Or perhaps Prince does not like the level of obsession with his private life.
In any case, if you buy music or books or paintings or attend performances surely the contract ends there - and surely any artist is entitled to display his work how he wants to and to have some sort of private life. Well, Lady..., I have a suggestion for you (it's worked for me, too) - I would suggest you go about creating original art of your own. It's nice to know that a certain song reflects a certain mood, but for me, that's secondary to being able to say it in my own words. It reminds me of the climax in the movie "Cable Guy" (with Jim Carrey) - when he lands on the satellite and interrupts the signal, right before the verdict in to be read, the next image is of a guy who is watching - he gets bummed, but then starts to pick up a book, and as he reads down the page, a smile comes across his face. Disturbing as I think his actions are, maybe this is Prince's subtle way of telling us "get out into the world and do it ourselves."
LadyLuvSexxy said: I'm sad, hurt, and confused. But then again, I also expected something like this to happen. I love P to death and would never stop being a fan, but....I feel like now I have to watch everything I do, say, post, or create. A lot of his songs describe my moods perfectly. A lot of his songs go well with the low-budget projects I've done on youtube. But now since I have to be wary of losing my accounts and my money; I feel like more of a prisoner being watched by the secret police than I do a happy, expressive fan. This really has become a sad sad day for me personally. I DO have other artists I love and can use for projects, but....it is Prince that comes to mind first. I get the feeling something is really eating at him esteem wise for all the hooplah and lawyers to come up. I've got nothing against him protecting his image, but....wow....this seems like a bit much on the hardcore side. Is he going to sue the gang at Homestarrunner.com for their recent Halloween Cartoon? One of the characters recently dressed up as Prince. I wanted to post the pic here but now I cannot. I fear putting this site in deep trouble for that. I'm almost afraid to wear purple now....

Prince was one of the first major artists to embrace the internet. He realised that it was the future of promotion and distribution of music long before many others did.
With the NPGMC, he was initially a little too ahead of his time, creating something that would work perfectly in 2007, now that the majority of his fans with the internet are on fast connections. In 2001 that wasn't the case, but he seemed to be so eager to explore and exploit this relatively new medium. So long as it was on his terms, it now seems. Internet viral marketing campaigns have been around now for some years. From The Blair Witch Project to the current promotion for the forthcoming 'The Dark Knight' and that 01-18-08 movie, these things trigger off hype on the net that time and time again prove that word of mouth and internet discussion are fast becoming THE way to promote your product amongst the very audience who you are trying to sell your product to. And unfortunately, that may mean that those discussions are going to be out of your control. But if it adds to the promotion, then surely you have to accept it? Selling music to the masses is something that's getting harder and harder to do and so surely it makes sense, if you're a major artist, to take advantage of the people who will almost certainly buy whatever you're selling without a second thought? It seems that, just because the internet isn't moving along the path that Prince wanted it to, he's now having hissy fits and throwing his toys out of his pram. Hard luck Prince! I can understand closing down sites that are offering his music somehow without authorisation and I can kind of see the validity of not wanting his official videos being played through non-approved and non-controlled media. After all, he created them and they contain his music, so he should be the one to have a say in where they appear. But when it comes to pictures taken by the public of him in concert, or even fans using copyrighted pictures purely for the sake of promoting and supporting him in a non-profit making way, where's the harm? And as for the tattoo/car license-plate thing Way to go Prince, attacking the very, very hardcore fans who go that far in their admiration for you. Hmm, it seems like the Prince envisioned fan community of the future will be like a paisley remake of The Prisoner. The Prince controlled internet is The Village and it's run by Number 7. We are Number 3121 and, despite our efforts to try and work out who Number 7 is, we can't because we're not allowed to utter his name or show his image. If we go renegade and try to escape his smothering rule, a huge Crystal Ball will come and bring us back to The Village. Hey, I feel a new thread coming on here. For goodness' sake, Prince. If unauthorised people are making a profit out of any element of your work then of course, nobody would blame you for seeking compensation etc. But when people are daring to use your likeness or any imagery that alludes to you and any of your copyrights simply because they love either you, your music, your ideals (which are, more often than not, quite wonderful), or maybe all three of those; then why are you persecuting them and trying to deprive them of what is one of the biggest elements of fandom? And that goes for fandom of anything. You know, I hate pictures of me. Especially those ones taken when I wasn't prepared. But, I just accept that I exist in the world and people can point their cameras wherever they like if I'm in a reasonably public place. And if they haven't actually intruded on my personal space nor physically touched me, then there's bugger all I can do about my photo existing and so long as nobody uses that photo to make money out of it (who would?), then I'm cool with it existing.

WOW!I just wish it didn't take this act to UNITE all sites there was no unity at THE NPGMC/QUAKE/ORG or any other site.Prince has no idea what good has come of them all friendships were indeed made. Perhaps a peaceful agreement will be made it was just a matter of time that after the main site closed the rest would follow whether or not if it's fair.

Well I tried sending my message but got a thing saying to enter a valid email address. I'm going to post my note here:
I have been a loyal Prince fan for 28 YEARS. I have reached the point where I will no longer support anything Prince. The mass of the fans at these sites have spent OUR hard earned money supporting Prince as an artist. We have purchased his cassettes and albums and later the SAME albums when CDs became available. We have paid for concerts and aftershows. We have supported his private music club. We have traveled to Minneapolis to support his events at Paisley Park. Not to mention all the paraphanalia like posters, t-shirts, Prince related trinkets and even perfumes and colognes. Over the years we purchased ALL OF THESE THINGS. for YEARS AND YEARS and what do we get in return? Grief.
On 7/7/07 many of us paid over $500 for the concert experience and everything that went with it like the t-shirts. Multiply that by the thousands of people that went to all three shows and now Prince needs more money from us because someone posted a PICTURE out of their love for him as an artist? Prince has always been my favorite musician of all time and this won't change that for me. However I no longer look at Prince as a hero. I don't know if the lawyers are talking him into this and planting ideas in his head or if he really is this spiteful, either way he is alienating those of us who have been with him from the start. I will make it my life's mission to give Prince $00.00 for anything he releases or supports. I will no longer go to concerts and the like. I can look back on my experiences and be happy I had them. I don't need to be abused as a fan and will not support him financially. It's sad that Prince has chosen to hand over his pioneering ways in favor of tactics surely designed by the industry he once fought so hard against. Prince squandered his freedom in bitterness and now is in league with the same forces he tried so hard to free himself from. It's just sad when an artist is this greedy that he needs to bleed his fans of even more of their hard earned money that they would have willingly and gladly handed over if he was putting out quality products and focusing his energy on his own website and what he as an artist can offer. Now he gets nothing. At least from me he won't. I support all the fansites in this. 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

Truly inspired. My spelling sucks edit. [Edited 11/5/07 15:51pm] Studies have shown the ass crack of the average Prince fan to be abnormally large. This explains the ease and frequency of their panties bunching up in it. |

I think Prince only tries to sue white people. Every owner is white. If there was a site called blackprincefams, they would never get one notice from a lawyer! don't you think? Michael Dean never gets a notice from a lawyer, and he talks about Prince in a podcast! Why is that? Because he's black! Damn him!
