Not unreasonable and first glance, but this is being sent to individual users of a community that has been around for as long as this site, that has lots of rules about what to share and what not to share, and Prince has been aware of its existence since its creation.

This was sent directly to you? Was it sent to your personal email? Or was it sent to you via the fan sites? If so, which one, please use an orgnote, if that makes you feel more comfortable.

I just need to know which bounds Web Sheriff is overstepping before I start making phone calls.

This was not sent to me, but it was sent to several people i converse with daily. Directly to their personal email address. I'm not entirely sure how the addresses were retrieved, but I think it involves people who have been less discrete with personal information.
People were not addressed by their real names, their "screen names" were used.

Oh, I see. Tell them to save their emails and any future correspondence. If they were referred to by their screen names from any of the 3 fan sites that are in PFU, and none of those sites are involved in any file sharing, those emails constitute harassment and intimidation and if I were them, I'd sue the badge off Web Sheriff!

As much as we love Prince, as much as we would like to consider ourselves part of his success, we are not who "made" him. God (by whatever name) made him, gave him his talent, and introduced it to the world, and Prince has worked harder than anyone I've ever seen to perfect his craft. It's his work, his image, his life over which he wants control. Who of us does not want that to the extent we can get it?

I imagine that fine line between love and hate finally dissolved. I went to PFU today with great sadness, which soon turned to anger. Such hate from those who supposedly loved; not just hate for Prince, but racial and homophobic rage. Nothing good can come from this site. No one will win this battle. As of today, I believe we have all lost the acceptance, the love, the freedom, and the incredible togetherness we once shared from Prince's music. I hope all the ego trips are worth it.

thought so - people on this site seem to think that they will be unable to say anything at all about Prince and/or his music but I haven't seen that anywhere or have i missed something here. I thought it all referred to visual images etc. which is not an uncommon request these days vis a vis copyright/intellectual property issues which are becoming ever more important - i have to deal with this and i only work in education.

so has there been an over-reaction by fans?

God bought all those CD's and concert tickets? God signed him to several multi-million record deals?

I just want to be clear. Yes, the guy is talented, and it may be God-given, but I don't think I've ever seen Prince go on record as saying God forked over one red cent to put him in the pop-star stratosphere.

Can the following scenario be completely ruled out at this stage?

Prince, known to be a control freak, hires some company to get copyright violations of his work removed from the web. They just take it too far and overdo everything, screw up, and then send out other letters in order to cover up their sloppy work. Maybe Prince hasn't really taken notice up to this very point where it is about to become a major media story.

Either Ben (the owner of this site) lied, or shit has really hit the fan.

This is what Ben has on the orgs homepage right now:
"demands for removing content and mandating how we would refer to Prince, if obliged, would essentially mean the end of any discussion of Prince-related topics, hosting of images (even of people's symbol tattoos!) and more."

I have no reason to distrust Ben, whereas I'm familiar with Prince's tactics over the years. So no, I don't think people are overreacting.

Hi XXXXX

On behalf of AEG Worldwide and NPG / PRINCE, we would kindly ask you not to file-share illegal / unauthorized
bootleg and pirate recordings of PRINCE (whether through XXX or elsewhere). For your info, XXXX is now being
closed down and we would again kindly ask you not to try and join any att empted replacement ring, network, forum or
site.
As you may be aware, web-traffic relating to PRINCE's intellectual property rights is now being monitored and, where
appropriate, removed … .. and not just by Web Sheriff, but also by music industry associations / attorneys so, if you
insist upon collecting bootleg / pirate recordings - which, obviously, PRINCE would rather that you didn't - then please
retain them for personal use off-line / do not ‘broadcast’ thevmia web-rings, forums, p2p applications or blogs etc.
On behalf of AEG Worldwide and NPG / PRINCE, we do appreciate that - of course - you are valued fans of / are
promoting PRINCE
but, by the same token, you must also appreciate that, by distributing bootleg or pirate recordings (or linking to similar
material), you are potentially causing considerable inconvenience and we are sure that you would not want to be
personally responsible (or liable) for any of the resulting damage and dsiruption.
Whilst writing, we’d add that PRINCE / NPG and AEG Worldwide are not at all against free music but, at the end of
the day, it should be (and is) the artist’s decision as to whether or n ohte effectively allows the unauthorized distribution
of (unauthorized) material on-line - as it’s HIS MUSIC / PERFORMANCE !! Thank you, again, for respecting their
wishes.
As you will appreciate, this e-mail - containing, as it does, a position that is potentially prejudicial to our clients’
enforcement of their rights - is written on a without prejudice basis and, as such, all of our clients’ accumulated,
worldwide rights remain strictly reserved : please excuse this required f ormality.
With Thanks & Regards,
WEB SHERIFF

The web sheriff tells people that he will take them to court if they show the letters to anyone else.
I'm sure we'll see them at some point, especially if the sheriff is going around telling the press pfu is lying, but it would be unwise to do so without consulting lawyers first.

Talking about bootlegs - now that Prince has decided to work against his fans websites rather than with them, how about relaxing the rules on where you can find bootlegs. That would really piss the Web Sheriff off.

Will be interesting to see what The Pirate Bay do with their take down notice. Somehow I can't see them complying, all they will do is take the the piss out of the Web Sheriff.

Let the games begin.....
