed together for the rest of his life. Who would think Lee Marvin would be a romantic and want the woman from his early days. Yet he did. Love is love. You would think. We don't that he didn't support her financially. However, there is more to the story. And Prince was very sensitive about money issues. I think Vanity wanted to do it on her own as much as she could. But there were other people with lots of money involved also. I haven't even got into that, yet.

I'm not saying there there is any logical sense to the story. Love is not logical. Especially, when you hear the entire story. My opinion Prince should have just let her go. Maybe it was true love. Maybe it was pride. Maybe it was both. Prince definitely was banging his head against a wall. You love who you love. I think he tried with other women, the wives but "nothing comapred to Vanity" or what Prince thought in his mind who she was. Denise/Vanity I think was very damaged by her upbringing. Yet she was definitely charismatic in a goofy sort of way. I found myself falling in love with her a bit and she was already dead. It's really hard to explain without getting into the whole story. And this thread is not the place. All I can say is Judith Hill said it in her statement to police. "Prince gets locked-in". Right or Wrong. Logical or Illogical. Sense or Nonsense. I think he was locked-in to Vanity/Denise.

I don't know that it is easily understood. Prince was a romantic hardhead that is for sure. Nothing Compares 2 U. I think he meant it when he wrote and his entire life. That is why he didn't like it being associated with Sinead O'Conner.

If the love of your life needed medical treatment you’d be financing it forever. I’m very sure she meant a lot to him but knowing she was so sick he wouldn’t be writing about her and not helping. Even if she refused you’d be helping. I think when she passed he was devastated of course but it’s not completely sensical. He had many loves - two wives! Vanity may have been the most special perhaps but oils you be writing love songs while love of your life who you want to be with is dying and not helping out? No. It wasn’t his place to not blaming him he was a great man but this is why I don’t quite follow.

You seem to have really researched this - I suppose I always found it odd he name called Denise on circle of amour in 1998, it seemed strange as he was married to mayte and it seemed so out of date. If you’re right it’s a tragedy they couldn’t be together. Did I read you’re writing a book on this topic? If so let us know when you publish it. I like to listen to all sides of any theory. It’s also true Manuela looked like a tamer version of vanity. But he could have just had a type.
