At first, when he sued the 7 or 8 websites in the 90s, I thought it was a stupid move, simply because most people did not view those fansights as stealing material so much as promoting the prolific genius of Prince. Sure, he had ever right to do it, as the material was all bootleg, etc. , but those fansites were like giant billboard signs that shouted "Hey, look at Prince--he's fuckin' awesome!"
But now, I'm not even sure he has to right to do the things he's asking? I mean, how are we supposed to refer to him? Is Parody protected speech? How far does he need to take it?

Somwhere between that first experience and a couple of years ago, I finally had to give up my state of being completely enamoured by Prince and resigning to the fact that "Sure, he's an asshole, but he's brilliant. I'll seperate the man from the music."

But now, even the music doesn't sound as good. Forgive my terse comparison, but Adolf Hitler was responsible for the Autobahn, which revolutionized the way German economy was setup and increased its productivity by eons. But he was still Adolph Hitler you know? I simply can't enjoy Prince's music the same way.

People are not stupid, nor are they irrational. If Prince wants everyone to praise him and his music, than the best route for him to take is to act praise worthy and release music worth praising.

I guess I was being far too hopeful when I breathed a sigh of releif after Musicology that Prince wouldn't do any career ending move (like he does after every big hit), but I guess I was wrong.

I mean, just a couple of months ago, the org received a memo to take down my LoveChunky picture, depicting a "fat" Prince on the cover of LoveSexy. It's as if Parody is not protected speech anymore to the man.

He has LMS--Little Man's syndrome.

I think Prince only tries to sue white people. Every owner is white. If there was a site called blackprincefams, they would never get one notice from a lawyer! don't you think? Michael Dean never gets a notice from a lawyer, and he talks about Prince in a podcast! Why is that? Because he's black! Damn him!
[Edited 11/5/07 15:53pm]

No. Ben is blacker than Prince is.

Prince is half italian, right? Like in the Purple Rain HD DVD?

I actually think Prince has the "too much money and freedom" syndrome. He's got nothing to do all day, so he invents these problems. "What!? Someone posted a photo on the internet without my permission!? I've got to stop this now!" Everyone does it to a certain degree I guess. Most of us have other things to do though -- like try and pay bills, hold a job, take care of kids. Freedom is not always a beautiful thang because humans are never satisfied.

You're missing a point here.

Prince is demanding money from these sites for using his image and likeness. He is also demanding people not say bad things or give negative reviews.

No, I'm not missing a point, I know what he demanded.. this thread is embarrasing to read.

Man, I hope you've got a lot of money. Now that majority of his cash cows are turning away, Prince is probably gonna charge you remaining few $312,100 for a show. lol

This is so sad. I was just about to get my "symbol" tattoo. I don't know now. In a way I can understand Prince. If you look at the history of popular music, so many artists have been cheated, lied to and totally lost control of their art. Someone else makes the big bucks and beloved artists end up starving artists. Prince wants to make sure he keeps control. Some of us innocent by standers get hit in this legal drive by shooting.

This is surely at the heart of it but WE are not the problem. The industry is the one who used and abused him and like many abuse victims he is now inflicting the same shit on innocent people much like an abused boy will grow up to be an abusive father. THANK GOD for the other artists in my life that will occupy the artistic space that made me love Prince in the first place. I will always look at the Prince of yesteryear, the one who fearlessly forged his own way and led many of us through bitter times and heartache. I can and will always look back with Pride. But I have enough good times in my memory banks to call it a day as far as Prince is concerned.

omfg dammit supa, get outta my head! that's exactly what i was gonna state: the saddest thing about all this is that prince has more or less become the very thing that he rallied against for half of his career.

I thought maybe all this anti Youtube and control stuff was a publicity ploy. Now he has gone right to the center of his fan-base and basically told us all to fuck off. I know you will read this Prince so let me tell you that you are hurting a lot of people. This site is a 2nd home for many and you want to tear it down? Yeah there is a difference of opinion sometimes on this site but people are not programmed robots. You are really going overboard and it might come back to bite you.

Wait a minute. We don't have the right to discuss someone? What makes Prince so special that no one can discuss him? Look at all the news programs that discuss George Bush, Hillary Clinton, Barak Obama, or any of the other presidential candidates. Everything said about them is not always rosy and not always true either but that's life. People are going to talk regardless and no one should have the right to stop them.

What's next. Is Prince going to have everyone's telephones bugged because they might be discussing him over the phone. Is he going to all the stores and public places bugged just in case his name is spoken in there. What about the record store? People are going to have to speak his name in order to ask for his new CD.

What Prince wants is more than just shutting some fans' mouths. Prince wants to be a dictator and even non-Prince fans should get involved in not letting that happen.

Exactly! disbelief Prince is a well known, first class, infamous control freak. But THIS bullshit is an all-time low.

And to make matter far worse, I bet the bootleg industry will use this moment as motivation to support/promote/provoke more file sharing.

Basically, it's now f*** Prince, the RIAA, the international music industry, and a freaking lawsuit. Even if he "wins" court cases here and there, he'll still be fight a losing war because it simply means that a lot of soon to be ex-Prince fans will all file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, and Prince himself will never be able to receive any money.

Prince is the only artist I know who shits all over his fans. He wonders why his albums don't sell shit anymore.I've supported this guy since 1981 and this is how he repays us? He's turned into the ultimate singer horror. If he can't make a buck he won't do it.He's so cheap he can't even give us a booklet inside planet earth or a track listing, instead we have to go 2 3121 and scroll through that piece of shit site.In closing "Prince why don't u just FUCK OFF!!!"It kills me 2 say that but enough is enough
